She told him at the end of Casino Royale that Vesper exchanged the money for Jame's life. That she probably knew she wasn't going to get away. He did forgive her, that's why he gets rid of the necklace, he finally let's her go.
Craig's Bond avenged Vesper, but he never let her go. Leaving the necklace behind marks a task done for Bond, but the hole that she left in his heart was too big too fill. This Bond cries only for two women in his life, one was Vesper his first true love, another one was M (in Skyfall) when she died in his arms. M was like a mother-figure to him, tough love and toughest taskmasker, wise and super-competent, but more importantly, she believed in Bond like no others did, and she was the only one who stayed true with him, till the very end.
The thing about this film is, the subtle and calm moments of it are the best and well-acted. And this one scene is awesome. Shows that Bond is Back, and ready for Skyfall.
This is a terrific scene, superbly played by all three players. I love the controlled power of James Bond's extremely simple diction when he says - "I have one [necklace] just like it. He gave it to a good friend of mine - someone very dear to me." Corinne doesn't need more story than that - he just told her how the scam works and the identical necklace Bond shows her is Bond's proof that he knew Vespa, the previous Corinne. His short and clear description of Vespa is proof of the grief and compassion (yes, compassion) he feels for her, because he knows now that she was a victim, not a willing traitor. He is there for his own reasons, but is more than happy to save Corinne from Vespa's fate, and her brief "Thank you" is her acknowledgement of how much a total stranger has just done to save her neck - oh yes, she knows how narrow an escape she's just had, and that Bond is the one who saved her. Bond didn't do it to be thanked, but he knows she's innocent and deserves to be spared, and although Bond is as cold as they come, he is fair and can show mercy when mercy is due. He is glad she will benefit from his intervention, but she isn't why he is there. I was very surprised when Bond didn't kill Yusef - but then again, strictly speaking, Bond didn't kill Mr Green either. I suspect that Yusef will wish Bond had killed him, and soon.
@mpont7 I believe Bond is referring to M's theory on Vesper dying for him in the aftermath of Casino Royale and not simply being a traitorous bitch as Bond believed her to be at Casino Royale's end. Basically he found out she did love him and he is able to have his solace.
It was also so Corrine wouldn't meet the same fate as Vesper did and as soon as she saw that necklace she knew Yusef was playing her for a fool and she didn't look back at him as she left she said thanks to Bond and left Yusef to suffer whatever fate Bond had in mind
People the music in the background is from The Living Daylights soundtrack. The track is called Murder at The Fair (fast forward it to around 1 minute in for the part used in the video)
This movie is WAY better than Spectre and NTTD. We see the same Bond from Casino Royale and a coherent ending from Vesper story. The changed Bond's character after skyfall and it looks more like a cartoon of himselve. Here he was the Real Bond and you can see he enjoyed playing bond.
He learns of Yusef's location from Greene. He then goes there, and confronts him. He learns she's Canadian from Greene as well; the rest of the things Bond said were the things that happened with Vesper, making her realize that she is also being played by Yusef.
@screenerx087 The necklace is less symbolic of Vesper and Bond's relationship than it is of Vesper's relationship with that douche guy, Bond's belief of her being traitorous and his desire for revenge. When viewed in that way, ridding himself of the necklace coincides with him eliminating those ideas and feelings and, again, finding solace.
I didn't like it because it was carnage with little context. It was action and killing and very little else. The Bond character said little and appeared to be relishing in blasting people into eternity. The Bond gal was lacking in development, chemistry, and served no purpose other than eye candy. Casino Royale was a perfect blend of story, characters, and emotion. Quantum of Solace was just the opposite. The villain wasn't interesting nor was the plot (poisoning a water supply?). What makes it tougher is that it truly does have some great action sequences in it-- maybe the best of the series. However, I felt inundated by then and while they looked visually appealing they were a bit confusing and hard to follow. If you like it that's fine and that's your honest opinion that you're entitled to. Those are the reasons why I didn't care for it.
1981lashlarue All fair points, let me ask you this. How would you be after experiencing what Bond did in Casino Royale? Would you not be a cold hearted son of a bitch? Try to console through violence only to find that it's not enough? I get why they took it in this direction. Not only is it a realistic take, but also people seem to forget this is a new inexperienced Bond in this iteration of the character. There were many things that could have been conveyed better. All in all it wasn't so bad. I do find some of the kills in this movie were circumstantial, he could've tried harder to subdue and not kill. It's as I said previously tho, how would you be? The onset of all this was touched upon towards the end of Casino Royale when he was floating in Venice talking to M about it all. Directly after Vesper's death, at that point you knew he'd became austere. This movie continued off of that, yet ended on a high note.
You can have your opinion of course but general consensus (I proudly agree btw) bad story, laughably weak villain, underwhelming Bond girls, forgettable song, Craig even was off his game a bit in this one, even the title is weak. Its hard to evaluate anything in this movie and see it actually work. I mean I guess the hotel the final scenes took place in looked unique and kind of decent. That said, this was the best scene of the whole movie. IMHO, this movie like even Casino Royale never felt like an actual James Bond movie but at least Casino Royale had great acting performances and storylines from start to finish. QOS had none of that and fell flat. Of course, if you don’t mind Bond movies not trying to follow the Bond formula and trying to be Jason Bourne then I can see how it would come off as appealing.
Casino Royale sucked ass..... James Bond movies are about action and killling and very lil else. Not about hours long of pokers game or trash talk. Quantum of Solace is Craig's only real good movie.
Very late comment but I'll try to explain best I can. Vesper had a boyfriend (Yusef) who was supposedly kidnapped by Mr. White's organization. They blackmailed Vesper into working for them, which included assisting Le Chiffre during the poker tournament, or Yusef would be killed. On her mission, Vesper fell in love with Bond for real and so made a deal with Mr. White, promising him the money Bond had won if he would in exchange let Bond live. Knowing Yusef would die if she sided with MI6, Vesper committed suicide, hoping the organization would let Yusef go after her death. Later, MI6 found Yusef's body under suspicious circumstances, leading them to believe the body was fake and that the organazation wanted MI6 to think Yusef was dead. Now it turns out that Yusef was a member of the organazation all along, pretending to love Vesper and faking his kidnapping so he could get Vesper to work for them, a scheme he was about to pull on this Canadian woman again. Yusef is (partly) responsible for Vesper's death as she never would have been involved in any of it if it weren't for him.
Can someone explain to me how Greene got the two bullets in the back of his skull? I thought Bond had just left him in the desert to die and the motor oil was his only form of suicide? I never understood how he got shot.
Probably, "I think you're so blinded by inconsolable rage...that you don't care who you hurt." Bond doesn't realize it...until that moment when he and the man are alone, with Bind holding the gun...and then,,,,
I was so glad to see that they gave Bond his proper pistol back, the beloved Walther PPK. Don't get me wrong, the P99 is a great gun as well, but the PPK is classic Bond and truly a great pistol. Hitler shot himself with a PPK, not a Luger like some will tell you.
Finally, Bond catches up with Yusef the spy of Quantum who seduced Vesper and manipulated her into giving away classified information (otherwise known as the honeypot).
Yes. She knew her fate was sealed and that she was going to die when she made the deal to spare 007, so she empowered Bond by giving her the one piece of information that could help him start to take down White and his people. If she didn't love James, that number would have never shown up for 007 to find, with no trail to follow.
I still wonder what Bond did to this slimy manipulator. Something violent or verbally confrontational happen here? Bond is full of scary rage when he traps this guy.
Thanks for that, if your answer is true (I believe it is). Ever since I saw this film I never understood what Bond was referring to, as at the beginning of Quantum she never said anything specific about Vesper regarding Bond. Dumb writing (or lack of, as the writer's strike affected the scripting of this film apparently), they could have made it clearer what M was referring to, mostly because her line wasn't even from this film but Casino Royale. k thanks its making more sense now. and ya about mathis, mathis' friend who betrayed him was the head of police right? which bond shot at the meeting place in the desert when he dropped on the car and shot him? but when bond asked mathis when he was dying about mathis not being a good cover name, wtf does that even mean? and so vesper did end up loving bond or did she just pretend too and actually love her bf? or was she too ashamed because she knew bond wouldve found out

I've only just realised that at 1:49 the living daylights is playing
I forgot... can someone PLEASE tell me what M was right about what she said about Vesper?
@XDXDXDXDXDXDXD It's true. I reside in Ontario now but I lived in the province of British Columbia when I saw QOS at the cinema and I can tell you that this scene got lots of snickers from the audience. I don't think anyone expected Bond to say the word "Canadian" because Canada seems so incredibly insignificant compared to the rest of the globe.
Is it just me or is the melody from The Living Daylights playing at 1:42?
can someone also please tell me why Bond decided not to shoot the guy?
thanks:)
Just so everyone knows, this Scene works much better with THIS music
Hi Katflap
Yes I agree, what was he on about.
Maybe someone on here could tell us
I keep watching it and can`t work out what he means.
k thanks its making more sense now. and ya about mathis, mathis' friend who betrayed him was the head of police right? which bond shot at the meeting place in the desert when he dropped on the car and shot him? but when bond asked mathis when he was dying about mathis not being a good cover name, wtf does that even mean? and so vesper did end up loving bond or did she just pretend too and actually love her bf? or was she too ashamed because she knew bond wouldve found out
Can someone PLEASE explain this scene to me - what the hell does it all mean …. She played him or she played that Morrocan guy , old boyfriend ? Or what happened … I DONT UNDERSTAND…. Pls explain ?????
He's a quantum agent who seduces woman
I did this to Santa on christmas morn... where's my bike? sit down!
You Broke my Heart Vesper always like Tracy in OHMSS !
@Zee Remorca you do, but its more than just a hint...i just wonder...WHY??
what makes you think this is the first time?
Just 4 days till skyfall, can't wait.
WELL, WHO'S YOU AND WHACHHYU DOIN' N MA HOUSE, JACK?!!
I want that jacket.. !
I was thrown off by The Living Daylights tune. I watched it before reading any comments. I actually thought it foreshadowing to make us think LD comes after this one.
It's the Living Daylights indeed!
Why pick on Canadian Intelligence?
This isn't the same music as in the movie.
Stana Katic. she also did the voice of "Talia al Ghul" in the videogame "Batman: Arkham City", believe it or not.
Best Bond ever 👍
all these movies went to shit the moment they decided to kill Eva Green
Totally agree. She was a classy lady. Her and bond totally belonged together.
Slevin her death is the driving force of why Bond cannot love women, only sleep with them.
@SawdustProductions Doesn't the CSIS also guard the integrity of the space-time continuum?
