It's rewinding because it's tight try spraying between the case and the spools with dry silicone like ttp ds100, forward and rewind it a few times
Won't that damage the tape though?
It's working perfectly fine now it was probably just some silly thing I got a new VCR in January and I've played it in there and plays fine
