    This video is so important. A lot of others badminton video that teaches badminton smash grip only mentioned the V grip and did not mentioned the change of 10 degree while smashing. When i tried it without the slight 10 degree change, it goes way left and puzzled me a lot. Thank you Coach Lee for explaining this. It clear my doubt.

    Coach Lee, this video shows the answer of what I have been wondering for many years. I was always lost the power of my smashes even though I maximized my wrist power and after I watched this video, I am realized the racket head should be turned about 10° to make the string bed hits perfectly perpendicular against the shuttlecock. I have tried this and the result is very satisfying, my smash generates more power.
    Many many thanks coach Lee !

    Hi Lee, Since i started watching your clips, my focus has been changed to play better badminton rather than only winning games. Initially i used to get angry on myself when lost a point and used to loose focus, but now i am bit calm and focus on technique improvement as per your suggestions here. Thanks for your valuable videos and taking time out from your busy schedule to solve our queries. Thanks Coach Lee.

    1) I have so much more to about learn about Badminton than I thought
    2) Your standard of English makes me try harder when learning to speak French.
    Thank you for your coaching.

    You hoped right! I feel that the power transmission from the shoulder up to the wrist is direct now. Though I lack a bit control initially (having used a flawed grip for years), my smashes and clears are now easy and powerful and make that awesome whiplash sound!

    That is a good question, in my view without changing the grip you have to rotate more and it cause biger swing. There are many different situations in a match and you need more then one kind of hitting skills as some situation you do not have time to rotate your arm and wrist in that case you even need to change grip more and have to use fingers to hit. Rotating is right way but the amount of doing it can be different and changing grip would help. Lee

  • @coachingbadminton
    @coachingbadminton  13 років тому

    It could be similar but you may try that if you are a right handed player and smash from your right hand rear court to cross court then change grip a little less. Please try a few different ways and let me know what you have found. Lee

  • @coachingbadminton
    @coachingbadminton  12 років тому

    I can think of a good reason for that. Because of you are trying to make the highest impact point, you are stretching your ellbow too early which gives too much pressure on your elbow. Please move your impact point much more to infront of your body from the highest point (may be it is above your head now)
    It will give much more comfort and power. Lee

    You point out the problem that I`m facing. I always get a slice smash (change wrist, not change grip). I haven`t been attended any badminton classes so all the techniques that I learn come from my team-mate. They teach me that I should grip neutral in every situation and I always wander that how can I have a power smash if I keep the neutral grip. Thank you sir.

    There can be many things. Self believe, tactics, awareness, skill, fitness, experiences and so on. Some district player may have better skills then international player but his experience and self believe may lower then the other. It can be said a lot different but same it can be also said a very little different. One of difficult question. Lee

    This is very useful indeed, I could smash it to the direction that I want when I hold the grip like yours without turning too much my body. When I do overhead smashing, I do not have to bend so much my waist to do it after I changed my grip. I shared this to my friends, one of them said he was trained by a China coach and told that I should not change the grip and I need to turn the body to suit the angle. Maybe different coaches have different smashing methods, but I like your way, my smashing power and accuracy has improved a lot after I changed the grip. Thanks.

    Flat smash means that your grip is near the panhandle grip. Instead of chaging 10 degree, you may have changed 20-30 degress. try to change just little bit. In singles, you have to cover wider court then doubles so it would be much eaier to attack/forcing your opponent and limit opponent shots rather then giving him all the options.

  • @leonamae21

    nice technique sir. you really explained it properly. smash is really my problem because the sound is not as crispy and not strong as other players. i noticed the shots are sliced. this video maybe the answer.

  • @coachingbadminton
    @coachingbadminton  12 років тому

    That is a very good question. You still need to do fore arm rotation.
    But this way you need to do it less and be able to make more clearn
    impact and make less poor shots. Lee

    Let say you do pronation for 10 lenth. If your opponent do attack clear to your backhand corner, you aqre not able to do it because of you do not have time and space for it. Then your grip have to be changed and the pronation leng should be changed to 2 or 3 from 10. Less pronation gives you more deception and be able to make shot under pressure in short space. Lee

    There are different ways to hit also different ways of hitting skills are need in different situation. It is better to try all of the different ways then choose the one you like. Unless you have try them how do you know which one really works for you. Fore arm rotation is good wehen you have time but when you are under pressure, you wont be able to use it because of simply you do not have time and space to use it. Lee

    I think you should be able to hit smash where you want. It is fine that you smash to your opponent body because of that was the best choice of shot at that moment. If you hit your opponent accidently, that means not good as you are not able to control your smash not because of you hit your opponent. Of course your should indicate sorry to your opponent even it waqs tacticly right. Lee

    Try more attack clear, sharp slice drop or check smash. Your net shot has to be ealier then your opponent. Use more strait shot then cross shot in this way you are giving them less time and not openning your court. Finally remember will to win is the best skill. If you have all other skills but will then you lose. Lee

    Hi Coach. I'm a big fan of your coaching skills. One question is that I think I'm using "pronation" of arm with eastern grip. The suggested grips change is for club-level players or the elite players also do the grip change? No pronation is involved in this swing? And how about in making high-clears? Thanks!

    I am using the same skills but much less and using more wrist action. There are all difefrent situation in a match sometime you can do full swing and sometime you do not have time and space to do full swing. I think players should be able to do all different ways and be able to use the different ways of hitting skills in different situations. As I am using less rotation, my action will be shorter and compact therefore I can do more deceptions.

  • @coachingbadminton
    @coachingbadminton  13 років тому

    @Piranhajaw23 Hi. If you do then you will have problem for your backhand shots. Yes your forehand clear should be used 10 degree changed grip. It is depending on how much infront of your body you are taking. You should have ready grip first and you see opponent shot and then change your grip as required. Lee

    Hi Coach Lee, after watching this instructional video of yours, i finally cleared a huge doubt on the smashing grip. Previously i always ended up smashing with the basic grip or panhandle, resulting in weak smashes and sometimes straining my wrist and forearms. Now I'm able to exert force more naturally without injuring myself.
    I have a question though. Does the tilt has to be maximum of 10 degrees? Because today when i tried, i was very consciously trying to get the grip to rotate not beyond 10 degrees, resulting in me missing smashes as i hit too late. When i was not trying to focus on get the specific 10 degrees rotation, i was able to hit more naturally, but i realized i was probably rotating it between 10 - 20 degrees. Would this pose a problem on the power generated?
    Thanks!

    • @coachingbadminton
      @coachingbadminton  9 років тому

      No it will not cause problem. Depennding of the impact point and how early and late you are taking the shuttlecock, the amount of change grip can be differ. The most important thing is you change it to make your feel right, hit it accuatly and hit clear and make more clearn force to the shuttlecock. Lee

    You should be able to learn to forget what mistake you did but focus what you are going to do next. there no one can play a match without mistakes it is a part of game. The important thing is who does it less and who ndoes it less in curucial time. be hapy with your mistake and learn from it and be able to create something chahe something based on your mistakes. lee
