The reason SA wore the hyper jade kit is because in rugby, unlike football, the away team wears their home jersey if there's a clash. Goes back to the days of touring by ship where it was easier for the home country to secure different jerseys than the travelling team.
Fairly certain, regarding the kit selection, it's a tradition between Ireland and SA that whoever is playing at home plays in their away jersey as a gesture to the travelling team. Heard this from an Irish lad at Newlands many yrs back
