WW2 was 80 years ago but if you ever have visited some of these ships it’s still amazing to see what technology they did have. Imagine being a kid on some rural farm and then being assigned to a ship with sonar, radar, and fire control computers (analog of course) it would have seemed like a spaceship. The technological jump from WW1 to WW2 is astounding. And even the jump in technology from the start of the war to the end is mind boggling.

It's just one of those things the movie largely overlooked, destroyers were very seldom targeted once the "hunt" was on, a destroyer on the prowl and sonar manned will hear and see the torpedo coming long before impact.
A potential problem would have been Uboats targeting unsuspecting destroyers and then simply picking apart convoys.
But the issue with that is the destroyers would have spotted a Uboat getting into position on radar long before it dove to periscope depth to lay in wait.
In addition, the German Torpedo Data Computer couldn't handle multiple targets at once such as those on U.S subs, which would have been a nie on indispensable tool in exactly such scenarios!

15:20 - I wouldn't call it automation. DDs were not crewed by 1 man nor was 1 man responsible for every station. That is crew updates, as it should be. Something I wish more simulation style games would consider.
Them: Let's model every station with uber realism!
Also them: Let's have the player do the job of a full 10 man crew!

    • @Deltarious
      @Deltarious Рік тому +18

Yeah the ideal in my book is to have the stations all modelled as accurately as they can be with crew that performs tasks as realistically as possible too- the hard part is making their interactions as seamless and granular as they should be in reality, things such as working with other AI crewmen and being able to carry out 'general' or 'standing' orders without specifically laying out what they need to do, without it feeling very artificial and 'pre programmed' is quite difficult, but we're probably at the point now where coding such things is feasible, if not very difficult. Of course I also want me 'let the player do the job of a 10 man crew' as an option available too for fun reasons, maybe that's an optional 'hardcore' mode

AI is difficult to 'get right' and even major developers have seemingly giving up on it. Think of DCS and ARMA: 20 years of development, popular sims, still releasing new content, pretty terrible AI. As a long time sim enthusiast, it's just depressing and I don't see any signs of improvement.
Sadly, a small dev team, probably without any long-term support planed, isn't going to change this.

@@fonesrphunny7242 Writing good AI is really hard.
Training AI means the AI will go for what you measure, not what you want.
Example: have a 6 legged bot (shorter upper leg, long lower leg) walk with minimum foot contact to the surface. They will jump, they may balance on one leg while jumping …
But some will find a way to move without any foot-surface contact at all: say, flip over and walk on their upper leg joints to the lower legs which stay in the air at all times.
It is minimising exactly what you told it to minimise …

The Fletchers had a horrendous turning circle (something like 950 yards at 30 knots vs 350 yards at 20 knots for a Cannon-class DE) so I can see why trying to maneuver into a perfect position to drop DCs on a maneuvering U-boat would be incredibly difficult.

    • @zanaduz2018
      @zanaduz2018 Рік тому +3

Not being entirely fair with that comparison: a ship travelling quickly will naturally have much wider turning radii than the same ship at slower speeds.
That being said, Fletchers did have quite wide turning circles due to the single (somewhat small) rudder design they utilized. The US Navy rectified this somewhat with the late-war Allen M. Sumner-class DDs, but that's beyond the scope of this game...

I always have to fight the urge to not use auto-plot on these kinds of games. I mean, it's not like there isn't someone one these ships whose specific task is to do the plotting for the captain. Problem being, the plotting is kind of my favorite part. One way or another, these games make the combat workload unrealistically high because you're tasked with the job of like 5 or 6 dudes who each have their own guys working for them

Try, instead of running in tight circles, to back off and approach again from a distance.
One manoeuvre you can use is turn the ship 45° into one direction at hard rudder, then throw the rudder hard over for a 270° turn, then throw the rudder over for another 45° ... and you should be exactly where you were, just going the other direction.
And with other escorts keeping tabs on the contact, you can do that at maximum speed. Actually, while they keep you updated on the sub's position, you can attack them from maximum speed, giving them little time to evade, and as your ASDIC won't work --- and the sub knows that --- the sub might think you don't know where they are. Or the other way around, make sure your ASDIC is not pinging the boat and slowly make your way to it based on the reports from the escorts ... then unload on them. Or do that switching between the escort and you attacking the sub.
Oh, and if you have a radar contact, it may be a good idea to turn so all your turrets can throw shells at them, and use illumination rounds only after you lost radar contact. More shells incoming equals larger chance of one of them ruining the sub commander's day --- or what is left of him.

In theory there would be situations like this. With long time pauses between actions and ponderating actions to predict where and what enemy will do in an hypothetical space engagement.
It's important to understand that with current technologies war in space is possible but at the same time it will be looking like a long kind of naval engagement.
Due to long distances weapons like rockets and missiles powered by chemical thrusters will have relatively short range. While kinetic weapons, even if still based on chemical elements would have a more longest range.
Weapons like lasers, despite we have that kind of technology, would have little to no power to cover those long distances that there are in space without seeing a loss of power of the laser beam.
So I guess that an initial engagement will start with the recognition of the enemy, then the occupation of a proper orbit that will bring both ships in contact (eventually, if the enemy will not try to avoid the contact) and then the engagement by itself will start with an initial exchange of long range shells. Like in old battleships battles. Kinda like Battle of Jutland.
With ships that equal the speed and direction to be able to exchange shoots.
Of course here it changes a lot the effectiveness of the battle due to the technology used.
In case of just guns with tracking devices there would be some chances to hit the enemy ship, but these are not that high.
Interestingly we Italians have developed a gun that have laser-guided shells that suits really well this situation. Indeed, if you shoot a salvo that can hit the enemy because the shells themselves are guided to the target, that would be excellent.
But in case such technology is not available the distance between ships will be reduced to increase the chance to hit the target.
So at that point the exchange of fire will involve eventually also lasers and missiles if present.
Lasers eventually can easily destroy sensible hardware of the enemy ship. If, for example, your ship is able to hit enemy thrusters or sensor arrays, that's a win. Total. Because enemy will not have the time to repair or return home to repair or again counterattack. So they will be in your hands.
I guess that this will soon or later also push for a better development of hulls and defenses. Also for the design of the ships in order to give the enemy less chances as possible to hit critical systems.
At close range, it's reasonable to assume that both ships will mutually destroy themselves, so both crews will try to avoid close quarters combats. Also because there's also the dangerous situation of being forced to ram the enemy causing fatal damages to both ships and resulting in the destruction of both. So it's highly reasonable to assume that no one wants to reach close distances.
But in the case when one of the two ships in medium range engagement will try to leave, that's the perfect moment to hit and win the battle since the ship that leaves must show its main thruster to the enemy (if ship configuration is shaped around current technological design with backward thrusters and forward weaponry). As I said, if you cripple their chance to move, then you can maneuver around them and avoid their weapons while you can still attack. It's a win situation.
Yeah space combat engagements looks theorically a real trouble. 🤔
I wonder what kind of navigation system we could use on these ships... we can use GPS using Earth as reference point for navigation... but if we are not around Earth, that will be a trouble. So we need better navigation systems. Not to mention also sensors. Radars are a capital asset to have on the ship, but I guess that the other necessary equipment will be a range of thermal sensors around the whole ship. Except maybe in the backward where thrusters will turn those sensors useless. So that's another blind spot. Engagements could start considering this idea and see ships trying to reach a position behind their targets to avoid tracking and have surprise effect on enemy or just avoid tracking from enemy on board weaponry. Like in conventional sea engagements, positioning will be an essential element to win a battle. 🤔
I just imagine that the command center of a spaceship will look like that Fletcher-class tactical bridge.
Analysis of data in space will be another essential element to win the battle. So its reasonable to think there will be powerful mainframes on the ships for that purpose and also to carry the ship with a small crew. Unless you're not fighting around Earth, in space combat there are pretty much no escape pods able to keep you alive long enough to be rescued. Small amounts of breathable air against the longest distances the rescues have to cover to get the safe boat means that every survivor will probably die in space.
So it's kinda probable that if a space battle ends with a clear winners and losers, the winners will carry home the losers and take them into custody until the war ends. Prisoners of war essentially.
That will be more human than leave people stuck in space to die for the impossibility to recover them.
It's probable that eventual future war laws conventions about space warfare will impose this kind of actions to all victorious ships against enemy losing ships.
That would be probably ignored only in the case the winning ship is also in danger of survival, so they will be probably excused and excluded by the obligation of rescue the enemy crew and return strictly back to their base. 😑
War is war... even in space...

I think you're firing off the depth charges too early - after your boat passes over the sub sonar enters a dead zone, but you have to trust your course and throw the charges right in front of the sub, not right on it since it the sub passes by before they blow up

Digging the Destroyer gameplay big 🐕; moarrrrrr
I can chase down the u-boats relatively well but I just sh!t the bed when I get over top of them. I just can't hit them with the depth charges. I've played a full hour game and then like a half hour partial game and only maybe hit one a couple times (no kills).
I know how to read the sonar TRR correctly too (did the tutorial and sank the u-boat with my first DC deployment). I just have no idea what to do, or how to time the charges, when I'm right over or very near the enemy.

What will happen when CAS will arrive? Instant victory or there really will be planes flying around and literally carpet bombing those submarines? Because they arrived and, well, 'we're gonna patrol ahead of convoy' and that's all.

    • @advorak8529
      @advorak8529 Рік тому +1

No, they will just have a better time spotting the target. In the real world, the clear Pacific in calm and bright conditions allowed Japanese planes to see US subs at up to 50m (150 ft) submerged. The Atlantic is better for submarines.
If you are lucky, the aerial support will have a few depth charges, and rockets and guns against surfaced subs.
In the real world, after mid-1943, you could encounter them having a Mark 24 mine (anti-sub passive acoustic homing torpedo) and/or, if they are multi-crew planes, they might have passive, omnidirectional sonobuoys (6 independent radio channels) with an operator switching between the buoys and working on volume. Hunter-killer groups, built around an escort carrier ("normal" carrier, just "slow) and escorts, e.g. DDs, DEs ... used both in combination with good effects.
