As always - Tom is the only one speaking any sense. Camping on the edge of the box and sitting on 1-0 leads is the way every England team in living memory has played - it’s in English Football’s DNA.
That’s just not true though , in the last two tournaments once England went 1-0 up we kept the ball and penned teams in, now we literally have every single person in our own 3rd for half the game against shit teams
@@cairnward4527in the last 2 tournaments? Did you watch us in the final against Italy. Literally scored early and sat on the edge of the box just inviting attack after attack
It might be "English football's DNA" but its still by choice. We actively choose to play that way, were not forced into sitting on a 1-0 lead due to "DNA"
I dont think either of lewis and theo understand how difficult it is to control the ball and possession without a midfielder who can do the same. Playing Rice in a 6 with two midfielders who want to be in and around the box leaves any possibilities for control in midfield. Rice is not a controller, england have one but are very less likely to play him.
Totally agree mate, they just shout ‘press high’ which is precisely what we do we just don’t do it well because Kane struggles to lead a press and clearly the structure isn’t there. It’s still on Southgate but sick of people saying we just sit back by choice, we haven’t been able to really control any games so far that’s not because he’s telling them to ‘camp on their box’
Well go on then who’s had more impact on city’s games this season other than Foden? The only one worth a shout would be Rodri but it’s either him or Foden mate
Omd Foden controls the play for man city my arse😂. Tom is right Spain players since they were young play tiki taka. Theo says why can’t these players play like this for England and the reason is players like Rodri de bruyne enable Foden to do that. Theo is the most stupid person of all time. It’s horrid. hows this even upvoted 😂 if you dont think england have similar technical ability to spain you're regarded. kane, foden, trent have no technical ability? spain havent played 'tiki taka' in 10 years. yes every team goes defensive after they go up 1-0 right? 3 winners out of the last 4 euro matches none of the teams went defensive after going up 1-0 you're smoking crack
What Lewis and Theo were saying early doors about 'extra' teams is correct, they both were referring to how some teams (like Georgia) could be considered 'extra' as they qualified through the Nations League, and that hasn't happened before. The other boys just jumped in thinking they were meaning 3rd place finishers in the groups.
Its actually baffling to me tom doesnt make england park the bus after they a 1 nil lead. Its so fucking obvious he tells them to stay compact and just sit back instead of actually trying to score
Bowden is absolutely right(can’t believe I’ve said that). Look at the last three tournaments. Soon as we played against a good team got knocked out. 2018 World Cup lost to Belgium twice and Croatia. Last euros had Ukraine in the quarters and Denmark in the semis and a Germany team that went out in the group stages in both world cups either side. Southgate won’t tell the team to sit back after a goal it will just be a natural way for the players to attempt to deal with pressure the issue is he does not have the managerial ability to pinpoint the exact problem, find a solution the deliver it to the players effectively to change the game
Theo’s actually thick as shit, the whole reason towards the end of the season Partey started for Arsenal is because he receives the ball on the half turn and plays from the back better/more affectively than Rice. Like in bigger games earlier in the season Artetas exact words for starting Jorginho next to Rice is to give the team ‘more control’ which proves within itself that Rice cannot do what Rodri or the Spanish midfielders can do. Also his horrible Twitter views and getting offended on players behalves if someone criticises them is embarrassing
To answer toms "why is it always the managers fault" because managers are responsible for picking the starting 11 and bench, they decide the tactical setup, the manager is entirely responsible for creating cohesion between the players he not only brings along but plays on the pitch, if players can't play together, ie the golden generation with Gerrard lampard and scholes all fighting for the same space whilst playing together, alongside Beckham who occupied similar space, the managers choose names over fit, especially in England's case which constantly leads to star-studded teams that underperform, Southgate had one half decent tournament in 2018, whilst having the easiest run I've ever seen in a major international tournament, with arguably the weakest team he's fielded he had them playing actual football, yet with all these clearly much more talented players he couldn't find a way to get them playing as an actual team instead of as 11 individuals.
Tom is bang w your culture. It’s the exact same with Scotland and wales. Set up to defend is just British footballing culture and a severe lack of technical ability and passing football
Southgate doesn’t know his best team got a lot of young players coming in with low caps and has used the group to experiment (got some stuff wrong) but managed to top the group get on the better side of the draw and now can hopefully use what he’s learnt to start winning games
controlling game means like kroos who contols madrids and germany's game , he asks for pass every time and gives right pass at right time , he even tells players were to pass AND foden doesnt do that
Toms right apart from not blaming Southgate. Other teams like Spain and Germany have played unbelievably well because of their manager. England lack of a playstyle and the fact Southgate doesn’t know how to put forward his best XI is on Southgate. And, apart from beating Germany, England don’t beat good teams. They brought up two games we won, but ignored every single other game we’ve played against good nations.
He’s still being overly defensive of southgate - their draw in the 2018 WC was ridiculously easy and the only good team they’ve beat in a knockout stage is Germany- one of the worst germany teams ever for that matter
Lewis is bang on about it’s Southgate’s fault. That Germany team which we beat in 2021 got knocked out of two group stages either side of that tournament. In the 2018 World Cup where we got to the semis we beat Tunisia, Panama and Sweden. We drew to Colombia and lost to Belgium and Croatia. The manager has got lucky the whole time and should of been gone a long time ago
As a complete neutral and after watching England in this tournament.. I’d consider dropping Kane (who’s been dreadful) and playing Bellingham in the false 9 and play a Wharton/Mainoo with Rice.. Move Foden inside and play Gordon wide Left.

You cannot say that England can’t dominate a game and play attacking football against Slovenia, Serbia and Denmark. The failure to do so is absolutely the managers, in his tactics, formation and his general philosophy. No one is asking them to play like Pep’s Barcelona but of course that England squad can dominate
Referring to an “achievement” that a manager achieved 6 years ago is crazy. Southgate is 100% the issue , below par manager , with one of the most talented international squads. It really isn’t a hard equation
The way a team plays is ALWAYS on the manager, people stating that is a problem from the players' part when it has looked exactly the same in 3 straight tournaments has fallen on their heads more than three times the last 3 months.
With the way Bellingham can adapt to different roles he is more than capable of dictating tempo, breaking lines and pass progressively. He showed that at dortmund as well.
No Portugal player has created or assisted more than Ronaldo. Lewis doesn't know football. Ronaldo's tournament has been clear of Kane's. not even close.
“Prime tournament football” isn’t happening. They’re just trying to cover over the boring Southgate ball. “Prime tournament football” doesn’t mean having the lowest xg out of any team to qualify for the knockouts despite playing in one of the easier groups, equalling the record for the lowest goals scored by a group combined. And fyi we’re allowed to sack the manager mid tournament Reev. Ivory Coast did it and actually won their tournament.
Tom is spot on. England players are overhyped and they have been carried by their foreign teammates and systems in their club teams. They are all PR. Southgate can’t be blamed for the ball not sticking to Bellingham’s feet or Rice unable to make forward passes.
Since Southgate took over, England has played ONLY 2 teams that were top 10 in the world at the time. Lost to Belgium twice, and lost to France. Not mention lost to Croatia and Italy that weren’t even top 10 at the time. What makes you think they will beat them now?
Yes southgate is a poor manager but I agree with Tom why is it always just on the manager? These world class players, among which are the ballon dor favorite and prem pots, need to perform better regardless of good or bad tactics.
Its just too far either way. It is half the managers fault and half the players fault. It's so frustrating to see these players to escape the level of criticism Southgate gets.
