Pro tip: When using the Pen Tool, don't just click for your first point if you're going to be making a closed shape. If you do that, you'll end your shape with a weird, janky connection rather than a smooth, seamless curve. Start your shape out by clicking and dragging from your first point so that when you complete your shape, it looks so much cleaner and more professional.
Back here now... I just passed the halfway point... I just started from scratch... almost zero draw skills... your tutorials are thorough... it's advanced my draw skills... can't wait to fully finish this lil mushroom guy... Update just finished it... it turned out awesome. Your tutorial was great. Your drawings are amazing.
Absolutely amazing. Thank you very much! I am on my way to becoming an illustrator, and this tutorial is one of the most comprehensive out there, and extremely helpful.
Me too I am planning on buying Affinity and this video helped to explain it in a practical lesson. I have over a decade of experience using illustrator, but I don't feel like paying those subscription fees every month 🤑
You are a master with this application. I've been using it for years and learned a bunch of new stuff from your video. The way you do the shading and the blur option is very helpful. Thank you.
I went through this to learn more about affinity and vector stuff, and I re-designed the logo of a dude I know from twitter. I'm quite happy with the outcome. Thank you for making this!
Thank you so much Danilo! I am an absolute beginner and thanks to your video I was not only able to recreate shroom guy, but I have learned so very much in the process and completed a couple on my own ❤
Out of the dozens of vector art tutorials, tips and tricks, speedpaints.. This one video has helped me significantly wrap the idea of vector art around my head so I can know a little about what I'm doing
for a pretty advance knowledge this tutorial is really well explained. I took Graphic design in adobes Creative Suite. They gave us a book with a computer and said good luck.. ha. i did a stealth jet as my first illustration. I could never accomplish the shadows as well as you did in this tutorial. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've done a numer of very simple tutorials, and they were great places to start for someone who has not experience with digital graphics, but this tutorial filled a gap between simplistic and complex, showing/teaching what you're doing. Thanks again!
Superb!! this is really the best AFD tutorial that I have found on the web so far. Danilo Fiocco you're a master of AFD. Keep up the good wonderful work.
This was such a great tutorial, you packed so much into a relatively short video. I was able to reproduce the Mushroom Guy (pretty close), and I have never used Designer or know how to draw. I need to get a lot better with the pen tool, but It was a blast! Thank you so much.
Oh really! That's great to hear (read), Kathleen Make sure to check the Capybara series, it's more thorough. The mushroom one I did in a rush. LOL Cheers!
This is a terrific tutorial! Thank you for going step by step and explaining - not just doing a speed art. Please keep doing these! Side note: perhaps use a few different background songs to break it up a little? and don't be afraid to keep them low volume and in the background. There were a number of times the background music got very loud all of a sudden. keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for this tutorial Danilo. It was very helpful to see your process. I only saw your comment about the new tutorial now an will definitely check it out.
Wow! I'm a total newbie so not even sure what you are doing technically, but you showed me what is possible! I picked up some good tips, love the bit about the artboard, that really helped me. Thanks for taking the time to post, much appreciated.
Thanks for this. The shading & highlighting method you used wasn't what I expected, but I also don't know what I expected. I wish there hadn't been any jumps in any of the steps/processes, but this is so much better than most videos I've seen so far. Definitely going to check out the other one you linked to in your pinned comment.
Great tutorial man...just keep posting like this content using affinity product, coz I'm my self using affinity too. and hopely you channel will be the destination for every affinity users in the world....thanx
Great tutorial, Danilo. I love that you didn't speed it up and with the commenting it's very educational. Love to see more of these. :) Thanks for sharing, mate!
Thank you so much for your great video. I find it amazing how to make a 3D illusion by using the shading and highlighting effects in Affinity Designer. This Video can help so much.
your video makes me think it might be possible to make anime art in vector, i for a long time thought vector was just for very simple basic stuff like logos
I don't see why not. But it's just a means to an end. I'm more comfortable with vectors, that's why I use it. Go with what you're more comfortable with and you're set :)
A very informative and complete tutorial. One of the best I've seen. Danilo is an excellent teacher and has certainly delivered on this one. Thank you for this video and please consider creating more like these.
Such a good tutorial. I illustrate occasionally (I started out as an illustrator and eventually became more of a designer so don’t draw much anymore) and actually forced myself to learn affinity by doing some illustrating for about a year. I use some of the same techniques ( i sometimes draw in paper. Sometimes use the pixel persona in affinity or sometimes just skip it) a lot of my illustration style uses basic vector shapes instead of drawing a lot so its a little more design oriented. I also often create different artboards but its just as progress in the drawing instead of for each step. I also dont create a version with just the flat colors which makes a lot of sense. It never occurred to me and ive been doing this a long time. Thanks for the tutorial. Some great tips i can use the next time i want to draw some characters.
Thank you so much for sharing your tips and tricks. It is amazing how easily you transformed that image. I loved your video, it was clear, easy to understand.
Excellent tutorial. I learned so much about shadows and how to visualize them and technique all from this video. I could not recreate on my iPad because I couldn’t find all the tools. I would love to see the same video adapted to ipad.
Thanks! I’m with you that one, since I have a hard time adapting my workflow to the iPad version. I’m too shortcut-dependent. Gotta get ahold of an iPad keyboard to try it out though and see for myself. Who knows? Maybe then I’ll make a tutorial for it Cheers o/
The final part you did with combining rastarized layer with the vector layer. How did you do that? Suddenly the vector layer just disappears in the video @45:23
i orimarily use procreate and havent used any vector apps before. i still have hiccups in drwings stuffs in vector apps. but now am a bit closer. used this tutorial for affinity ipad because theres not many available for iPad version
It's quite the opposite in my case. I feel kinda uncomfortable when I'm using procreate. Whenever I do a sketch, I go "ok...this sucks, but I know I'll make it look dope by the time I vector it". At the end of the day it's all a matter of getting used to your process and having fun along the way, right? Cheers!
Wish I knew your channel 2yrs ago when I first got AD I needed to draw fashion illustration I struggle sooo hard with my surface pro 6 and trying to work out how to draw shading, lighting my work just looked disgusting not how I wanted at all and having ADHD was even more frustrating in finding how to do such simple sketch/cartoons. got krita Still wasn't happy because something AD had krita didn't 😠😡what I'm saying is thank you so much for this tutorial super appreciate it learnt so much in just 1 video than Affinity site itself!!! 😁Thank you
Yay! Thanks! ! I’m glad I could be of some help. I know what you mean. I’ve been there before. Frustration will come and go. If you work your way through it, you’ll see that there’ll be a moment when everything clicks and you feel amped to go even further 🙂 Cheers o/
This is an amazing tutorial! I love how I was able to follow alone so easily. However when you made that arrow for the direction of light……. I just realized how much you actually know lol hahaha that was so fast!
Awesome tutorial and the music didn’t bother me. Although a lower volume would be fine. I’m going to check out your other tutorials. Love how you explained as you went. Thank you. I know it’s know it’s time consuming making these.
That was great to watch. Been wanting to get into illustrating but it's always looked daunting. You take the 'dawnt' out of it... especially with that cute lidl guy... Nice work, and excellent tutorial. It would be helpful having a little more volume on your mic so we can listen in a little easier - that's my only critique if you don't mind any constructive input. Subscribed and hope to learn more... from your past tutorials and your new ones.
Really useful tutorial, thanks. I wish you'd gone into a bit more detail about the gradient tool though. I'm struggling to work out how to do a transparent grad fade.
Hey Trev! That's a good idea for a quick tutorial. You can definitely use the gradient tool for fading, but to make things easier, use the gradient tool exclusively for color grading and the transparency tool for fading (shortcut Y). Hope that helps
Hi Danilo, Thank you so much for your video! I've been using it as a refresher before getting back into some of my own projects. It's been very helpful. However, I'm totaly stumped on the transparency tool. For the arm, has to did you get it to apply to the arm layer and the child layers inside the arm? And when I try to apply it to the leg, set to elliptical, I can't get it to make just the very top of the leg transparent, it keep showing the body underneath, no matter where I move the tool. Any help would be much appreciated.
Wow! Amazing tutorial! My head hurts thinking about trying to recreate this 😂! As a complete beginner I'm going to have to watch this a good few times before attempting it 😬. Please keep making more videos like this. From my perspective, it would be interesting to see how you might change/add to the process to age this character (or others).
What did you do with the color there at like 23:12 to 23:18? Was that a gradient, or were you changing the gaussian blur properties, or what exactly? (edit: Never mind, figured it out!)
Best Affinity Designer tutorial I've seen, hands down. Thank you for taking the time to put this together, Danilo! That makes total sense! How did I not think of that? I always had trouble fixing the jankiness after the fact. Dang
Thanks for the tip, mate! ;)
that's what keyboard shortcuts are for.
this is a great tip, thanks!
if I knew what is meant ? 🤷🏼♂️
The way you used shading with vectors is an inspiration. I also learned how to approach light and shade - thank you for your excellent tutorial.
