  • The second Jeans Repair Video.
    This time, I added some explanation of what I am doing on the video. This isn't still "tutorial quality" video, but I believe it can inspire you somehow.
    We are pretty happy with the result of how the pair of jeans look like after the mending.

    I just finished my first repair of my jeans using the same principals. I also found a kit of sashiko patches to stitch before using and l am waiting for their arrival now.
    While l used plain denim for my patch, l did use running stitches with sashiko thread to help in the mending process. I love it. Thank you for your video. It’s great!

      That's great where did you get the sashiko patches from please. I'm contemplating investing £2k in a shasiko machine as it's a much quicker way to make the patches.

      Hi Joy,
      Yes. You are right. I just don't want to open the seam so I can wear them as Jeans. I can stitch back, of course, but I prefer to keep the original work. It is all about the preference, though.

    Hi, i am wondering about the fabric you use. Is it the printed pattern like you sell on the website, or is it stitched all? I am wondering in general as to what fabric is best for jeans mending, mostly around knee (for frayed, to prevent further fraying) and as someone asked below also for crotch area.

    Hi. Does the sashiko thread shrink when the jeans are washed? I would like to sew sashiko stitches directly onto the denim. Does the sashiko thread need to be wet and dried first to avoid shrinkage? Thanks!

    • @SashikoStory
      @SashikoStory  4 роки тому +1

      Hello,
      Long story short, No, "Our" sashiko thread does not shrink when the jeans are washed. The sashiko thread does not need to be wet and dried before the stitching.
      They are cotton 100% thread, so technically it is probably shrinking a little bit. However, based on our experience, it is not significant shrinkage (I don't feel it). Avoid the machine wash for the first few times and no machine dry. In fact, Do Not wash the thread before the stitching.
      Again, this recommendation is based on the specific Sashiko thread we use & recommend. Thank you.

    Do you follow the preprinted dashes on fabric that came with the pattern stamped on. The dashes seem to be much bigger than your stitches

    • @SashikoStory
      @SashikoStory  5 місяців тому

      No, I really do not like the dashes on the fabric as I do not like someone telling me what to do all the time. I want to decide what I want to do instead of following someone's "correct answer".

    • @SashikoStory
      @SashikoStory  6 років тому

      Hi Tiffany,
      The most of the fabric we use can be purchased on our website. upcyclestitches.com/
      We respect the traditionally made Japanese fabric, and I plan to work on listing more kinds of fabric on our website.
      Some Vintage Fabric is available in our Store, as well, either Upcycle Stitches website or our Etsy Store.
      I hope we have something you like!
      If you have the specific fabric you are willing to purchase, please contact us. We will do our best to find it.

      The ring is called "Sashiko Thimble." The regular thimble will be used on the tip of finger, but in our Sashiko, we use this round shaped thimble. We provide it via our website.

    How did you anticipate over one year ago that I would ask you how to pronounce "Sashiko"? Thank you.
    Since this is the topic -- when writing (in English), do you capitalize the words sashiko and boro? Thank you for your time. --nina.

    • @SashikoStory

      We are in Sashiko field more than 30 years, and I have been introducing Sashiko in English more than 3 years. We all have the similar questions :D
      For writing, with mentioning my English for writing rule isn't good at all, I capitalize the words Sashiko and Boro since I understand they are proper noun. (Well, I wrote an article on my website that Sashiko can be a verb, but doesn't become verb, in Japanese, but that is another story here). I hope it helps.

      I have to add this, as an FYI. There is a company that now makes a MACHINE that does Sashiko stitching! It has almost taken away the honorable work that this offered. Baby Lock is the company. I appreciate your offer to help others...learn how to do this. This world just seems to capitalize on any Art Form for the money.

    • @SashikoStory
      @SashikoStory  6 років тому +9

      My pleasure. Yes, I know that there is a Machine for Sashiko. When I learned it many years ago, we were very much worried how the machine will impact what we do.
      Then, we got a chance to look at the actual Machine and our worries were completely wiped away. It is Sashiko machine, but I would categorize the result in completely different types of works. It is not right or wrong. The Sashiko by Machine is good. I just prefer the hand-stitched Sashiko. It is really up to the people who appreciate and prefer.
      It is like a grandma's restaurant and big chain restaurants. They are the place to eat but satisfy the different needs.
      I happened to come to the conclusion of "power of hand-stitching Sashiko."
      As you mentioned, it isn't a great way to make money. In fact, I only can do this because my family provides & support us.
      Speed, productivity, technology & innovation. I am happy with what is going on in the society. I get the benefit from the Internet a lot.
      I just believe that, it is okay to be a strange group of people who tried to tell who we used to be :)
      Sorry for long message :) Thank you for finding us!

    Actually the repairing is called boro, and combining multiple layers of fabric with hand sewn stitches is called sashiko.

    • @noordholland648
      @noordholland648 7 років тому

      they (the japanese workingclass in the 17th century) repaired their clothes with boro, and made clothing/textiles thicker with combining multiple layers of fabric, wich is called sashiko.

    • @SashikoStory
      @SashikoStory  7 років тому +6

      Thank you for your comment.
      Yes, it is one aspect (&description) of Sashiko and Boro. In our understanding, though, Sashiko is a process of stitching to repair, mend, strengthen and decorate the fabric (in short, any activity to appreciate the fabric - Mottainai - too good to waste), and Boro is one of the results of Sashiko stitching and patching the small swatches so called Kogire with hand stitching.
      Since culture of Sashiko and Boro were so ordinary among the Japanese and not structured as the culture, we find it difficult to define the terminology and movement. We keep sharing what we find. Reentry we found out that the Boro was a symbol of shame in a village in Gifu Prefecture. We share these information on our website.
      Thank you!
