This biggest problem I have with capitalism is the commodification of necessities.
Just admit that nature sucks. Stealing these “necessities” (somehow this list grows every year despite us humans being the same) from those who best create them is truly the epitome of immorality.

You know, I think having these discussions are imperative, I find it frustrating that others in my generation, don't seem to see the value in debate and philosophy .
Trumped up question really, it all depends on who you are. Capitalism is most definitely good for the capitalist.

If you are from the US or other western capitalist country, ask this question: Do you know someone who works at a place that creates a product that is used by other people? I'm thinking of a shoe factory, a cellphone factory, and other places of actual production. You will find that there are only a few of them. Yet still you probably have a manufactured job to make it look like you're working for relatively very good money. While companies very cleverly left the countires where they would actually need to pay their workers and found other countries where the salary of a worker is significantly less. Leaving people who are earning money to buy these products to earn profit, while keeping the production costs as low as possible. The further you are from actual productivity the more you will earn, so you can be a consumer. Since communism lost to capitalsm in the cold war, capitalism doesn't have to keep the pretence of humanity and they can focus 100% on profit, wich means that the ideal worker for a company is a slave.
Pretty sure the largest contributor to wage inequality comes from capitalism being a system that encourages corruption of a certain nature. I envision it like a bell curve: people on the rising end have to keep climbing uphill, and people on the declining end can coast on their achievements, privilege and talents. Worse, as the bell curve moves towards the right (indicating greater total wealth), those on the rising end slip further down into poverty, and the very wealthy start to get nervous and start courting politicians to get laws passed that make the entire bell curve steeper.
Abba Okoro Sure, but that seems to be the world we live in. I saw a debate on IQ2 regarding Karl Marx being right, and one of the panelists asserted that capitalism in his conception has never existed in the real world. I'm not necessarily equipped to evaluate that assertion, but perhaps you can shed some light on it.
Abba Okoro is right. The phenomenon you just described is corporatism (also known as crony capitalism). Their are many constrictive regulations in the United States for businesses to grow and develop.

Naive question: can you recommend any videos or video series that would explain how to "save" capitalism without making inequality and alienation (i.e. Marx's fear) or anxiety (i.e. Weber's fear) even worse? Or are you agnostic on the idea that capitalism may or may not be feasible, or may or may not be recoverable?
The U.S. doesn't produce many physical goods anymore, this is true. But for a long time now, the U.S.'s primary export has been culture--movies, games, etc., and that works just fine. There isn't some capitalist god that gives everyone a job to make it look like they're working--the current unemployment crisis makes that fairly evident. Jobs that seem pointless are given because they add appropriate value to the market in some form, even if it's not value that you can appreciate.
And it is also true that, to an employer, the ideal worker is a slave. But this is also true of everything--a socialist worker that takes nothing for himself is ideal.
And you should keep in mind that the people working in those factories wouldn't take the job if they had a better alternative. I don't harbor any illusions that these factories are altruistic in nature, but the fact of the matter is that they provide jobs that people _want_ to take. Not because they enjoy working, of course, but because the jobs are beneficial arrangements.

When you ask: Who does modern capitalism help?
The answer is, Those who own the means of production.
nope. the ones who know how to grow
Any economic system benefits those who own the means of production. It's just that in capitalism barely anyone owns the means of production, while in socialism almost everyone does. In the former a tiny amount of people who benefit are automatically expected to provide for the rest of the people only if they want to, in the latter the people don't need anyone to provide for them as their needs are already fulfilled.
Under capitalism a few people own the means of production. Under Stalinism the means of production own the people.
Who talked about estalinismo?
Stalinism is the source of the practice and ideology of all communist governments. One can ignore the alternatives in the debate between Communism and Capitalism, It is for all practical purposes state serfdom beyond what Lenin could get away with. Subsequent Commie regimes may have condemned Stalin's crimes, but they could not fully refute the reality of the worker as serf.
My shitty propagandic American textbooks did not explain Capitalism this way. Go figure.

I think what people need to understand is that capitalism can generate some good, but also can socialism. Pure capitalism is bad, which is why in today's society most countries (including the US) are capitalists but have socialist policies.
I don't even think pure capitalism is bad. Problems can arise in any system, regardless of what it's supposed to do.

Sounds like it could be amazing if you control for scarcity, but that's pretty utopic thinking of me.
Ideal Capitalism requires competition to run properly. Unfortunately in the world of today we like in a monopolistic capitalism where few companies control the vast majority of products and services. Monopolistic capitalism is where it starts to get fucked up and you begin to really see class inequality. Fortunately there is a precedent for breaking up monopolies in the turn of the 20th century with Roosevelt breaking up the trusts.
To me that is a direct way to improve capitalism as soon as possible, but its pretty evident that an alternative needs to be reached for the sake of humanity.

But that system keeps myself and others of my stature from fucking everything up. There's a reason why we have a minimum wage in the USA, and a reason why we have regulations. @@ealdorman5053 Well not really, I'm an agnostic athiest and I don't 100% agree with communism however I do think that capitalism isn't perfect and we should reform it's flaws. Also why not think outside the box we could create a new political regimen all together that incorporates positive principles of both capitalism and communism. Yes capitalism is factually better than communism but I appreciate it's quite honest and frankly loyal attempt to give everyone equal opportunity you have to admit that goal is quite admiral however in practice it is heavily flawed and communism is worthy of reform just as much as capitalism. That's what I think at least not everything is black and white like most politicans would have you believe. Also what I mean by agnostic athiest is that I do not believe in the christian and catholic gods however I cannot prove that they don't exist no one can and neither can you prove he exists because you rely on faith to believe he does so I personally do not follow any religion and I am skeptical but ultimately I don't know for sure realistically no one does let's be honest here.
Capitalism only falls apart when no effort is made to prevent exploiting differences in other adjacent economic systems, AKA other countries. Stuff like outsourcing, predatory undercutting of minimum wages through foreign labor, and one-sided trade warps the playing field.
Within it's own system and among system with relative parity it works great, and has lifted countless people and nations out of poverty.

The entire industrial revolution and the rise of the modern first world went hand in hand with capitalism.
When countries move toward capitalism, the move upward. As China became less centrally planned, they improved, same with India, same with post-soviet Russia.

So moral of the story is: Capitalism is the best solution we have right now. It has its problems and can be improved upon but we should strive to make a more beneficial, more efficient capitalism. Is this right, can someone clarify?

Joe Cooper centralism works better... namely since it says balls to politics and just cherry picks the best parts of both to balance it out. No one government type is the best, fascist, socialist, capitalist, communist, etc...none of them work. Better to just hash out the best of all types and tweak as we go along. The blind stumbling approach tends to, in the end, work out better for most.
Hm, my understanding of the protestant work ethic was that they believed that success in life was a sign you were predestined to make it into heaven and that's why they worked so hard. If they were destined for hell then nothing they did would change that so it wasn't "Work hard and you'll make it into heaven."

How to fix a couple big basic problems in the world: If we live in a world where capitalism and socialism are both run together, we can have a world where everyone is happy; on the socialism side peoples taxes pay for home, health, education and other basic needs. Now for the capitalist side; food, health and home you don’t NEED will have to be paid out of your own pocket, like we do nowadays, to be clear some things that wouldn't be covered are food like chocolate bars or a 6 bedroom house when you only have 2 kids because you only NEED 3 bedrooms but you WANT 6 so you will have to pay for the other 6 bedrooms yourself. You see your basic need are covered by taxes but your wants come out of your own pocket this way both systems can work in perfect harmony the businessman is happy, the people are happy and homelessness is lowered because if they pay taxes they can get all they need with the relief of our basic needs people can go into jobs they want hence productivity goes up so products are made better, safer and more watched over so they can’t sneak chemicals in because if people want to do that jobs its because they care about it and when you care about something you don’t want it to be tampered with and all this will cause a domino effect making people happier and if people are happy war could be non existent.

Laharl Krichevskoy non sequitur, A free-market and 'corporocracy' (sic) or, presumably, "government by some certain corporations", are not the same thing, aren't even in the same category of things, and are highly unlikely to be compatible with one another. Why would a corporation enforce a free market that would permit another corporation to take market-share from it? In fact, in history, we see the opposite of this. Whenever a company built a natural near-monopoly by good business practices, the loser companies would run to the government and cry 'monopoly,' getting the government to break up the 'evil' winning company for them. If large companies already have government power, then they lobby for protections that prevent competition against them, leading to a less-free market. If companies ARE the government, then free-market competition would be eliminated wherever possible for those corporations that comprise the government. There is no sense in which a corporate-conglomeration-government would be a 'free market' economic system.

From the looks of some in the comment section it's as if we have only two options socio-economically: capitalism or communism. There are other alternatives and ideas out there other than these two. Resource Based Economy, Anarcho-Syndicalism are two I'm interested in. Thoughts, feelings, emotion?

Something else to consider and kind of related to what is mentioned in this and the last episode about capitalism... technology is making great steps fowards with amazing progress. Robots and computers can replace human workers in many areas, often doing more and better work without much of the hassle human workers bring as baggage. Yet while we load of more and more work to machines and smart programs we still live in a world in which there general idea seems to be that you have to "earn your living".
I'm sure humanity will adapt to that over time by shifting the importance of certain jobs, but the transition can still be hard and people will be left behind stranded in poverty.
Watch the Science Channel show "How It's Made" and you'll see this in action. Trucks dump plastic pellets into a machine at one end, and at the other end, out comes wrapped pallets of disposable ball point pens. Granted, they sell 10 for a dollar, but no human had to really work to make them (beyond initial setup of the machine, and periodic maintenance).
When all products are made this way - Where does the money come from to buy such a product? Do you need money to buy this product? How does one acquire this money?
Making the pens without the machines (retreating into Luddism) would make those ball point pens too expensive to be cost effective. So - that's no answer.
The real answer is that capitalism and socialism both are dinosaurs, and some sort of "Third Way" is going to be required in the future. As manufacturing costs drop because of automation, we're going to cross a tipping point where more automation makes creating things cheaper, but reduces the demand for the product due to poverty below a volume that allows it to be so cheap....And that's when we'll need a new economic system.

And while I would love for the world to become some post-scarcity utopian where most jobs are being done by robots and programs while humans can enjoy and explore life, I just fear it won't happen.
Without trying to sound like a tinfoil hat... the rich powerful wealthy elite is just too comfortable in this status quo and will probably fight every step on the way to a better system or try to subvert it from the start.
And they've become pretty bold in showing how much they've corrupted democracy...
They can reduce production costs of goods while keeping the price high, keeping people poor by demanding these high prices while piling up the money.
Digital distribution of movies, music, books and videogames are probably the most glaring example.
Or this big push of corporate greed to abdondon net neutrality so they can extort the consumers even more while lying through their teeth. Same with other industries who try to lobby and push for laws behind the peoples back, all in the name of profit.
Copyrights and Patents are also being used to suppress innovation in some cases.
It is sometimes hard to stay optimistic, I love scientific and technological progress, but oftentimes when I hear of that progress I also cannot help but think about how this can and will be abused.
Capitalism, regardless of it's origin, has proven itself to be the most efficient method of economic governance due to the selfish nature of man and the effect competition has on innovation and productivity. It can also be turned into a morally good system, if adequately regulated (see the nordic model).
"the selfish nature of man". I think you're inadvertently proving the point of the video, in reaching a sort of theological conclusion about "the nature of man". The nature of man is determined by the economic superstructure, not the other way around.

I don't think you know to whom the nordic model is a refference to. It represents Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. These countries have a VERY high standard of living and none of them have 60% of their population living below the poverty line (not even remotely close, especially Norway). Check your facts.

Actually, I would argue the opposite. The reason socialist economies lack severely in labor/production efficiency in comparison to capitalist economies is because of our selfishness, reflected either in the laziness of the workers or the incompetence, indiference and corruption of the political class. I do believe, however, that if we were to have a competent and corect political class, socialism in the case of large companies in specific fields of activity (like energy, transportation, agriculture, resource extraction, research and development etc.) would work. The only reason an employee from a state-owned company or institution will be less efficient than one from a private company is because his manager(s) are incompetent and/or corrupt, and, as these managers are chosen by the political class, it is in this class that the fate of the economy lays. Small and medium enterpries should remain private, as they generate innovation through competition and it would be too complicated for the state to own and control so many small economic entities.

Calvinism has many problems. Why would you work hard to prove you were the elect. It makes no difference. If you can't control whether you are the elect, then there's no reason to do anything. And thus Calvinism is more like socialism with losers than it is like capitalism.

Though If you are a brother in Christ then ill clear up some understanding of Calvanism for ya 😊 By saying you work hard to prove election, wouldn't be election as election means freely given Grace by God for nothing. Though we need to synergies faith without works is dead and youll know true belivers by their fruit and the lukewarm Jesus will spit out.
Once True repentance and True Salvation is applied to the heart of man it fundamentally changes the core of that individual indefinitely. Sin will still be an issue but we crusify it and wrestle it to the ground. You become overwhelming involved in Christs bride (his church) doing what you can to support and grow her while hes away. Also you feverishly proclaim the Gospel as it is the power of God to save souls and because as Christians we care about the outcome of the lost going to hell. I find Calvanism a great way to dive deep into the scripture (systimatic theology) but not to say a child cant also pick up and understand scripture and be saved same as me😆. Hope Reformed Baptist Church is my church if you wanna check out some top sermons or Matt Chandler or John Pipper or Paul Washer....

They advocate spreading the gospel, but their ideology makes the point moot.
There's no reason to evangelize. If the elect are the elect, they remain the elect no matter how they receive the gospel, or if they receive it at all.
There are many verses in the Bible that support Calvanism, and many that oppose it.
So, it's clear to me that Calvanism is wrong, but so is non-Calvinists view of the gospel. Therefore the distinction is unnecessary.
There is a command to spread the gospel, and either you will be obedient, or not.

See no man is saved without the gospel being proclaimed but only the elect are given the ability by God to put saving faith in the fact that Jesus died for all my sins and so turn from evil and put my trust in him alone. Like Jesus said "No man comes to the Son unless the Farther who sent me draws them". 2 basic reasons why a calvanist proclaims the Gospel 1 noone has a stamp on their head that says elect therefore we go to all tounges and tribes. 2 The Farther can draw an individual at any stage in life so we dont stop even after initial rejection. Unsure how you missed that if you deeply understand calvanism?

Then why does he need humans to spread the gospel?
Does God have a limit on his drawing ability? He can only draw them 20% of the way?
Do you become elect because of God's action of drawing, or because some dude came by and told you the gospel?
You see, if God is God, and He elects, then nothing man can do changes that, including spreading the gospel.
If, however, men choose and freewill, then spreading the gospel does actually have an impact.

In the end, my biggest point is that the distinction is literally unnecessary.
There is no need to understand or put belief in the specific interpretation that Calvanists chose.

This is a facade. If allowed by laws capitalists would keep slaves who work for free. In the free market the only rule is to achieve maximum profit with minimum investment. There's no morality involved. If not for unions, strikes and the danger of encroaching socialism in the 1st half of the 20th century workers would still be working 14 hours a day for a wage barely big enough to cover bare necessities (for references look something up on the life of workers in 18th and 19th century Britain).

Your argument that it would give them a better chance is pitiful. The reasons why the corporations can do so well is because they can mass produce for cheap. Farmers used to own their farms and sell their goods at a profit to themselves but kept it at a fair price as to be competitive. Now corporations own the farms and buy them extremely cheaply with the farm as collateral. If a farmer wants to go and make his own farm and sell lettuce he wont be able to because the price he needs to actually survive will be way more expensive than the price the corporations will pay for it and thus he is shut out of business. Letting the minimum wage go would only help big business which is already crushing small business under its foot.

The only reason we have any of the modern innovations or wealth that we enjoy is due to capitalism and the rewards it promises. Communism, socialism, collectivism, progressivisim, or whatever the neo commies want to call it, is a perpetual failure. It has always failed. It has resulted in millions of deaths and atrocities. And the fact that the west currently is gravitating back to it is a testament to our poor educational systems. If you want to extract value from society, you have to provide value for society. A job is a form of trade. If the value of labor declines as technological innovations progress, it just means the labor must innovate and adjust. Collectivism doesn't work--even when capitalism becomes harder to participate in.

However the economy is not only going to tighten, but grind to a screeching halt as a result of technology; there is only so much room to innovate, just as there are only so many ways to accommodate one another. I finished school last year and was shocked by how hard and undesirable work actually is. I dont have any kind of dream job, because the things I'm interested in dont get you money to live. Everything would be fine if I could find some job for 6 or less hours a day that is secure and provides everything I need. But that doesnt seem possible in our current society.
What I wont believe is that it just isnt possible to create a society in which we are not forced to work harder than necessary.
If all workers collectively decide that they won't work for 8 hrs per day, then corporations and business owners will be forced to reduce the required hours. If all workers collectively decide that they need higher pay, and therefore quit all low-paying jobs and demand higher pay, corporations will be forced to provide higher pay. Capitalism is not slavery. You can refuse the working conditions. The best case scenario for workers is unions or collective negotiation. Capitalism is supposed to be a win-win situation where workers get a wage they're happy with and business owners get a profit they're happy with. If workers are not happy, they must collectively negotiate or strike or not go to work

"Japan is way more capitalist then America" is questionable at best, Japan's government spending to GDP ratio is 33% higher then the US. And yes the US does import more from Japan then we export, but this has much to do with the weak Yen vs the USD. In 1995 Japan's GDP was $5.3T and the US was $7.7T, today Japan's GDP is $4.9T and the US is $16.7T... see the problem? Also, just because it has a Japanese name, does not mean it was made in Japan. The US has a lot of companies that make consumer products, but very few make them in the US.

Thus their is still a profit motive in the good 'free' games, and making a game good will help generate more money for the creator. Your point is invalid.

Video games are good because they are fun. The for-profit aspects actually detract from that. I know folks who work for free-to-play games with paid content and they're stuck in a situation where they have to allow some cheaters because some of them spend way too much money to justify banning them. Plenty of great blue collar opportunities that no one wants that pay way more than my office job. Some operators double my pay and still sit in the office most of the time.
That said, Louisiana and many other states offer full scholarship if you perform well in school. I'm sorry, but I can't offer more than that.

We should encourage people to analyze the negative aspects of human ideals, even those we might hold in great reverence, because only by knowing and understanding their faults are we able to improve on them.

Everything stated in this video holds up to reality. My father may lose his job tomorrow, even though he has slaved away for this corporate enterprise. He is constantly inset ivied to meet targets, work long hours. He has given his life towards his job for almost thirty years. He has let relationships fail and burn in the name of "hard work." I'm not sure if he'll be happier with or without, but we need the income. How are we supposed to survive with no viable income?
