I had a 1975 hallberg Rassy rassmus 35. Thick hull, great layout, powerful Volvo penta Md. 21a, 75 hp. Sailed it in heavy wind, it was good. The bathroom was too small for me, and I had no septic tank, only a pump out. Comfortable in zero degrees too….and the deck drains were nice to have. Great boat! Feels light and was safe in 4 meter seas!

I have a 1971 HR Mistral. I never back it out of the slip and I don't have bow thrusters. I just tie a 30m line on a one of the stern cleats and to the last one on the dock, push the boat out of the slip and than when it's clear of all obstacles, I bring it back with the line. Ready to motor or sail forward out of the slip. In my opinion, that one is not a real con, just pushes us to be a bit more creative with some limitations.

Keep at it man. If the job can be done in the water, do it in the water. You'll fall back in love with the boat once its back to being a boat.

I didn’t realize you had an aft cabin, that’s so nice. Great to see you again, hope all is going well and thanks for the episode

Yeah its pretty nice and either you can put a diesel heater behind the aft doors, or you can have a lot of storage space.

New Rasmus owners here and here's a few thoughts:
Diedel tank: you can put s second diesel tank, I think I saw one do it in the Rasmus FB group. I also saw a nice thing a guy did: put a pipe from the tank to a second racor water filter and then back again, powered by an electric diesel pump (they seem very cheap, like 20$). There's a lot of shit down there, so adding a additive to kill bacteria seems like something one must do if you don't want to kill the engine over time.
Water tank: tough. I just installed a three filter system with UV light to kill bacteria just before the faucet. Messy that it's 220v AC, and the lamp seems to be a 6v AC - so I can't just connect it to the 12v bank. Been thinking of adding a simple aquarium UV lamp in the tank to kill anything down there. Run it for 2 minutes per day, and the water should keep really good. Most people just put chlorine water additives plus a carbon block... I went the extra mile though but will still add the additive.
Rudder: Several owners extend their rudder on the Rasmus. Maybe that's for you? I really really dislike how hard it is to turn and really wished I put a bow thruster too like you did this winter. The yatchmaster (båt praktik kustskepparintyg) course had a nice practice where we learned the prop wash technique - without it it would be hell... Well it still is - but at least I can make it work.
Great the keel only sticks down 1.3m, but its not not great up wind. Pretty sucky and broad reach is really rocky. Would have been nice with 15cm more down. I've actually thought about extending it downwards ;)
Speed: Other boats are not that fast either if they are not catamarans. When it comes to a displacements boat, it's hull speed that defines maximum speed which is decided by the length through the water.
Another con is the small living area, but you solved that nicely with that foldable table!
Boat for money: I love what I got with the Rasmus! Hard to beat. Love the boat. Really safe and perfect to sail around the world with.

Mikael, Thank you for taking the time and share your thoughts, this is why I'm doing what I'm doing here, to share my story and then l have amazing people like you who are helping and sharing information.
It's already been really useful information for me and like l said l learn by doing the things, if l messing up something completely, I'm happy that people don't judge me too hard 😄

I see no problems with the fresh water tank in Hallberg Rassy 35. I open the two manholes after each season. I connect a thin hose to the high pressure washer that seeks its way into the hidden spaces with the help of backward jets that flush loose particles back into the tank. Then I dry the tank and put on the manholes when everything has dried. Clean and tidy and we drink the water which tastes good.(hope you understand my google English)

First of all, thank you for your comment, l understand you very well. l thought l can do like you, but when l open all the hidden places l discover the very sad situation. The problem is that the Glass fiber down there where the hull meets with water tank ceilings, it's creates the triangle and its raff surface impossible to clean so it creating the perfect place for bacterial to live.

@@coldnorthadventures5905would it be possible to fill the inside with a rubber bag water tank? Or several of them?

I know it's a bit of a pain, but I believe you could have saved time and money by just filtering the water before you drink it. If you spent 40 hours doing it and your time is worth $30 an hour, after 30% taxes that's $840 minus materials.
For $60 I can get a gravity filter that will filter 3700 liters. 🤷

nice explanation, one question, what do you mean by the average speed of this boat? to 2000 revs of motor that speed?5.5 kts ? 6 kts ?

Stay away from boats that have only a handful of bolts holding the ballist to the boat
I go aground plenty on my Morgan Out Island 33' and she don't mind a bit

Your Hallberg Rassy history is not really right. Harry Hallberg and C Rassy were competitors and Rassy finally bought Hallberg and kept name as part of company. But they were never working together in the same company😊
