I like how people are calling him super complicated, when in the SF scene, Ryu is kind of the easiest guy to learn. (Still powerful though) He's probably going to be a great character for those who've stuck with him throughout all his iterations.
I always was so bad at fighting games. I guess I never really practiced all that much but I always was baffled by how people got consistent inputs. I always felt lost when I would play somebody else. I would win sometimes but when I would I never really would understand why. Most of the time it was luck.

I played the genesis/super nintendo Street Fighter 2 a lot as a child, something like 15-20 years later I tried Street Fighter 3 and it was ingrained in my muscle memory

Wavedashing is not a glitch. It's merely carrying your airdodge momentum onto your landing. People that say it's a glitch have clearly never played the game. Its the physics of the game. L Cancelling is not a glitch. Intended to be left in. SHFFLing is not a glitch. It's just short hopping and L Cancelling. Moonwalking is not a glitch. That's like saying Perfect Pivoting is a glitch.
Holly crap, his Perfect Shield is a Parry from SF3, and he can FADC too (Focus Attack Dash Cancel). Being a fellow SF player (mostly a smash player tho), playing Ryu is gonna be ridiculously fun.
tjlnintendo Yes his down Special, Focus Attack in SF4 can be cancelled out, which is called a FADC (Focus Attack Dash Cancel), when performing a Focus Attack, u can cancel the animation by dashing either forward or backwards, mostly used to extend combos, here its performed when u successfully hit the move so that u can perform an attack right after, because if u let the animation go all the way, it will last more time than when you FADC, this u can also do in SF4
tjlnintendo Yup, its his SF3 parry, which in all honesty, in term of how they work, Perfect Shielding in smash is pretty much the same thing as to what a Parry is in SF3, so all they they did was just change the sound effect.
more little things you can do with ryu at close range: if someone attacks and you shield, up b to get some good knockback when you get hit by a counter, INSTANTLY up b to.... counter counter?
Everybody's saying that Smash players are going to have trouble with the Street Fighter button inputs. I think both Smash & SF players are going to have some trouble (assuming one has played little to none of the other franchise.) SF players have 4 less buttons to use, so they have to either tap the button or hold the buttons to use their different types of attacks Smash Players have to learn the SF combos and button inputs if they want a strong attack.
AnotherNerdGuy You act like it's one camp of the other. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of Smash players who play SF, and SF players who play Smash. Ryu's moves aren't hard to learn honestly. In fact they are very basic. I've only ever played SF casually but I know how to pull off Ryu's basic combos.

Ryu looks to be one of the most unique characters in Smash. I know that alot of "casual" players are disapointed in this, but like the other characters, Smash creates movesets for characters that fit the franchise they're in (aside Capt. Falcon and Fox). And Ryu is no different. Giving him a move simplified moveset would kinda disappoint a majority of SF fans. And while I enjoy the simplicity of Smash, I think Ryu being in is kind of a nice change of pace. For the competitive side. Besides, isn't Smash 4 suppose to be a game for both casual and competitive players alike? Anyways, Ryu was a character many fans wanted in Smash, so we'll have to respect their choice whether you like him or not. Same applies to Roy and Lucas.

I'm excited about Ryu coming in to the Smash Bros series... However, I feel like his input commands give him so much more options and I think he kinda feels OP, maybe even unfitting. I hope I'm wrong though. EDIT: Nevermind, he actually looks balanced. In the trailer, none of his combos are being Directionally Influenced, however, he does seem to be a terror if he's up close to you. I don't mind his down special either, it leaves him vulnerable to a grab.

Midobatsu I feel he is gonna be strong, but from what I've seen, the combos aren't being dodged or evaded in someway. I think he can combo very well and do devastating things up close, but he'll have a hard time in the air and recovering.
i hope..someone that strong should have weak recovery or air..like little mac..little mac is strong when he is played right but has weak air and recovery... maybe he should have a captain falcon esk recovery or something between the two

As a scrub at video games in general (but especially ones which require me to have these things called "reflexes" and to play mind games with my opponent) who has nostalgic memories of SSB64 but stopped caring for the series as much after serious Melee players made me self-conscious about how much I suck, I was going to make the exact same comment. It's not a series first if the first installment, three installments ago, did it.
I always loved Smash Bros. for its simplicity and I was really excited that Ryu made it in, because that meant I could actually play as him without memorizing overly complex button inputs. But now that I've seen this video, I'm really disappointed. I mean, competitive players are obviously going to have a field day with him, but I, as a not so serious player, would have preferred Ryu with simplified button commands.

Peterson Byrd Giving players the ability to perform special move variations through manual input would have been awesome. I couldn't careless if other game systems have it. If I could perform a regular falcon punch with (b) and a dashing falcon punch with (qrt b) I'd be ecstatic and it would just add more depth and personality to each character
Nameless How so? It'd effectively just be integrating some of the characters custom moves into there vanilla move-set through means of manual commands. With most tech and actual combos being limited in Smash4 it'd be nice to have something that rewards players for mastering characters.
i found ryu tech the original street fighter inputs for special moves can be b reversed so you can b reverse, say, yoga flame, or the more powerfull shoryouken
I was so lazy to learn how to play smash; it's a shame because I have thrown a lot of money for this game to give it a try. I have maybe play SSB like 40 minutes. BUT NOW, with original inputs of SSF 2 for Ryu, I'm gonna finally play this game. I have played a lot on the SNES version during my childhood. Maybe this was the thing I needed to get me into Smash. I'm happy
If all other characters have the directional input mechanic, that would expand their move sets a great deal. Their Neutral Specials would be executed using the Hadouken command. The Shakunetsu Hadouken command would give their Neutral Specials more power or range or give fire or ice properties. Their Side Specials would be executed using the Tatsumaki command. Their Up Specials would be executed using the Shoryuken command, and a hitbox would be given to Up Specials that otherwise lack a hitbox. Megaman could have this mechanic. Megaman's strong neutral would be Cutman's weapon. His strong Nair would be Quickman's weapon

The theme changing at the near-end of a match is not a series first. The Super Mario Bros. stage from the original Super Smash Brothers on N64 had a theme change when the time runs out.

If I could perform a regular falcon punch with (b) and a dashing falcon punch with (qrt b) I'd be ecstatic and it would just add more depth and personality to each character

Nameless How so? It'd effectively just be integrating some of the characters custom moves into there vanilla move-set through means of manual commands.
With most tech and actual combos being limited in Smash4 it'd be nice to have something that rewards players for mastering characters.

the original street fighter inputs for special moves can be b reversed
so you can b reverse, say, yoga flame, or the more powerfull shoryouken

I was so lazy to learn how to play smash; it's a shame because I have thrown a lot of money for this game to give it a try. I have maybe play SSB like 40 minutes. BUT NOW, with original inputs of SSF 2 for Ryu, I'm gonna finally play this game. I have played a lot on the SNES version during my childhood. Maybe this was the thing I needed to get me into Smash. I'm happy
me: "Hey Nintendo, can we get Ryu in smash?"

i love how much effort they put into making characters feel the way they play in their original games. that's also why controlling sonic sucks lol
If all other characters have the directional input mechanic, that would expand their move sets a great deal. Their Neutral Specials would be executed using the Hadouken command. The Shakunetsu Hadouken command would give their Neutral Specials more power or range or give fire or ice properties. Their Side Specials would be executed using the Tatsumaki command. Their Up Specials would be executed using the Shoryuken command, and a hitbox would be given to Up Specials that otherwise lack a hitbox.
Megaman could have this mechanic. Megaman's strong neutral would be Cutman's weapon. His strong Nair would be Quickman's weapon

The theme changing at the near-end of a match is not a series first. The Super Mario Bros. stage from the original Super Smash Brothers on N64 had a theme change when the time runs out.
