      Me either. Bought tickets for his last tour through my area. Mom got sick and I had to pass on the concert, Tom passed away about 6 months later. But, thankfully, mom was around for a couple more years...no regrets. BTW, I bought George Jones tickets and he died 4 days before the concert.

    Tom Petty said in at least one interview that he often liked to write lyrics that leave room for interpretation. It was a deliberate feature in this song. His videos also took an artistic approach and might tell a different story than the song (or no story at all). This song is a perfect example of that. "You Got Lucky" is another song that has a video that went in a completely different direction.

      I saw Tom Petty many years ago. I thought I would be one of the youngest fans there, being about 30 at the time. Wow was I wrong. You had old time Willie Nelson hippies, 70's music rockers with long hair and pony tails, and a bunch of youngins' in their teens. And to my surprise, they all knew the songs. I've been to countless concerts (including 4 Ozzfests) and this was by far the most amazing feel of any. I enjoyed it so much I travelled several hours away to catch the next show. Not just once, but twice in that same summer!

      He talked about it in some interviews over the years. It was actually a discard from a previous album he had rejected and dropped before finishing. When he was told that contractually he had to provide a new song for the greatest hits album, he wasn't happy (he didn't think greatest hits compilations should have new music because fans are buying them for the old music they know and love), so rather than take the time to start a new song from scratch, he picked this one up and finished and recorded in almost record time.

      Mike Campbell and Tom were both playing with a pick (plectorum). Both are using electric guitars, (although an acoustic track is buried in there somewhere too,) I think what term you are searching for are APPREGGIOS. Instead of strumming straight through a chord, part or all of the chord can be picked by the individual strings one a time. With a pick you can strike with different attacks sounding louder, softer, more or less aggressive. Some guitarists prefer to just play with their fingers, instead of using a pick (Mark Knopfler- Dire Straights) but it is a personal taste thing. A pick is louder, but you can change the amp settings if you just use fingers to compensate for skin instead of plastic.

    That's a great reaction, thoughtful and funny. Here's Lex painting this wonderful image of a backcountry road, for me it would be in the late evening, twilight, just hanging out. And Brad is like, no way man I'd be paranoid. Lmao. There are actually three guitars in this, left and right channel throughout the tune and they both have different textures and are doing slightly different things and then they come together at times. And then that solo that goes on through the outro is in the center channel. All three sound like picks to me, but I would say the right channel guitar does have a pretty soft attack approach. If it's not fingers, perhaps he's using a really thin pick, and at any rate it sounds like there's some pretty good drive behind it although the master volume isn't really loud. That always gives a nice warm resonance and sustain. This can be done by overdriving the master channel by turning the input channel volume up and the master volume down, or with an overdrive pedal or a combination of both. Also sounds like he's probably adding just a touch of compression and sustain with a foot pedal, which can allow for a very soft attack but still good body and resonance. Also he may have the tone control on the guitar dialed back from the treble end some which also helps.

    • @stevedahlberg8680
      @stevedahlberg8680 2 роки тому +5

      Oh yeah, and then there's pickup selection on the guitar. He's probably using the neck pickup rather than the bridge pickup and that alone will help in that direction and then if it's a humbucker pickup(s), it's going to be even more in that direction.

      I agree - picks are used her, not the fingers - but only guitar players or musicians would know this. Brad and Lex have good ears and observations - the guitar playing is muted/dampened in the rhythm playing - more subdued- which Lex noticed but didn’t have words for it.

    Petty never said what this song is about, but there are two common interpretations. It could be about Petty's divorce from his wife Jane, which happened a year before this was recorded. Another possibility is that it is about marijuana, as "Mary Jane" is slang for pot and the lyrics refer to killing the pain, which the drug is known for. Mike Campbell offered this explanation: "My take on it is it can be whatever you want it to be. A lot of people think it's a drug reference, and if that's what you want to think, it very well could be, but it could also just be a goodbye love song."

    I’m so excited for you guys that, as new guitar owners, you have a guitar frame of reference. And I’m excited that you’re excited … I see it and hear it every time Brad says “because I actually know now!” Y’all are so dear! 💗💗

    This song was always on my set list, I sang, played rhythm guitar and harmonica I guess why I like T Petty so much. Other songs of his always on my list was Swinging, Free Fallin & Billy the Kid. Your reactions are so fun, thank you ✌️

      Tom Petty will forever remind me of summer concerts outside smoking up. Tom would take breaks to get his buzz back. Such a great time singing with the whole crowd.

    His lead guitar is a major part of what make these songs so memorable

    It’s crazy that this album came out in the very end of 1994, when grunge was absolutely king, and it still sold millions of copies, and made it to 8th place on the billboard top 100.

    Tom Petty's catalog is so vast and his longevity was proven out to be genuine talent. I would offer some of his best songs were still coming out like "I should have known it" or "Saving Grace" - two fantastic songs. The official videos are both just his band in his studio jamming - you can tell how much they enjoyed playing together as the Heart Breakers!
