  • My new Harvest Right spare door seal just arrived and I'm almost speechless over how different it looks. So unexpected. I like the look of it. Time will tell how long it will last.
Did your new machine arrive with a seal that looks like this new one?

Before buying a freeze dryer, perhaps research to find out more about the downside of the machine; some people have problems with their machine and it's big and heavy and hard to return!
When trying to decide what to freeze dry you can start by asking why.
Start by asking yourself this question. Why are you freeze drying food? Knowing this should help you decide what you should freeze dry first.
    I'm freeze drying because:
    Just to freeze dry leftovers?
You want to make your own food for camping/backpacking?
    For if/when the SHTF?
    For a short term emergency?
You have your own garden and want to freeze dry the food?
You love Costco but don't have a family of 6?
You are good at finding the food sales but only have 1 freezer?
When you cook homemade chili just for yourself you make 10 gallons? Because you have 3 full freezers and are worried about power outages?
If I knew then what I know now, I would have freeze dried things in a different order. Or maybe not, because I started freeze drying because we had 3 full freezers, I was thinking of getting another one, and I decided I should buy a walk-in freezer instead. I started looking into walk-ins and realized they were expensive to buy (even used ones) AND expensive to own and operate. Then I found out Harvest Right was making home sized freeze dryers. One of my first thoughts was "I like Mountain House!" I have used their food for backpacking almost 45 years and we even kept some in our travel trailer, for just in case.
Freeze dried food will stay fresh for many years and be ready and waiting when you need it.
We do videos showing how we are using our Harvest Right Freeze Dryer to freeze dry food for long term storage. (We have the medium size machine that we got in August of 2017) We talk about how to load and unload the freeze dryer, how to know if the food is dry, is it better to freeze dry raw food or cooked food, and do a few taste tests. Freeze dried food is also great for prepping or just for camping and snacking!

Do you have a vid where you made the mods to improve insulation? Plexi disc, bubble wrap, seal behind the door gasket?

      @@jacollins2010 Agreed!
I think there is no chance it will have a better insulation value, though it will cover the gap at the rear of the seal. It's still just silicone, and as you said, it's smaller, The the side wall thickness was about 11mm and now it's thinner at about 8.5mm. We will still be adding the insulation around ours.

That is an interesting new design for the drum seal/gasket.

This is the one I ordered, but i have not received it yet so I don't know how it will work out. I can show it when I get it. amzn.to/3xpqvbD (Probably better than the one I cut. My old machine chamber was not exactly not round like my sister's new one:) amzn.to/3xpqvbD -There are a few choices for 12" discs on Amazon. They may also be available at local craft stores.
It will still need spacers and a little handle thing added like I did on my original one. Acrylic Disc Front - ua-cam.com/video/erH1VDqNi80/v-deo.htmlsi=9Y0Pxr1huRrx6b_6&t=367

@@SchoolReports Thank you for the info. I want to see inside my machine's drum/chamber during the run. Many don't understand how this can help someone learn about their machine, saying, "You don't need to see in there. Just leave it until it's done. Why are you looking in there?" So, your see-through insulation panel fits my desires and needs. I understand the spacers and handle. I'm looking forward to a video on the disc you've ordered, once you've received it. Thanks again.

That seems odd. I ordered this latest one from HR on March 18.
I just called HR. at 801-386-8960 and in less than 6 minutes it was ordered and payed for. (payment was online) It would have been faster but they thought I was wanting a _sealer_ instead of a _seal._ I probably should have said door gasket.

@SchoolReports, that is really weird considering I bought my FD directly from them. I even commented, that people would consider “no parts available” important information before they purchased a machine.

Great videos Dan. I have seen your pump with a hose running from the drain to off camera, and you briefly mention it once as a filter. Can you give more info on this? I am doing candy runs in a vac oven so it doesnt have a condenser to act as a cold trap. I have to drain the oil after each run, freeze it so I can strain the ice out before filtering it. I would like to know more of your filter or even if its just a gravity trap to let the water drop to a lower oil reservoir.

    • @SchoolReports
      @SchoolReports  5 місяців тому

We use rolled paper towels to filter the oil. One is a continuous flow powered system and one is a batch gravity container.
The snugly rolled paper towel filter made using a yogurt container and paper towel filters removes the suspended water very well. DIY Oil Filter - ua-cam.com/video/mI2-8MLKV9E/v-deo.htmlsi=AkxCV-KzvXZH_UJe

My very first system (Which I don't think I have any video of) was a continuous flow powered system using the yogurt container with paper towel filters.

@@debphillips4719 The machines don't _need_ the seal insulation or the door disc we add, but for us it's a useful addition because of two related things: condensation and heat transfer. First, while it's cooling, but before the vacuum pump starts, it helps with heat transfer. Second, because I often (very often!) don't get to the machine right away when it finishes, it just sit there chilling. Sometimes it waits 12 hours or more. Very chill, -40 chill. By the time I get around to it, without the front disc and seal insulation, the entire door and seal would be covered with condensation, both liquid and frozen. And then it melts and makes a mess. For people that stay right on top the the process, ready to take it out and check it the minute it beeps, all this is much less needed.

@@SchoolReports Have you given any thought to plexiglas and it being food safe? Perhaps HarvestRight’s are made specifically for them and are already food safe. Granted the heat in the FD is low like a crockpot, but it does have a heater hot enough that the trays get hot. Perhaps the better choice would be a stainless steel disk, since you really don’t need to see the food. Or for that matter an insulation cover added somehow to the outside. Then it would still insulate, be easily removed to look inside, and not be moved closer to the food like added plexiglass. I hadn’t given any thought to the HarvestRight plexiglass being food safe, assuming it was, until you brought this subject up. Lots of companies use specifically made products for the food industry. That may be the case here, because they had to get it passed by federal inspections.
