- Phil Sayer reviews the Alfa Romeo 145, which is considered the baby of the family. He finds out if the performance and handling is as good as the company claims and whether it's a practical car to own.
I've owned one for 14 years. Its the best car i've ever owned and has been very reliable, even that flimsy switch gear still works fine.
As an owner of a 1999 146 (facelift model), I have nothing but praising words about it. Everything works just as it should, trips to the mechanic concern solely oil changes - only fault I had, the horn, one of its two "voices" packed up, need to get a new one - a mere sniff, at 15 Euros.
Very impressed, won't change my bella for anything else. With her 13-month old Koni Sports, she's a delight through corners too.
Same here, Alfa 145 year 2000, used to drive it like mad (1.6 engine, 200+ Km/h), still in very good condition, everything works fine. And it does not have a soft suspension by any measure.
This model just works. Great car. I owned 146 1.4 TS and had it for 10 years and made 200k km without a problem, had to change it because somebody crashed in me. Bought 147 JTDm still works fine, i gave it to my parents tho. And now i own 145 QV with 278k km :D Great cars Alfa Romeos.
Great. Can you tell me more about the different between the 145 and 147?
I had drive a lot of 145/146’s and now i own a MiTo but looking for a 147 2.0. But maybe i will more back in time and go for a 146 again or 145
I owned a 145 QV, and She's still the love of my life!
I still own a 2001 145 QV in Proteo red which I’ve been restoring for a year
It’s simply magnificent
its 2020.The plastics and the blinker, still work ;)
I picked my 150,000 mile 1999 145 Cloverleaf up today.
I agree the suspension is a tad soft compared to other "hot hatch" types of the period but so much smoother and capable of dealing with the pothole infested punchline we call the road network in the UK. I think the 145 Cloverleaf was more of a touring hatch than hot hatch anyway.
I managed my seventy mile trip home on £10 worth of petrol. Very English of me to say £/mile but it works out to around 42.5 mpg. Not hypermiling either, just getting up to the speed limit and sticking to it.
No warning lights, everything worked perfectly and the group fourteen insurance is now a classic policy so it costs less fully comp' than a "Golfastacus" or other anonymous Euroboxes. Looks a damn sight prettier to. As for depreciation? Find a good one for around £1,000-£1,500 and you will have a quality future classic investment that will only go up in value. Find an okay one for around £800-£1,200 and you won't lose anything either when you sell provided you look after the car.
Reliability isn't as much of an issue as some would suggest. Make sure the belts have been done regularly and other consumables diligently kept in check and you will have one of the best cars money can buy.
("Golfastacus" Golf/Astra/Focus - etc. You know the boring crap that should come with sleeping bags instead of airbags.)
Fully agree with all you say, do you still have yours?
Owned my 2000 W reg cloverleaf from new & is still great to drive. Now covered 124,000 miles. My switches all still work too. Ride too soft? You've got to be kidding!
It gets noticed even more now as there are so few around.
mainmahon if you are selling this let me know!
Bit of a boring🔔🔚 really, mine's 23 years old, everything works perfectly, 14000 miles last summer without fault & not for sale at any price, real future classics!
Auto eccellente. L'ho avuta per ben 16 anni e la riacquisterei senza indugio! Ottima Ottima!!!
Never the Wheels, talk about if its FWD-or RWD for handling & making donuts
I have a 147 GTA but would also love one of these in red! I seem to recall that a lot of Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo parts bolts on to these even the engine with a few mods?
What year gta? You already have the better car. Maybe a late model 156 or a 166 would be more worth it.
What a ridiculous review He spends most of it criticising the car then at the very end says it’s a very good car that he’s enjoyed driving. Tell us about the driving experience, not the height adjustable seat and will the switchgear still work next year.

I owned a 1.6 T Spark for 7 years and 120k miles - it was a terrific car, very quick, with a practical interior, wonderful looks and very sharp steering. It only let me down once, when a lambda sensor failed. Other than that it was utterly reliable. Personally I loved the switchgear - very simple to use once you got used to it.
Mine is identical to the car shown apart from a strut brace and mine is lowered, also I've uprated the brakes. It's the only car I've ever had that consistently puts a grin on my face and I love it. Also it's been clocked at 147mph that's fun.
2:17 the brits 😂😂😂? R.i.P. British Car Industry lol
Bottom line is, he doesn't like the car
I had 3 Alfa 145 cars - 1995 1.6 boxer, 1998 2.0 TS QV and 2000 1.6 TS. Most underestimated car of the time, in my opinion best in class and far best for the money. All engines were brutal, no a single failure on all 3 cars during the years. Boxer was really a gas consumer and great sound! I will always remember my first drive comparing to all the cars I have tried at the time. It was like entering a space shuttle. Now I have 2001 Alfa 156 1.8 TS, 300 000 miles, which is another special car, and I have 2007 Alfa 147 1.6TS, I can say 145 was a better made car!
And my 145 switchgear works perfect after 19 years
It also works perfectly on my other 145 QV which is a Phase 1 and 24 years old!!

It seems that alfa romeo got their shit together in the late 90's. Still, If I were to buy an alfa from this era, it would be either a versatile 146 2.0, or a top of the line 166, which seems to be one of the better made alfas over all.
I loved my 145 2.0 cloverleaf had it for 2 years and it had 187k on it and i used to take it out and ring its neck every week. The block revved and revved and hardly drank any oil, but it did have electrical faults engine management lights and the central locking used to open the doors after locking. But i loved it and it always made me smile.
145 is even more beautiful than its sibling I think. wish I could get a JTD one but they are rare.
