Omg this is insane to me that you’re posting this - I was just at the greenbrier in July, my mom works for World TeamTennis, who as you mentioned in the video moved their season there for 2020 due to Covid. I got to stay there as a result of her job & had an amazing time; obviously not all activities were running because of the pandemic but given the circumstances, the hotel did a really good job with implementing rules to reduce the spread of the virus (there were no new infections the whole time I was there). We stayed in the West Virginia Wing & got to tour the bunker, it was so cool! An absolutely beautiful place - I hope to go back! Thank you for making this video, this is one of my favorite UA-cam channels!

The bunker was designed with the idea that it was far enough from Washington not to be directly targeted by a nuclear missile. But can there be any doubt that the Soviets knew it was there? If so, the Greenbrier would have been at least a secondary target. I wonder if anyone ever checked the declassified KGB files to see?

How's the game? I stopped playing right around the christmas present glitch. My account might be banned because someone gave me 1000 presents, but I never did the glitch, or any glitch. I was getting annoyed about the game stuttering whenever I quick changed weapons. That, and storage space was not fun to juggle, since I'm usually a hoarder in rpg games. I'm hopeful that microsoft will overhaul the game (more than it currently is), but that'll have to wait till next year.

I thought the same thing at first, but I actually stayed at the Greenbrier in July & took the bunker tour, where I learned that by 1992 the bunker was actually already obsolete, and technically it was kind of wasting taxpayer dollars just to keep the place maintained every year & pay undercover agents to maintain it. See, by that point in time, if a missile were to be launched at Washington there would not be nearly enough time to get all of Congress out to West Virginia! The bunker was built when missiles were carried by airplanes but by then they could be launched on rockets and arrive in minutes, causing much more damage than older nukes. There was quite literally no way the Greenbrier bunker would have been of any use by that point, and i think that was part of the point Ted Gup was trying to make - he wanted to expose the fact that tax dollars were likely going to waste there. I guess you could argue that no bunker could really protect all of Congress now if anything were to happen 🤷‍♀️ but if there is a new bunker...it’s probably closer to Washington!

While attending law school at Washington & Lee University in South West Virginia, I participated in a clinic assisting inmates at the Alderson Federal Prison Camp for Women. The prison was located about 15 minutes from the Greenbrier. Three law students would visit the prison each week, working out to each student making 5 trips a semester. During my last trip to Alderson, my fellow students and I decided to stop by the Greenbrier for tea. It was an incredibly beautiful place. Most of the inmates I encountered were there because of drug crimes and did not come from particularly privileged backgrounds. But at least one of the inmates I assisted had family stay at the Greenbrier while visiting her. There certainly were inmates that did come from more affluent backgrounds. She was after my time, but Martha Stewart is probably the most (in)famous former resident of the prison and I would guess many if not most of her visitors stayed there. There would have almost been something poetic about placing the seat of government right next to a prison. But as the prison serves only women and most of Congress is still made up of men the rhyme falters a bit.

@15:35 And the reporter was not charged with treason, because "the public has a right to know!" They weren't too bothered by that in the days before and during the D-Day invasion, if a reporter that leaked plans would be shoot under the same charge.

In the same vein, the Diefenbunker - Canada's similar bunker outside Ottawa - might make for an interesting story. I can vouch that it was a fun and interesting, if a bit quirky, tour.

Hey I would like to see a Geographics video about the Ellora Caves in Maharashtra, India!
I visited the temples and caves recently and was absolutely astounded. Unfortunately I didn’t have a guide so it was just me and my yoga teacher walking around.. but please do a deep dive into it!
If I remember correctly, it was built over 400 years (out of a friggin granite mountain!) and included work and design from the Indian Hindus, Islamic Moguls, the Jains, Buddhists... and was actually something the Moguls didn’t destroy but further helped to create.

    • @brolohalflemming7042

That's the idea. Post-Apocalypse, America begins to rebuild. If anyone asks where Congress is, the answer obviously is 'Classified'. At least for say, 90 days, then it's 'Oh, did anyone check if someone let them out?"

Essentially sacrifice the entire population, but make sure that congress escapes to their bunker and survives. That way they can continue to "lead" all the dead people who had been obliterated by the nuclear war.

There was rumor of Cass Scenic Railroad to buy the Amtrak rail line going passed the Greenbrier, then again I wouldn't be surprised if West Virginia were to place it under official Historic Preservation so they could do that. If this plan does follow through, that would bring in tones of caps-... Er, I mean... Tourism dollars to the area connecting the entire Valley with steam locomotives from the Greenbrier to Elkins, WV. They could go crazy with it and connect the ski resorts all along the mountains too.
That's of course if someone doesn't nuke it for XP grinding and legendary hunting...

0:35 Hokay, so basically we got China, France, India, Israel, Pakistan, Russia, North Korea, the UK, and us, with nukes. We've got about 2,600 more than anybody else, whatever.
8:43 The Interstate Highway System would probably make a great video for Megaprojects. The story is much more in-depth and involves the Autobahn (another great idea for Megaprojects) and a cross-country trip in the 1910s.

When Bethesda destroyed their reputation and the Fallout series by releasing Fo76 I was watching a ton of videos about it and people playing it and lots of them ended up at this location.
Very interested to see the real deal. Spoiler for the game, everyones dead. For the first time ever no survivors. The Greenbrier did make it, and is maintained by robots.
