Truly I appreciate Rudy's Music. BOught my Godin there. Also love the fact that these two masters are playing guitars right off the rack. Note the px tags on the headstocks.
That is one of my favorite places in the whole world to play a guitar -- either in the acoustic room, or atop in the Jazz room, the best is Rudy's in SOHO. Whether talking shop with Gordon, or Rudy, I always feel like a welcomed guest and valued customer. That, and Rudy's is my favorite store in the whole world, period. If you're in NYC, do not miss it!
Again I wish John would put out a book of his chord structures. He's got some of the neatest chord positions. He told me he had no intention of putting out a book like that. I'm sure I wouldn't be the only person buying one. Great stuff.
There's a ton out there! If you want to go the whole hog go for the George Van Eps books or if you research most of it is maths applied to songs with various ideas like drop 2 or 3 voicings, triad subs, chromaticism, etc. I've learnt the best of my stuff off a top-flight piano player. He got bored with my voicings and got me applying shell voicings and triad subs when I was comping with him, bass, drums and sax. A dream come true. :)
Absolutely beautiful playing by both guitarists. As John Etheridge once said, the best accompanist for a jazz guitarist is another guitarist, and these two really complement each other. More please!
+aj pegg I don't know about John etheridge but generally guitar duets are a calamity....a fight for "maximus" r.p.m.....and the same "copié-collé" (scotched copies). The difference is when both are musicians....and John and Anthony are wonderfully .
+Jean-Luc Bersou . For your information, John Etheridge is a brilliant UK based guitarist who toured with Stephane Grappelli for many years playing 'gypsy jazz' and also toured with Soft Machine having replaced Allan Holdsworth. John Etheridge currently tours with the great classical guitarist John Williams, the violinist Nigel Kennedy, the Zappatistas, Soft Machine Legacy and others. He has played with Yehudi Menuhin, Dizzie Gillespie, Herb Ellis (gtr), Mundell Lowe (gtr), Birelli Laurene (gtr), Barney Kessel (gtr) and countless others. He is a brilliant guitarist that can play in many styles and many contexts. Pat Metheny described him thus "One of the best guitarists in the world". John Etheridge made the comment concerning jazz guitarists accompanying jazz guitarists that I quoted in my message on a BBC Radio 3 Programme entitled Jazz Library when he was reviewing what he considered one of the best jazz guitar recordings - Joe Pass 'For Django' (1964) on which Joe he is accompanied by the same John Pisano as seen on this video. Of course the great Django Reinhardt, to whom the title refers, was always accompanied by guitarists! Finally, if you haven't heard it check out the recordings by 'Bass Desires' that feature John Scofield & Bill Frisell for a more contemporary examples of guitarists accompanying guitarists. Also see John Etheridge's website at www.johnetheridge.com I know what you mean about guitarists fighting for maximum r.p.m. but I think that this is an affliction that affects rock guitarists rather than jazz guitarists. I agree - these 2 are brilliant examples of sympathetic accompaniment.
Thanks for your very interesting and detailed answer .As you mention Grapelly...it gives me a spark for John Etheridge .Of course ! I think Martin Taylor and Alan Holdsworth were more "mediatised" .Thanks for your infos " je vais m'y jeter" .Aside rock and Pop Guitar players in the UK were probably more connected to the American Jazz and Songs (standards) and sooner than others players in European countries .A matter of common culture (ex:Rod Stewart ! and so many ).The British Pop of the 60's was so creative .I remember the Gibson Tester English guitarist for Seimatone -Dave Roberts - brilliant ,eclectic and far above what we could imagine .Today the average level is perhaps higher and anyone can learn all day long inexhaustible "lessons" ... Have a Nice 2016 ...
Oh yeah ... my favorite Tadd Dameron song - this is a fantastic version too - very musical, great comping and not a lot of showboating just for the hell of it! Yeah!!
Two masters from two different generations. One single truth: You should always tap your foot while playing (but it does not matter whether you tap with the left or the right one...) 03:26
I think that the challenge is to make solos not sound like scale exercises (instead thinking melodically) unless the sheer geometry of scales and arpeggios is an appealing sound to the soloist.
+PeterDad60 I wanted to add that my Guild only has a volume rotary control and it uses a DeArmond floating pickup attached to the end of the fretboard so there are no holes in the top plate.
I think I know what you mean, that masterful players can make anything sound good - and I agree with you to an extent. But in this case, they're playing guitars of very high quality. In fact they're playing Eastman guitars whose models are named after Pisano. They have his signature on the fretboard. The guitar that Pisano is playing retails for over $4K. www.eastmanguitars.com/john_pisano
Which Eastman guitar models are each playing? I see that's been asked, but any ideas as to what the answer is? I presume John Pisano is playing one of the Eastman models that bears his name, but there have been several.
Rip John sorely missed by me forever but theres gotta be one hell of a jam session in heaven cuz all you in Chicosband must be swingin love Marian Fred Katzes daughter hey daddy say Hi to John for me
Peter Bernstein transcription. Nice. Isnt the aria 17 inch. Pisano 16? So not really apples to apples. But they both sound good. Aria is close to L 5 for sure
Those two great jazz artists are charging up the two fine Eastman guitars with lots of good tunes for the future. I am sure they sold soon after the concert.
***** I have an eastman, they are so worth it. Amazing guitars, and they play really nice too. They look large, and the necks are wider, but my eastman 803ce plays better than some semihollows i've played! Very dynamic. and unique. Every archtop I've tried is different, even if they're the same model.
***** Just got myself an Ibanez GB10. All these years making do with a solid bodied guitar to play jazzy stuff. Can't believe I waited that long. Wait no more XD
If you want to buy an Eastman--be sure to get one with nitro finish. Their urethane has been unbelievably brittle for me. Little bits come of the guitar with minimal pressure and, since it is urethane, you can't dissolve it with thinner and blend in new lacquer.
Is Anthony wilson playing an older model from eastman? I think it's a John Pisano model bc of the frog design on the appointments, but I don't know what Pisano model has a florentine cutaway.
Actually, not so far-fetched. Eric once recorded with the Crusaders (kinda jazz) and also with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Eric is a respected blues player, and "blues is the air that jazz breathes", so there you go.

Don't get any better! Love to hear Anthony Wilson play!! And John Pisano the master!
May we all receive John Pisano's blessings in their fullness.
RIP John. Guitar nights at Spazio were a wonderful experience. Thank-you.
Anthony Wilson...the best and the brightest! Love your playing!
You want to listen to the best jazz ? Listen to these two guys. Both are amazing, truly.
John's rhythm feel is SO good
Amazing guitarists. I still have my AR880 that purchased at Rudy's in 2006 (after John used it). Wonderful instrument!
Truly I appreciate Rudy's Music. BOught my Godin there. Also love the fact that these two masters are playing guitars right off the rack. Note the px tags on the headstocks.
Younger and older, both very fine players.
Pisano's tone is the ultimate clear jazz guitar sound.
Wow! I’m in the presence of greatness!
Wonderful performance... Thank you Mr. Pisano & Mr. Wilson.
Thanks Rudy's Music.
I am quite fortunate to have one of those "John Pisano" signature Eastman guitars.
That is one of my favorite places in the whole world to play a guitar -- either in the acoustic room, or atop in the Jazz room, the best is Rudy's in SOHO. Just spectacular sound these two make. Total masters. Peace Out!
right there, all day long, that's swing, when we say swing, this is what we are talking about, yep.
Two of the most respectful jazz guitar player in the world!. Great to see them play together.
super musicians, super guitars!
That's how "the next level" sounds like. My goodness. What a treat!

Arkansas Red I guess a similarly good suggestion in the absence of the book you desired would be Chord Chemistry by Theodore (Ted) Greene. :)
thanks for the little chat u guys are having here,
im indebted, to search that books to add into my little journey to be a good guitar player.

Great Anthony Wilson (and John Pisano of course)
Anthony Wilson plays an Eastman AR 380CE. Quite rare. Lucky to have one myself. Beautiful instrument.
Just got one so amazing
Fine guitars played by two masters
Love the price tags. Like Minnie Pearl.
Really great playing. What a treat!
John Pisano 's comping ,,,, just so hip :)
When i hear the music like this. I think "Time" makes music cool than any other reason.
Just wonderful. Both such musical players.
The guitars seems to be the AR680CE and the AR380CE, both the pisano's signature model of eastman
awesome duo
So Great !!!
Loveee me some good ol jazz guitar.....
This is absolutely beautiful!
Delicious!
Awesome!!.
So Cool!
Oh Joy!!
Beautiful playing...
what a tone...
sounds great
Excelente una belleza gracias
Oh yeah ... my favorite Tadd Dameron song - this is a fantastic version too - very musical, great comping and not a lot of showboating just for the hell of it! Yeah!!
Pisano shows you how to comp rhythm
With meaningful pauses yet never looses the flow
Ask Joe
Hey, I want a guitar blessed by these artists. The real deal.
D'Angelico
D'Aquisto
Is that blessing you sought?
Excelent!
that old guy looks like he's done this before!
Pisano was good friends and played often with Joe Pass.
Unbelievable!
Muito Bom!

Rudy's Music Stoppp
Fantástico..two masters!

buenisimo!
I think that the challenge is to make solos not sound like scale exercises (instead thinking melodically) unless the sheer geometry of scales and arpeggios is an appealing sound to the soloist.
This is how the grown-ups do it....
Agreed
I have a Guild Newark Street A-150 Savoy (Blond) Archtop Hollow-body that sounds very much the same as these do. Full and rich and fat tone.
+PeterDad60 I wanted to add that my Guild only has a volume rotary control and it uses a DeArmond floating pickup attached to the end of the fretboard so there are no holes in the top plate.
Post a video of you playing it, Pete. We'd love to hear your guitar being played.
what's the name of the jazz standard again?
just shows u that in the 'hands' of masters, the type of gutar means 'nothing'.......fanbloodytastic......

EASTMAN AR680CE John Pisano model, which can be found with single or duel pickup and controls.
@@johnnyconner4184 The dual pickup is an AR380CE not a 680.
@@vechap Ah, yes. I misunderstood. Thanks.
I would like to know what model guitars they are playing

Shit boys, that was heavy!
Peter Bernstein transcription. Nice. Isnt the aria 17 inch. Pisano 16? So not really apples to apples. But they both sound good. Aria is close to L 5 for sure
are they using steelstrings or flatwound strings? Cheers! :D
I'm wondering who tuned up these guitars, with the tags still on? They both sound great.
What model there used ?
We're is Antony now

Good Bait
Anyone know the name of this tune?
Nvm. It's Good Bait
is that curley haired gentleman with the glasses the guitarist I've seen play with diana krall in some of her live concerts?
It is. Anthony Wilson.
Correct.
+fendergasm11 Exactly ! He is anthony Wilson .....playing a blonde
Byrdland for the Blonde singer !
Anthony Wilson is currently on tour with DK. August 2017.
A blonde "59" Byrdland at that ...........:)
a écouter sans modération
The guitar Anthony Wilson is playing has a very good sound comparable to An L4 or ES 175.
AR380CE-HB - The new laminate John Pisano model.

JOhn shows that only 1 pickup is required for jazz.
Eric Clapton !!
Clapton plays jazz
Wtf clapton is such s beginner although he has a great tone all he can do is overuse a pentatonic scale as mix up a few blues licks
Philippe Clement I think it was a joke about how Anthony Wilson looks a bit like Eric Clapton XD

its like a rhythmic changings huh? except the b section is like Vs to infinity and beyond!!
bach quach the bridge is the same changes as an A of rhythm changes but up a fourth
10 reggaeton fans came here and their ears were raped
I have no clue why all these old cats play with the guitar pointing towards the ceiling!?
Vaudeville days, banjoists seem to have started it
Leaning an archtop outwards so that the back of the guitar isn't touching your own body gives it more resonance, I'm guessing that's why.
It's better posture. He does it so his fingers hit the fretboard at a better angle it's also just better in general for grabbing shapes.
nice music nice nice music that is so good it is boring
