I'm a liscensed cosmetologist and product owner and what you are saying has validity. I was a huge proponent of trimming every 3 to 4 months but now i have been changing my stance to more of a search and destroy method and trimming the actual splits. People are so focused on having blunt ends and many times it can make the hair look better for particular styles BUT tampered ends doesn't necessarily mean damage or split ends. Tapered ends are absolutely fine and just as beautiful. Many beat themselves up if their ends aren't blunt. I'm heat trained and I use heat every 2 weeks. I have been retaining length with trims over the last 2 years with trims every 4 months. I'm thinking of changing to every 6 month to a year with monthly search and destroy.

I'm thinking (just my opinion) each follicle grows at different rates also many different factors affect our length, for me I sleep on my left more frequently and that side is shorter, even when i was relaxed, that side was stubborn therefore many factors are to be taken into consideration. Blunt ends aren't naturally akin to curly hair. You made a lot of great points thats most shy away from generally.

    • @PlusVK22
      @PlusVK22 9 місяців тому +10

They don't necessarily need to be cut even if they do. Hair naturally has some split ends. Indigenous Strandz has healthy, full knee length hair and she never trims and she said having a few splits is just a part of life....... People obsess over splits like an ocd nervous tick. Just moisturize everyday and stop obsessing and nit picking splits. Our culture never trimmed before being enslaved.... Most of us never even heard of it or adapted it culturally until the ivory people said to...

    • @esthertjones
      @esthertjones 9 місяців тому

I don't think you can say that people from the entire continent never trimmed their hair, esp. when we look at historical photos where some of the men have shorter but still elaborate hairstyles, which you must cut to maintain the shape of. However the reason for cutting may have been much different. But as long as the hair is healthy, a couple splits here and there won't damage it. And you can always do search and destroy to get splits and knots individually instead of cutting a whole lot at once. 😊@@PlusVK22

I’m from the old school UA-cam natural hair community (my primary channel) from 2013. It was a conversation back then too. The ends are only supposed to be trimmed if they are split, which happens from over manipulation, combing/heating, etc.. I noticed some newer hair channels teaching things that seem a little off.

Learning and watching this makes me so upset for the two times I basically “big chopped” after hairstylists said to cut it as the hair was “damaged” - in 2018 when I had bra strap length hair and then again in 2022- I kept wondering, if my hair was so damaged, why was I able to keep growing and retaining such length🥲 after another chop in 2022, I stopped going to stylists! My mum kindly helps me with my hair and it’s grown back out- I’ve taken hair vitamins on and off for years, I continue to have a hair care routine and I’ll just keep growing it out, only cutting any particular single strand knots, as and when😅
I started following ladies with the same texture as me (like yourself) and I know my hair is absolutely fine🙂 what beautiful hair texture we are blessed with 🙂🥳
Thank you for sharing your wisdom !

God knows what He is doing is we care for our hair we dont need cut and even when i say this there are times i go back to that feel that i need to see blunt ots been told to us ao long... its so untrue our hair does what it wants no hair care should tell us we need accept who we are ..im back on a healthy journey we need accept ourselves God made us .. mindset is key

New subscriber! Thanks for the information. I have the same beliefs. When I trim, it's a minute amount (the very ends). My hair is curly and healthy. I felt like a complete fool when I went natural years ago (without any social influence), and discovered my hair was "Jeri Curl" curly when I had a "Jeri Curl" chemical process installed in my hair many years before). The LORD has blessed me with the hair type and texture he wanted me to have. I now KNOW my hair is beautiful.

I have not trimmed mine in almost 7 years. I met a woman on the onset of my journey and she said if I used the right products and stayed far away from the commercialized products and used the LO.C. method, trims would not be necessary. She was right. I have not had split ends since that first chop. She also told me I do not have to wash it every week. I have gone as long as 4 months with no washing with soaps or co-washes. I just wet it with warm water and put the L.O.C method in play and do a deep condition. Also eat and drink well and massage my scalp every 2-3 days.

This really depends on genetics and hair practices. Because you’re right. Some ppl’s hair, especially if left alone and treated delicately, won’t need trims. But with all of the manipulation and heat styling, it’s like trims are a must or the damage would split up your hair and eventually even more would need to be cut off.
I do think some hair trim rules go against kinky hair. Just because your hair feels “rough” doesn’t mean it’s damaged. Roughness is a type of natural hair texture. Also just because it’s uneven doesn’t mean you need a trim. Almost no one’s hair grows at the same rate on every part of their head. You just gotta do what works for you. Trimming isn’t needed for everyone.

I don't have 4c hair, but hope it's okay for me to comment. First off, your hair is gorgeous.❤ Your video helped me out so much though. I have wavy hair, but I have had different people comment on my hair. I had struggled with comparing my hair to people with stick straight hair with this perfect blunt bottom. And I got to a point where I would trim my hair obsessively feeling like it looked unhealthy. In the past I would try to just take care of it and let it grow. Your video reminded me I could just trust my hair to just grow and stop obsessing over it. So thank you. Your video had showed up on my newsfeed. Btw your husband is a keeper reminding you of that. Thank you for sharing this video.
    God bless you❤

Man, that style is so cute! You are speaking truth. I feel like this is the case for type 4 hair period. I'm 4b only slightly looser texture and face the same is with my ends looking like they need to be cut (according to current social standards) but are just fine. My hair just naturally grows uneven, always has. I'd never gain any length if i just focused on keeping it perfectly blunt.

The hair stylist cut off almost all my hair, which never grew back. I hated l ever took her advice. Not knowing that after menopause, hair doesn't grow well or at all for most women. Wished l would have not taken their advice as you did. Listened but not followed.

I've been natural for 4 1/2 years and I used to cut off 1/2 inch or more from my ends every 2 months. I thought the frequent trims were needed to prevent damage to the rest of my hair.
However, the past 4 months I haven't trimmed my ends at all. Yet, I noticed my 4C hair still looks healthy, and is growing (getting thicker and more length) regardless. But, if my ends start looking too thin or straggly, that's the only time I will at least just lightly dust them, try a deep conditioner, and protein treatment instead. I rarely use protein so I guess it wouldn't hurt to try that before I start chopping off my ends again.
In any case, I enjoyed your video and I agree the ends of our hair do not have to be trimmed if not needed.
You just gained a new sub! s

I think it is only Black American stylists (some) who have promoted this “ideal” of constantly having to trim or being on a schedule of trimming. If you take a look at other cultures where the people are descendants of Africans, for example Brazil, they do not accept this same ideology. They have glorious manes of hair that move where strands are not the same length. Same as mine. My stylist is an Afro-Latina of Cuban descent and she understands the assignment each and every time with color, cut, style. She is not a proponent of trimming, unless it is necessary. SN: I use a detangling brush, other than that I use my hands only when working with my hair.

I wish I saw this video a month, even a week ago! Just went to a "stylist" this past weekend and though I knew there were some splits in my hair, she ended up cutting so much from my nape and the rest that basically deleted 2.5 months of growth and I don't grow hair quickly in the first place. I had only done knotless braids myself and clip ins since the last trim in March so my hair was always put away. But she claims I didn't do them right (been braiding my hair for 7 yrs now) or that I have to come to her to eliminate any chance for error and ended up arguing with me about it when I don't know what's in her products anyway nor do I have the time or money to do that being in grad school. Mind you every time I wash my hair, it's virtually no real shedding and very limited breakage so either she was scissor happy, felt my "uneven" ends were indicative of splits, or she didn't cut enough the last time like she claimed she did so the splits traveled up. Regardless, the hair's gone and now I know better, trust yourself ladies!

Just because your able to retain more length from not trimming doesn't mean your ends are healthy and don't have spit ends. I grew my hair down my back without getting trims but 3 yrs in I decided to get a blowout and seen how bad my ends looked it wasn't worth it to have length over healthy so decided to trim them and continue to now. I hate the whole health over length thing. Its keeping black women bald. You could take your last breath this afternoon and it won't matter how healthy your hair was no one is going to put that in your obituary. Hair does not contribute to the health of the rest of your body it does not feed the body. its just mostly used as a means of expression. Length over health for me! God gave us our hair as a covering. Long hair is a feminie thing. people only see "bad ends" when the nature of the hair is altered through means that have been invented that are not 100% harmless. To think that we could've all been running around from childhood with our longs locs and tresses with out a curly kinky care in the world not even knowing we had "bad Ends" if the european society hadn't made us stretch them out to look at them. We would have long hair and never even even think twice about our ends.

I appreciate your comment but have you ever thought that it MAY be possible that some (additional) damage could be unintentionally caused by the hair being manipulated via the styling process caused by the hairdresser (assuming that you got it done by a hairdresser). There’s the combing out and detangling part, the round brush, comb attachment blow dryer and flat irons. It’s A LOT of manipulation in one sitting and perhaps all that damage wasn’t there until after they were done with styling your hair. I’ve had several experiences by several hairdressers where a worryingly amount of my hair was on their floor and I could hear my hair snapping and breaking throughout. 4c hair has lots of bends and coils so combs etc especially when handled roughly could be very damaging. That was years ago and I had major set backs then. Since then, I’ve being doing my own hair; no combs, just shampoo, conditioner, occasional protein treatment, leave in conditioner and jojoba oil in two strand twists and my hair is the longest and fullest it’s ever been which is now approaching waist length at the back and collarbone length at the front. One thing I have found very interesting is that I get a considerable amount of tangling about 4 inches from the ends of my hair. I literally have to pull each single strand out of the tangle of strands to preserve my length. At the end of all that I always without fail find that the culprit for that tangly mess was ONE single strand that had a knot, which tangled the neighbouring strands. HAD I PUT A COMB THROUGH THAT YOU BEST BELIEVE THAT ALL THOSE STRANDS WOULD’VE BROKEN OFF. I know no hairdresser has time to be pulling out strands one at a time. That’s why I strongly believe whenever we see images of blown out/ straightened hair that is see through, I think it’s because a comb ripped it all out. It took me about two years to mentally adjust to caring for my hair in a completely different way. A lot of unlearning had to be done. Wishing you the very best in your journey! ✨💖

I ask all licensed stylist these questions in sincerity. Why do you take our textured hair out of its natural element by way of heat and mechanical or chemical manipulations (that in essence breaks down the hair strands) to determine if natural the coiled textured hair is healthy? Why do they diagnose and treat “our” hair according to the knowledge obtained from curricula that is based on the Caucasian, Asian, Indian etc textured hair? Stylists take our hair through stress by cutting, applying chemicals and heat for it to shine, be bouncy and even at the ends and to look like what white asian and or Indian hair texture looks because they are taught. It’s so the opposite of what our natural hair presents. Help me to understand.

Of course, the stylist claimed she had to trim it, I trusted her and allowed her to do it, and I was infuriated that half my length was gone😡. It literally felt like I was starting all over. Now, I did go to her again, which you may think that's crazy, but I kind of feel sorry for these "professionals" who are taught a certain way and believe certain practices pertaining to black hair. The two more times I went to her, I avoided cutting. She was trying to tell me it needed trimming, even the young teenage girl there whispered to her mother why I didn't get it trimmed. I haven't worn anything to bed in months and the back and nape of my hair has grown about 4 inches and is beginning to go down my back finally. I also don't believe we should be doing styles that create to much tension like constantly retwisting locs, high sleek ponytails and tight braids. Its creating traction alopecia. And our hair grows up then out and then as it gets heavier it hangs down, other cultures their hair just grows up and then downward. Another thing stylist don't mention is that the hair grows at different rates throughout your hair so it will NEVER be %100 even lol. And for me my sides grows faster then my crown so it gives me a wolf/heart shape.

I feel 3/4" to be too much for 6-8 weeks. I find there was some misconception cause I was recommended 6-8 weeks too and only later learned that that was to MAINTAIN a hair CUT'S length and shape cause by that time it would have noticeably grown out of it(esp a shorter cut). Not because the strands had split or to aid in length retention, it was to keep the hair looking the exact same way. And somehow that transferred to the natural hair community and so many of us trying to grow hair unfortunately follow that. I started with 8 weeks in between then 9 weeks and so on, and I found 8 weeks to be my sweet spot when I had no slit strands and and few ssknots. When I maintained that I honestly cut about 1/8" cause it's so healthy😂. It got me cocky sometimes and I skipped several months in between cause i thought I need it anymore more. I would end up cutting 2-3" in one session meanwhile If I'm on schedule my dusting for the whole year totals around 1.5" in length. But others go longer without. @@81Xx_demonwhisperer_xX18 Lol. I try to view it by a month timeline. I thread my hair up so that it can stay "maintained". By mid month, I take it down, oil it back up and then thread it back. By the end of the month, I'll take a Friday or Saturday and dedicate that time for hair care. detangling while the shower is running was a huge game-changer for me. I shampoo with a homemade shampoo bar. Thread it back up. Repeat.

@@preciousfroit has been extraordinarily difficult for me. I've been natural since 08. I have struggled this entire time. I've constantly cut my hair because I thought It was bad ends. It literally isn't. I really thank you for saying what I really needed to hear. I am going to step away for a little and get braids so I can regroup. But I definitely feel so relieved now. I feel seen thanks to you.

THANK you for talking about coily hair naturally twisting and coiling around itself. I despise that people have been saying it’s not supposed to coil or make fairy knots. My hair makes fairy knots for protection of the shaft not because it’s bad

What I learned through going through my own natural hair journey is that if I’m taking care of my hair (finger detangling, moisturizing my end, drinking a lot of water) then I don’t need to cut my end. The only time I cut my ends is when i leave my hair in cornrows for a long period of time or if I see split ends . My hair is now to the middle of my back now.

I have 4C hair. I only trim my hair when I see split ends (I cut the splits I can see), single strand knots (I cut the knots I can see) or when I decide to straighten my hair (for aesthetic reasons only).

This is why I do my own hair because stylists are so scissor happy and want to cut my hair every 3-6 weeks (which as you said, the math ain’t mathing). I trim once a year when I do a silk press at the salon, then I dust if I notice dead ends/heat damaged

1st, you are stunning 😍 2nd, there are so many points you've made that I wholeheartedly agree with. While I believe hair needs to be trimmed, I also believe the way we manipulate it sets the tone for why and how often. The more you're in it, the more often you'll need a trim. I think locs show us that unmanipulated hair will flourish.
The largest part of your case that resonates is applying the Euro-standard to our natural hair. I've been natural my whole life, but it's only been the last 20yrs I've been heat-free and totally accepting of my curls. I was as addicted to my Marcel iron as many are addicted to relaxers. But, I've also had my whole life to "get" my hair. I think, subconsciously, many are still trying to make their hair "do" what their relaxed hair did. Hence the 50step wash routines, endless search for the best curl definer, all kinds of tricks to encourage the hair to lay "down" instead of "up" like it wants to. The whole obsession w length and curl definition, to me, is an extension of the Euro-standard.
I had hair down my back most of my life and many don't understand why I keep it short on purpose. To me, there something is wrong w that mindset. Why can't I have beautiful short natural hair? But that's another topic! Loved the video 💕💚

Thank you for sharing all of that and for your perspective. I agree that locs really show what our hair is capable of which is amazing! And i agree there's absolutely NOTHING wrong with short hair. I personally am someone who always wanted long hair all my life and didn't know HOW to grow it. I wouldn't be surprised if after another decade of this i switch to like a Halle Berry look lol!

The Black hair stylists are responsible for that trimming BS. They will almost fight you if you refuse to let them cut your hair. They are almost all scissor happy.

I do not take advice from people who are constantly trimming their hair then complain their hair is stuck at their neck. 😂😂😂. I stopped going to happy scissors hairdressers over 20 years ago. If my hair become raggety, I do not trim it because it ain't necessary. I treat it and it heals itself. I know my hair. I am sure most of our mothers or nans did not trim their hair.

What they want us to do is keep cutting until it's the same length all over then let the growth begin and if one side grows faster than the other, they'll trim that again....😅.

I totally agree w/you. I never trim my hair and it retains just fine. I’m near waist length also and I’m 4c natural. Your hair looks nice and thick. Edit: I’m a straight hair natural- so I also use heat regularly and retain too.
