    This video resonated with me. I'm a daily drinker - two to five - but my drink of choice is only IPA. Unfortunately for me, this is an expensive hobby, and it's an incredible drag on productivity. Despite my repeated efforts to quit, the allure of a finely chilled ale always seems to rule the day. Both of you have provided me with additional tools that might help me regain control of my consumption. Thank you.

    AA claims that alcoholism is a disease...yet treats it as a moral issue...it's about your 'character defects'...and not about the brain's habituation to alcohol. It is time for a science-based approach to help the millions that struggle with AUD.

    • @kentshultz6157
      @kentshultz6157 Рік тому +5

      Yes, the moral-issue model was the earliest understanding of alcoholism, followed by the disease model. The Sinclair Method (TSM) rejects both. Alcohol addiction is not a disease, says TSM, but a learned behavior-and it can be unlearned with the help of naltrexone.
      Why do some people learn the addiction and others don’t? Well, some people have a stronger endorphin response to alcohol than others. They feel higher when they drink than moderate drinkers do. Some might call that stronger endorphin response a disease, but it isn’t. It is not like the plaques that hinder normal brain functioning in Alzheimer's disease. There is no pathology like that in the addicted brain. It’s just a different brain with a different (and unfortunate) configuration.
      The way naltrexone is normally given in rehabs-"take this once a day, forever, to rebalance your brain, and absolutely never take a drink"-follows the disease model. But TSM recognizes that you don't need naltrexone anymore after you have unlearned the addiction. You might re-learn it if you begin to drink again without naltrexone, but naltrexone is merely an aid for the unlearning (or the prevention of re-learning); it is not a magic pill that fixes some brain pathology (disease) as long as you keep taking it.
      I agree that it's time for a science-based approach! And the learned-behavior model is more scientific than the disease model. I understand why the disease model arose in reaction to the moral-issue model. It was about not blaming the drinker. But the learned-behavior model also does not blame the drinker, and yet it's a more sophisticated understanding of AUD.
      Anyway, I think we agree that TSM is good and blaming drinkers is bad. Just wanted to clear up that TSM is not the disease model. :)
      The developmental psychologist Marc Lewis has a book-The Biology of Desire-on this learned-behavior model of addiction. He does not mention TSM, but his views are completely in line with it. He also has a few lectures on UA-cam.

    I heard an interview with Dr.Sinclair.
    He talked using the Pavlov's dogs example.
    There were 4 things present.
    1) the dogs
    2) the bell
    3) the reward
    4) the salivatory response
    As far as I understand it this converts to:
    1) the drinker
    2) the trigger
    3) the desire
    4) drinking
    All 4 have to be present in this treatment for the following reasons.
    Extinction of the salivatory response was upon removal of the reward.
    So, in order for the removal of the reward to effective, the presence of the other components must be present.
    In other words, the bell has to stop creating desire for alcohol, but that's only effective of the reward is rendered meaningless.

    Seattle native, now DC/Virginia - Thank you for your work Katie! I was a hard drinker, like half a liter of whiskey a night. I overdosed on 2 liters of vodka and while on benzos in hospital I watched about 5 videos, saw the movie, read the book and decided to start, all based on your videos. A big binge almost killed me but then I stumbled on to your channel. So, I just started TSM 2 days ago. I was in a treatment program but I kept relapsing, yet couldn't tell them because they have a 2 strikes and you're out rule. They do strangely prescribe Naltrexone and I got a month of 50mg pills. I'm out of the program and they don't prescribe any more if you're out. There are other doctors that do but like someone below said, they don't take insurance and mine charges $400 consultation fee, then $175 a monthly visit to reorder Naltrexone. That seems crazy to me. And I've already had the liver testing done but these guys want another one, maybe for liability reasons... Can anyone recommend actual Indian prescription websites they have used that have genuine pills and genuine pharmacies? Or are you calling pharmacies directly by phone? It's working and I'd like to stay on it but I feel the C3 doctors are in it for the money. The other near me charges half that but still... Any direct links appreciated. This is working for me and I want to keep going. Thanks, and be good to yourselves.

      "...yet couldn't tell them because they have a 2 strikes and you're out rule."
      Brilliant! Isn't that just about par for the traditional treatment system? What if they treated a cancer patient like that?
      It looks like there are a few choices in Virgina, Teachin. Go to this page and use CRTL and F on your keyboard to search for Virginia, it seems the map function isn't working too well at the moment, so just use your browser search function to search the listings instead of using the map:
      cthreefoundation.org/find-a-physician
      MDProactive.com might be willing to send Rx to a pharmacy in a state they cover, if you live close to the border of one of those states.
      There are overseas pharmacies, but they have odd ordering systems, often don't take Visa/MC or run into trouble with it, there are delivery slowdowns from Dec to Feb, etc.

    • @teachinseoul1338
      @teachinseoul1338 5 років тому +3

      @@herculewayne106 , thank you so much for the recommendation. I registered on MDProactive and reluctantly paid the $50 to speak with a physician. I chose to hit prescription refill as the reason for my contacting them. Which it was, I just hadn't received my first from them.
      I got a call from a Dr. 30 minutes later, was asked why I needed it, explained my knowledge of TSM and he agreed to send a 30 day prescription to a DC (Virginia wasn't available on their plan but I knew DC is only an hour away and was) pharmacy. $50 is much better than $400 initial fee, plus $175 monthly with others... So now I am able to get my insurance to cover Naltrexone, and it will cost me $50 for an internet quack to send the prescription.
      Again, thank you for the recommendation. This is a small victory for those of us wanting a real change and see TSM as our way out, when others are so quick to judge and turn us down.
      Networking is key here and I will pass this info on to anyone else that I can.

    Hi 🙂 I want to share that the first time I took naltrexone I had severe nausea, before even drinking. I've been scared to take it again, but I'm trying again, taking a third instead of a half today. I will say that the first time I took it, I also had NO desire to drink - not even as a result of nausea (my mind would think drinking would take away the bad feels and actually make me feel better). My intuition made up the meaning that whatever naltrexone did in my brain did it so intensely, a different way of accepting and releasing neurotransmitters, that it made me nauseous. I'm also naturally petite and sensitive to other substances and food groups. Who knows why it affected me that way, but the effect was mind blowing, even if it was partially placebo too, and I have a similar sense of innate optimism as you and Kent do, so I'm going to hope my body adjusts within this first month of TSM and the nausea ebbs away! I'll post an update here if anyone else is curious, cause I've been searching for some message like this. Good luck to everyone, and thank you for being you Katie 💕

Then started drink in afternoon and would finish full bottle of rum or scotch . Beers I would finish around 20 to 25 botttles of 650 ml . I was sick of it and at the same time couldn't control . Then my family gave me some medicine and since then I can't drink even if I want my eyes become red an swell , my heart beat becomes fast and I start becoming breathless . Aren't people supposed to drink under TSM (the Sinclair method) to change the brains response...? A cold turkey is really hard on your body, it affects your stomach bacteria flora, which can take months before being normal again. Most serotonin are made in the stomach, I've heard. But I also heard about tummy aches on naltrexone. But rare. I hope, you'll find your way. Seems like you are going in two directions at once these days. Best of luck to you..! Check the video around 40 minutes in...they are talking about side effects there.

      I had really bad side effects the first and second time, not anxiety but very bad nausea, tiredness and a disinterest in everything. This was using Nalmafene. I then managed to get hold of Naltrexone, the first few times I felt only slightly queasy but this has got less and less over time. I'm now about a year and a half in and it definitely works I drink once a month on average. From my experience I would say the ways to reduce side effects are plenty of water, take it with food, have half a tablet at a time. Also if you don't consume any alcohol with it you are wasting a tablet.

      Antony Catlin why is this method not discussed more? I was prescribed naltrexone yesterday and haven’t even filled it yet. I know I don’t wanna quit forever, I just want the urges to lessen and how often I drink to lessen. The NP that prescribed it told ,e to take it every day but not to drink or it will make me violently ill...I’d much rather do this as I want to drink on Friday’s and Saturday’s just not during the week, and hopefully lessen weekends down to just once in awhile. - how do I talk to my dr in 4 weeks about the fact that I didn’t listen to her advice to take it daily and that I’ll most likely need more than just 30 days worth.

    • @DanielJesseLife
      @DanielJesseLife 5 років тому +2

      The same thing happened to me last night. It was my first night. I had bought a 6 pack of beer. I took the pill an hour before my first drink. Already before my first drink the anxiety etc were hitting hard. My appetite went away, so I hardly ate any dinner. I drank 3 beers and had started on the 4th, but just was feeling a much different emotional state not an alcoholic buzz though. I was really irritable too. I ended up pouring out the remainder of the 4th beer and went to bed. I did not sleep at all because my mind and body were so wound up. As today went on I began to feel "normal" again. I am not interested in thinking of drinking when I get home today though - actually the idea seems unappealing at the moment. So I'll go with the strategy of taking the pill one hour before when I plan to drink. The fact that I didn't plow through the 6 pack tells me the science works and it will be worth it.

    Hi - I have been recently subscribed Naltrexone by my general practitioner and am very excited to start the process. However, my doctor, did not ask me what type of alcohol I drink e.g. beer & wine or hard liquor. I have done a lot of research and keep seeing statements that this medication does not work if you drink hard liquor - is this true? And if so, why is this never mentioned upfront?

    • @thrivealcoholrecovery
      @thrivealcoholrecovery  Рік тому +1

      Hi there! It's not that it *doesn't* work for hard alcohol, but it can be less effective. Some people still see progress drinking hard alcohol, but if drunk too quickly or in high concentration, it can overpower the effects of naltrexone. I hope that helps! If you want support on your TSM journey, I invite you to learn more about our program: www.thrivealcoholrecovery.com/the-alcohol-freedom-program. Cheers!!

    These times that y’all do drink are you still using LDN and if so why drink if you are getting nothing from it or is there some slight effect? And is there someone who uses LDN to control drinking and lower it but then still not use it occasionally to get the true effects for one really fun night?

    • @thrivealcoholrecovery
      @thrivealcoholrecovery  5 років тому +3

      Hey there! Just FYR, I don't take LDN but Naltrexone (50mg dose). I would still drink because I still enjoyed the buzz, but didn't have the feeling of "going until I black out." It truly felt like "normal" drinking if there is such a thing. I would enjoy a glass or 2 and be done. I was more present. More clear. My mind wasn't chasing the next drink, I was simply enjoying the one I had. Certainly I've heard of people who take naltrexone for a long period, then decide to drink without it. I haven't heard great things about not being consistent with naltrexone. I can't speak to it personally since I've always taken it, but I've heard from others it can bring back cravings and make the naltrexone feel less effective when you do take it. For me, I wanted to unlearn the alcohol dependence and just get that behind me. it was never "fun" anymore. For others it might be different...

    Hey Katie!!!!
    What's your take on Baclofen?
    Did you ever try it?
    It's cheaper, and supposedly better and safer. And actually works better than Nalprexone.
    Do you know anyone that has had success with it?
    I'm reading a great book by Dr. Olivier Ameisen. The End of My Addiction. Great book.
    He's an advocate of Baclofen....

    • @thrivealcoholrecovery
      @thrivealcoholrecovery  4 роки тому +1

      I don't personally know all that much about baclofen. I have known it to be effective for people in combination with naltrexone (if naltrexone isn't working on its own for them). But I just don't know enough about to to say... my husband is from France and they use it there a lot with alcoholism with good success. In case anyone wants more info about baclofen, here's an article: riahealth.com/baclofen/

    • @thrivealcoholrecovery

      extinction is a place where people get to on TSM where they are indifferent to alcohol. They no longer crave it and are not driven by impulses to drink... but they may still drink from a conscious play of choosing to. I made a short video about this ua-cam.com/video/2HNLqVnGYZc/v-deo.html

    Naltrexone works exactly the same if you take low dose. Research L.D.N.
    It is so much healthier. It also works to quit smoking, when used on a daily basis.
    Do your own research, then talk to your own doctor.

      I hope you have managed to get hold of some since your post. When I was very desperate a couple of years ago, I had success with one online Indian pharmacy but it was very expensive, there are also so many fake online Indian pharmacies that seem to be scams too so I'm not sure that route is worth the risk. Since then Ebay has been the most reliable and affordable, you need to check fairly regularly and buy it straight away as they don't last long. I also used google images and the pharmaceutical companies own website to give me peace of mind that I was taking genuine tablets.

      It depends! I don't know a lot about India pharmacies. I've heard they can be sort of expensive. If it were me, I would go with someone listed on CThree's website. Do you see someone for the state you are in?

    • @shelshock1874
      @shelshock1874 5 років тому

      Yes I contacted a few of them yesterday. They want you to restrict you to 1 drink a day and go to their therapy sessions as well, which is around $200+/month (not including the price of the prescription.) I feel like the point of doing this is to not put restrictions on yourself and allow it to do the work over time, naturally, without any anxiety about wanting the 2nd, 3rd, 4th drink.

    • @shelshock1874
      @shelshock1874 5 років тому +1

      I also tried to contact the telemedicine company with no success. Seems like they just want you to put your CC info in and make a $175 appointment before anyone will speak with you

      Man, I haven't heard of any wanting you to restrict your drinking. That doesn't make sense. I know some of them involve enrolling a program which is designed to help you through the process. I work with Ria Health, they are one of monthly subscription programs that use naltrexone and other medications for AUD. They take insurance too which lowers the rate. I don't know what state you're in though. The doctor I went to in CA (she is no longer practicing anymore) I think I paid about 250 or 300 for my appointment. I hope you find what you're looking for!!
