Thank you for this video had no idea the kiln could explode so now am nervous. I’ll learn from your channel recommended cure time before popping into kiln. Totally understand different variables change the cure time for instance temperature if working outdoors as we do, amount of water and air bubbles really🧐so much to learn. We made pumpkins on Friday we laughed and used the wheels but I totally had the wheel going clockwise and did feel different. Very exciting day today we have to clean out the chicken coop to get ready for the winter, stack some of the cords of wood then end the day playing with the clay. We already had a cement board for our outdoor pizza oven so we will clean off that area and use for wedging. So much to do so little time! Take care ✌🏾
Hi Tanya. Don't be nervous. Your Kiln will be ok. Your pottery won't be. If the pottery would explode it would most likely happen during the bisque fire because that is when water would be present. If you don't let the clay dry to Bone dry pressure builds up in the clay. Here is a link to a video that will be helpful. ua-cam.com/video/jtdtBExNpqY/v-deo.html Thanks for sharing. Glad you are enjoying your pottery journey 😊
You are so welcome MaryJean!💖 When I first started out I wanted to know the same things. They showed me on the wheel and peddle, and said start spinning. 😆Thanks for your support 😃
We make flowerpots for a living .Most years I throw around 35 tons of clay a year .. I opened my shop in 1971 and bought my first Shimpo cone drive in 73 (My son Ben still has that one at his shop ) ..I am still using the big industrial shimpo with the 14 inch head and a clutch on a direct drive for the red pots (THat wheel is fine doing the 80 pounders still ) .I got that one in 79 ..WE have 2 RK whispers .One for my white clay station is from the early 2000's and one for my wife's station . I have never had much to do with any of them but oil the stick and keep them clean ... All the best , Yours in clay , Guy
WOW, that is Awesome 😊 Thanks so much for sharing. My friend has an RK whisper that is really old and still works great. She bought it used. We were looking for a date on it but couldn't find one. That's her baby and she hopes it never breaks down. She lets me borrow anything I want in her studio except that wheel. 😍 Stay dirty my friend 😊
@@PotteryCrafters Thanks ,you too ... Though in the trade it is very important to sponge all the clay off your skin and then water hands and arms and while wet add either vegitable oil or hand cream and wick off any silica particulates left in your pours with a paper towel . If you do it every time you will never have cracked skin again .. :)
Hi Marie, Great informative videos. Question: Is there a way to prevent the mold or discoloration on the bottom of my mugs and bowls? No one ever mentions the condition of their pottery after a number of uses.. Mine gets so dirty or moldy I need to sand it off with my diamond sanding sponges every so often. Thanks.
Thank you! This can happen more with low fire clay because it is more porous. There are a few things you can do to help prevent this. Trimming and or Burnishing the bottom with a rib, smooth stone, or plastic helps a lot. Also hand washing and drying right away. 😊
Hi there, appreciate all the videos and knowledge. Do you have an opinion on the Skutt wheels and how they compare with the Brent CXC or Shimpo VL Whispers?
Thank you. I have used many wheels over the years. I love my Brent CXC but if I were to buy another wheel It would be the Shimpo VL Whisper. I like the fact that it is beltless and quieter than the Brent. Here is the link for you to check it out geni.us/42kbm 😊
No, I haven't. Yes, this is the dusk mask I use when I am working with dry clay and glaze geni.us/qPD3 If you are kicking up any dust, it's smart to at least wear a disposable mask like this one geni.us/TjxcxQ5 To keep the dust down, you can check out this post. potterycrafters.com/pottery-clay-dust-how-to-minimize-it/ Let's stay dirty 😊
You're welcome. Good question. Posture is important when throwing. This post will help. Here is the link for you potterycrafters.com/pottery-wheel-positions-and-posture/ 😊
Really appreciate this video. I was also wondering, do you HAVE to use bats with your pottery wheel? What if your wheel doesn't have bat pins or holes for pins?
Another great video! I am trying to decide between the CXC and EX, is there any reason not to spend the extra $80 for the EX? Noise, cost of use, etc. Thanks in advance! :)
Good question. They are really good. It will depend on if you want to throw really big like 100 pounds of clay😀. The only real difference is the EX can handle larger amounts of clay. They are both really good workhorse wheels. 😊 Hope this helps.
Good question Doreen. No, I don't, the top peep out is just fine.😊 The technicians at Skutt told me it is not necessary as long as the fumes are able to escape. I say techniques because I had called 4 different times and asked this question a few times just to make sure.😃 Happy glazing.
@@PotteryCrafters I made an apron but it's in Montana and I'm currently in San Diego, so I'll send a photo when I return. All of the pottery studios are closed here.😢
Sure! Here is a video of my other pottery wheel ua-cam.com/video/rYm9MvYz_Cc/v-deo.html and the wheel geni.us/r1VewMF And my tabletop wheel ua-cam.com/video/O38FYDxVR4Y/v-deo.html 😍
Good suggestion. Thank you, Clarita. I'll put it on my list. Yes, I would recommend the Brent. It's a great workhorse wheel. If you are planning on making a lot of pottery or bigger pieces, The brent would be the best choice. 😍
Pottery Crafters thank you so much for your response! I’m an absolute beginner and would like to start with an inexpensive wheel. But not sure which one to purchase. 👌🏼😊
You may want to check out this video ua-cam.com/video/rYm9MvYz_Cc/v-deo.html It's a great little wheel for the price. I use it to trim with and make small pieces. 😍 hope this helps
Pottery Crafters yes thank you! I saw that video already! I actually have it in my Amazon cart lol!😂 I just thought I’d look around some more. But I might end up purchasing that one. Thank you!🙏🏻👌🏼😊
I'm trying to decide on an electric Brent wheel, but they have a lot of similar looking options. I don't plan on throwing very large, and that looks like that's the main difference between them. Otherwise, does it really matter what amps/horsepower it has? I'd love input from anyone! That is great. I love my Brent wheel. If you are not planning on throwing large, then the Brent B would be a good choice. Here is the link for you to check out geni.us/X2KEB Enjoy your new wheel 😊
