"He’s Aaron Judge for crying out loud! A sub-.200 batting average can only last for so long, right?
Judge hasn’t looked like himself throughout this series against the Blue Jays. Not this entire season thus far, a red flag with the layoff he had during spring training after dealing with an abdomen injury.
When it mattered most on Wednesday night in Toronto, however, he came up clutch, helping the Yankees stave off a sweep at the hands of their division rival.
A two-run single down the line in left field with two outs in the top of the ninth - after the Yankees had rallied for two runs to tie the score - was the game-winning knock in a 6-4 win.
Judge was batting .171 on the year when he stepped up to the plate in the ninth with the game on the line. He was hitless with seven strikeouts to begin the series.
Earlier in that inning, designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton launched a colossal home run to left field. A few batters later, after a double from left fielder Alex Verdugo put runners on second and third, catcher Jose Trevino tied the score with a pinch-hit single.
With a two-run cushion, closer Clay Holmes shut the door in the bottom half of the frame, recording his seventh save of the young season. The Blue Jays had the tying run at the plate, but shortstop Anthony Volpe made a spectacular play to end the game, robbing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of an RBI single up the middle.
Juan Soto played a pivotal role in the win as well. He was 3-for-3 with a booming home run, a double and two walks. One of those free passes came right before Judge’s decisive hit, passing the baton … something the Yankees had been suddenly struggling to do during this series in Toronto.
Judge’s single down the line came on a full-count pitch from Blue Jays left-hander Tim Mayza, plating both Verdugo and Trevino.
With Wednesday’s win, the Yankees halted their three-game losing streak, a stretch that dates back to the series finale against the Guardians in Cleveland over the weekend. They are now 13-6 on the season, still in first place in the American League East." - Max Goodman NJ.COM
