    Ok, y'all! Thank you for the feedback. We have learned two things from this one: 1. Shoot C-RAW to save space on stills. 2. Overheating is OVER thanks to the new firmware update. Honestly PRAISE. Thank you all 🙏

    I was a Sony shooter. On the day when I was traveling to my trusted camera shop to trade in my Sony a7III for a7IV, I was surprised that I did not feel excited at all. Then the camera shop staff allowed me to test a Canon R5 with RF 70-200 f2.8 and my mind was blown away! The ergonomic of the R5, and the images it produced with the RF 70-200 were magical. I bought the Canon combo and was smiling all the way home. I have the Canon R5 for 6 months and I am still very happy with it.

    Why don't you shoot in Lossless Compressed RAW? You lose nothing and the raw files are 15-25MB in size. Been using this for weddings, portraits and low light. Never had any problems with loss of resolution.

    Not sure I get the use of one shot auto focus mode. I have an R5. I use dual back button focusing and I remove the auto focus function from the shutter button. I find that servo mode functions exactly like one shot if you grab focus with the back button and release it. I have one back button set to servo using spot mode, and one back button set to servo and eye tracking.
    Also, have owned the R6 and now the R5. I prefer the R5 by a good margin. I like the higher resolution for cropping. I like that you can set it up to instantly go from photos and to video and back with a single button press. I like the extra ruggedness and weather sealing, like that you can save 3 still and video set ups. I like the voice memo feature. The overheating is a non issue now with the formware updates, although this may apply equally to the R6? To me, the R5 is a superior camera, and I am fortunate that I can afford it.

    Hi Zach, I understand this camera puts out large files, however, can I deliver my photos in a lesser size. I take real estate photos and sometimes send 50 images. Large files for take forever for the end user to down.

    I love everything about my R5 but I’m dirty on canon. Releasing their new 24mm 1.8 at some insane price point for a very poor quality lens just knocked my socks off… the white lens hoods on the teles annoyed me like crazy I sold it. I dunno just love the Fuji film simulations so much I spend more time shooting with that these days. Just wish RF lenses would be lighter my 50 1.2 is great but at almost 1KG it’s ridiculous and I wouldn’t say it’s fast to focus because it’s moving so much glass. I don’t ever want to sell my R5 because I want the right lenses to come along but right now it’s lacklustre to me personally. I shoot in jpeg a lot with the canon and get great results.

    Curious about why you choose face tracking over eye auto focus as a secondary mode. I completely agree that it can and does choose the wrong thing as subject. I have yet to decide on the perfect set up but your video inspired me to get back to experimenting. I do find this mirrorless to struggle with locking onto focus at times that dslr would have had no problem. Sometimes I have to focus on something more contrasty to get it to focus then go back to my intended subject. It's the new focus recompose of mirrorless.

    • @TheZachMendez
      @TheZachMendez  Рік тому

      I use face + eye tracking. It is the best method I have found so far. I do agree that sometimes with single point I have to find an area of contrast for the camera to focus. Thanks for watching!

    SHOULD'VE RETURNED IT! Ha..Just kidding. Happy it worked out for you and your workflow! Personally, I found the entire camera to be A++ EXCEPT for the sensor. For me, it lacked the magic of the ol' Canons of yore. Try C-Raw. I used it at a couple of events. 18-25MB Raw files.

    Have you updated your R5 to firmware v1.6 yet? That can help significantly on overheating. For some video modes you may double your record time and others it can almost make it unlimited. I would highly recommend updating to v1.6 if you haven't already done so.
    On the file sizes, I used compressed RAW for the format. I have used both and I can't say I see a difference in the quality of the files doing so. It will save you some space. You might try and compare, if you aren't shooting compressed RAW.
    I shoot volleyball and other live performances with my R5. I love the ability to crop when needed. I also have a UA-cam channel and I love the choices I have with video. I started with the R5 over the R6 because I didn't want to upgrade cameras down the road and I wanted something that could do everything I wanted today (2 years ago now) as well as what I may want to do in the future. Other than working around the overheating concerns (I haven't run into it lately since the v1.6 update) and the 30-minute record limit, I have loved everything about the camera.

    • @TheZachMendez
      @TheZachMendez  2 роки тому

      Hey! Thanks for watching & for the input! The overheating is still an issue for filming weddings even with the updated firmware. I haven't experimented enough with the compressed raw, but thanks for the tip. Appreciate it!!

    • @dadstalktech
      @dadstalktech 2 роки тому +1

      @@TheZachMendez No problem! And just to confirm, after installing v1.6 you enabled the High-Temperature mode? The firmware adds that feature but unless enabled it will not help the overheating at all. The only mode I still have the issue with is 120 fps. However, I filmed in 90-degree weather in full sun near a grill for 2+ consecutive 7:30 (the 120 fps limit per clip) before it shut down. I would consider that an extreme case since I seldom use even a single 7:30 clip, let alone multiple.

    I'm concert photographer which mostly shot with idol group (many people on stage) The best AF method is Servo and then you must set Initial AF pt set for [FACE]. When shoot just point the square box to the subject you want to focus after you half press the shutter it will automatically focus to face/eye for that subject only (imagine you have 10 people stand next each other but it will only focus on the specific person you choose accurately).

    Hi Zach, thank you for this video ... it is another learning point for me... just a clarification ... I was actually comparing both David's video (ua-cam.com/video/kZXTn1i2A14/v-deo.html) and Michael's video (ua-cam.com/video/fWpuF6tGVTc/v-deo.html). In both videos, both David and Michael have set AF-ON button with the "Metering & AF Start" with default Expand mode or spot or square etc (any mode other than face tracking) and the * button is set differently; David has chosen "Metering & AF Start", with the AF Method set to Face+Tracking under the "Info" button whereas Michael has set the * button with the "Eye Detection AF". So, my question was what would be the difference b/w these two setups, I was getting the same results with both of these setups on * button. As Michael mentioned in the video, I've set up the "DOF" button for "Direct AF method selection" and "Initial servo AF pt for face tracking" to the 2nd option under purple menu 5. I've also set up the "AF point button" (3rd button; next to the * button) to "DIAL Function" setting to choose b/w frames vs timer etc. As both David and Michel mentioned I've also set up the AF-ON with the "Metering & AF Start" with default Expand mode, but when I was setting up the * button where I've got confused, I couldn't differentiate the difference b/w both David and Michel's method.
    Now, I believe you are adding one more thing into the equation lol! I’m trying to put by head around it. Your setup is like one of the button (may be AF-ON) setup with “single shot” & “single spot” instead of expand mode or spot or square with SERVO as they explained in above videos and the * button is set with the "Eye Detection AF. Did I get it right? If so, what is the advantage of setting up in your way over David or Michael’s methods?

    Thanks for the honest video review. I see others mentioned the craw and the new firmware that helps with the overheating, so I’ll not repeat that. one thing i especially appreciate about the r5, in comparison to previous similar Canon cameras, is the increased versatility it offers. I’m a wildlife/nature tog and while the 5DM4 and 5DSR gave great images, they were just too slow and sluggish for my style of shooting. The R5 is a big improvement on that for me, plus the video options are better. The R3 is even better, but I can’t live with the resolution. I hope Canon offers the R1 up soon, and that it comes in with 45-50MP, and feels like an R3 in the hand. I see that one as my last camera buy (I’m 64 now) so I need it to bring the absolute best Canon can make. Price is the only issue. If it is too pricey than I will just get an R5M2.
