    The assumption that lessons learned for a road test will keep you crash-free is, unfortunately, driver education will not necessarily keep you safe.
    Driving is a dynamic task, and presents many challenges every single day. In this video, there are 10 tips & techniques that will increase your safety on the roadway:
    • observation
    • shoulder checking
    • emotional control
    • cruise control
    • left turns
    • speeding
    • vehicle controllability
    • communication
    • following distance
    • distracted driving

    11:20 - You can minimize "shoulder checking" if your mirrors are set properly.
    Unless you are driving a bus, coach, or tractor trailer, you should not see any of your own vehicle in your SIDE-view mirrors

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  2 роки тому +29

      Not shoulder checking is to driving what not checking to see if a weapon is loaded is to gun safety. Why would you change direction in a 2,000lbs+ vehicle at speed and NOT shoulder check? Shoulder checking is neither optional nor can it be minimized. See this vid for proper adjustment of mirrors: ua-cam.com/video/VTfG8Rh5JRA/v-deo.html Drop us a note if we can help further. Cheers Rick

      @@smartdrivetest Look up 'BGE' side view mirror setting method. (Blindspot/ Glare Elimination). Vastly reduces the need for glancing over shoulders in sedans, SUVs and light trucks.

      Lol, yes, I hate looking behind me. The thing I am going to hit is in front of me; I just use my mirrors to keep track of cars in or around my blind spot. Also, it throws me out of the center of my lane to twist my body around like that.

      In the areas of social driving you want to keep yourself safe. And you can put in place techniques and skills that will keep you and others safe. There are always going to be aggressive drivers, but eventually they’re going to crash. You just don’t want to be there when they do my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Good stuff. Heres a helpful tip to reduce anxiety and frustration...if you have following distance and somebody cuts you off (does a lane change right in front of you) and you get upset, just say to yourself "with my good following distance I helped that person do a safer lane change". Many of these people will cut you off even if you dont have good following distance. So why not just have good following distance? And when someone cuts you off think of it from a different perspective - a helpful perspective. This will reduce your own road rage and reduce your own distractions. And most importantly forgive others for their offensive behavior as Jesus will forgive yours.

    Love your videos!
    Things you might add are:
    People saying blinkers give them the right to change lanes whenever they want
    People driving at night with their lights off
    Knowing that semi trucks have big blind spots. Don't match speeds there. Also, they often need to make wide turns. Anticipate and don't try to cut around them.
    Insurance scammers and brake checking. Get a dash cam. Good for resolving accident faults, as the other person will try to lie their way out. Or download files and give to police to help the innocent, as a witness.
    Keep up the great work!

    Thanks for your helpful videos. When I was learning to drive in the 1960s, the rule about keeping the correct following-distance was: for every 10mph you're travelling at, keep back at least one vehicle length from the car in front of you. So that if your are driving at 50 mph, you should be at least five car-lengths back from the car in front of you. At 60mph stay six car-lengths back from the vehicle in front of you... etc.

      Hi Rosas: Thank you for your comment and congratulation on both your licence and vehicle - it is indeed an exciting time in your life. You will love your new freedom! You're going to do great! For the first few weeks, I would suggest keeping the noise level down in the car; in other words, minimize loud music, conversation, and definitely put your phone on mute. Sound is often the most distracting. But at one and the same time - enjoy driving… because it's awesome! All the best, Cheers Rick

    Advice about difficult or dangerous left turns: Obstruct Traffic!
    in a lot of cases bad left turn situations can be avoided simply by going a bit longer by making repeated right turns so as to end up on the desired route. Better than sitting at the intersection through multiple light cycles.

I'm grateful to my instructors but I feel like I'll panic a bit when the time comes to ride alone tehehe! Also, there's so much studying material here on UA-cam.

    Speaking of distracted driving, in my high school driver's ed class back in the late 1990s, before cell phones were prevalent or smartphones even existed, our classroom driver's ed instructor bragged about regularly applying her makeup, including mascara, while driving. She had some way of using the rearview mirror to do this. She always looked fine, so she was good at it.
    She didn't recommend that we as her students do this, but I found it bizarre even when I was 16 that a driving instructor would either do this much less talk about it to a group of high school students.
    I wonder if she has since mastered texting while driving & brags about this to her classes. No, I never did any of this myself, feel most of us were probably intelligent enough to know this wasn't appropriate driving behavior, but you never know...

I still watch your videos because there’s always something new to learn!😁

  • @JVerschueren
    @JVerschueren 5 років тому +5

    This video resonates with me: if there's one positive attribute to my driving, it's I'm almost unflappable at the wheel. Nothing gets me, much to the dismay of my passengers, who'll frequently pipe up with comments, like, "that guy's is going to cut in, don't let him!" and I ignore them. On rare occasions I've even gotten those guys (and they were/are invariably guys, take that as you will) to admit it was unnecessary to get upset.
    As you alluded to in another video, in start-stop driving, try to keep moving at a slow rate, play the "no stopping"-game (i.e. read traffic/traffic lights and try to avoid coming to a complete stop). It will improve your gas mileage, wear and tear on your vehicle and save you time.
    A good friend of mine drives a delivery truck, doing fixed itinenaries and he reckons, on a good day, when things work out, anticipating and playing the "no-stopping"-game, shaves 15 minutes of his working day versus just driving along and only slowing down when he really needs to.
    Also, for the people going for a CDL career, when running as just a tractor or with an empty trailer: resist the temptation of using the "zippyness" of these configurations. Because trucks can really move unloaded (they're also really tailhappy when there's no weight over their driving wheels, which may be less of an issue in the US or Canada, due to the general configuration of trucks over there).
    Heavy hoofing it in those configurations will kill your fuel economy like you wouldn't believe... it's not linear. It's not because you're light you're not able to burn a ton of fuel rushing.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 років тому +2

      Hi Jan Verschueren - Thank you for your comment and great information. When running a truck without a trailer, we call that bobtailing. And you are right - they are zippy without a trailer. Yes, if you can keep your vehicle moving - it's going to save you time. As I tell people, making more miles over the course of the day in a large vehicle is not about going faster, but maintaining a higher average speed for a longer amount of time. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Thank you so much for sharing all the vital driving tips. You are simply the best. Keep up your good work. Your video and the suggestions below have enough tips to be safe driver on the road. At the traffic signal the driver needs to exercise precaution and care - decide well in advance when the light turns to red from amber as u mentioned. Very imp. Thanks once again.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 років тому

      Hey Claudees - thank you for your kind words. It is me that owes you a thank you. In all the years I've been teaching, I'm sure no one has asked me that question about how to stay safe post driver's licence. Little doubt, it was a challenging question; I gave the question considerable thought. Even with all my knowledge, experience and ability it was a complicated response. The biggest consideration was the difference between traffic regulations, predictability and social driving. Social driving is how drivers interact on the highway mixed with certain cultural expectation. The interaction between these aspects of driving create instances that some times result in crashes. Thank you Cheers Rick

    A GREAT tip, and one almost never heard, is the one on selecting a vehicle that you as a driver can manage from the standpoint of size, maneuverability, lines of sight from the driving position etc. So often I've heard, "I want a big, heavy vehicle so that I'm protected in a crash!" That's a sham, a delusion - and a danger to others as well as yourself - if you cannot safely handle it in daily driving.

    +Smart Drive Test Hi Rick, I wanted to know if it is ok to have on my turning signals early in order to change lanes . Recently i was driving and in order to change lanes I had my signals on for about 7-8 flashes.Was that bad?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 років тому

      Hi Superb Abigail - thank you for your comment. No, 7 or 8 flashes is not bad. 3 flashes is the minimum that you want your signal on before you move to change lanes. Sometimes, if you're waiting for others to help make a gap for you, you may have to keep your signal activated for period of time before you complete the manoeuvre. But when you're turning, you don't want to activate your turn signal too early, or it may confuse other drivers - 1/2 block approximately for most turns. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    17:14 - what if both lights turn yellow, you're stuck at the intersection trying to turn but the car coming in the opposite direction isn't stopping or slowing down on their yellow light? Do you still need to clear the intersection or just let the guy speed by even if it means your light turns red?

      Best approach is; if you can, make the turn by the time the car gets to you, obviously make sure it’s safe and logical to, if you can’t. Wait until they zoom by and your light turns red, there’s usually a second or two for a delay on the other lights for situations like this, just make the left turn on red and get out as fast as possible. Hope this helps
