      @@allnyc3412 Thank you for your lovely, easy to understand videos! NY is a city of contrasts; modern high rise flats, ugly old buildings with character and charm, suburban areas, and charming old world places. I would love to live there, but you need....... lots of MONEY!!! I would soon be homeless. Even those with well- paid jobs struggle to survive. Could I live there on benefits?
      Could you do a video about the subway, unknown places, and homeless people? Please take care. PS; Their rudeness shocks me. If I were to encounter it, I would just smile sweetly and apologise!

    You had me at “the granny cart”. I forgot I ever owned one. When I lived on my own in NY I was laughed at by relatives for buying one. It turned out to be one of my wisest purchases. When I left NY and tossed it to the curb it was the first thing to be scavenged. Truly a survival tool.

      New Yorkers are intense people. Intense good and intense bad. The good thing is you always know where you stand with them. If you're a strong, healthy positive person who has a good sense of humor and doesn't take themselves too seriously you'll be fine. My native New Yorker dad always said to just "ride the wave" when out in public, don't take people or things around you too personally.

      @Nenethegreat W I couldn't afford to go to school in NY and pay living expenses so I left. I wake up every day in disbelief at how beautiful the weather is here and how good life can be. I'm an athlete, so I'm not suffering from obesity. After graduating, I more than doubled the pay I was making in NY, and my money goes alot farther in my current states economy. I'm happy your enjoying your life in NY. I was truly miserable and because I'm not complacent I decided to do something about it and enjoy the rest of my life.

    As a born-and-bred New Yorker, I take exception to the negative tone of this report. Yes, walking fast is a good tip, but several others here are off-base, notably the "tough skin" point. We have many crazies running around owing to our nation's deeply dysfunctional health system, but the vast majority of New Yorkers are compassionate and considerate. We have to be to live in such a densely packed place. I assume that the author of this video is someone rather new to the city who either isn't comfortable here or unconsciously wants to deter others from settling here so she'll have more space. In any event, tourists, visitors, and newcomers are very welcome, but please remember: slower-moving pedestrians should keep to the right!

    • @shezwaepowell9114
      @shezwaepowell9114 2 роки тому

      I agree. You can find negativity and rudeness anywhere. I don't find New Yorkers particularly rude. They are certainly more apt to talk to you and I appreciate that. I have lived in the city and the burbs and I found it a lot harder to meet people in the burbs.

  • @murdelabop
    @murdelabop 4 роки тому +13

    The single most important thing you need in New York City is money. Especially in Manhattan! Also, I have found remarkably few New Yorkers to be rude. The one cardinal sin for New Yorkers is wasting their time. Then they will get rude just long enough to get you out of their way.

    I feel like this could be adapted to any major city, I am from Ireland and travelled the world and despite its size, Dublin is becoming like a very condensed version of NYC or London: gang problems, Panhandlers and junkies everywhere, people having no time to breath, crazy expensive (worse in the Eurozone) and insane rent. So If i had put up with all that shit, I might well do in a massive world city.

    • @sams3015
      @sams3015 4 роки тому +2

      @Nenethegreat W its not so cute when you're walking down O'Connel Street and some guy comes out of no where and is looking for "2 yera for dee for der buse" (2 euros for the bus) and obviously is an addict and threathens to stab you if don't comply. You will be slaughted if you came to Dublin if you are going to sterotype people like that because you won't have the same gaurds up! A whole population can't be 'cute', infact in HiberoEnglish (our dialect), 'cute' means sneaky and you will find a lot of that here.

You better off with a backpack or carry on shopping bag preferably stylish one. Sling back pack fanny pack maybe. Don't forget a weapon self defense. None the less use your better judgement instinct. I've experienced some pretty harsh street harassment - I know many women have. I moved to NYC in winter of 2008 and experienced the street harassment even being bundled to the max. When the weather started to get nicer, and more people were out I knew I had to brace for what was coming. The street harassment will force thick skin/blinders/game face.

NYC is a fun, exciting place to live but you can't just arrive and slum around hoping it will work out. It's too expensive, too fast paced and too tough to go in not ready to take care of yourself. But if you do, you'll be fine and everywhere else will feel slow and sleepy.

    Heres 10 things YOU SHOULD KNOW from a former new yorker who lived in this $#!+hole for 26 years. Pay attention you with me?
    1. Dont move to nyc
    2. If you do move here you will eventually leave sooner or later.
    3. You will be taxed 27 to 34 % for Each paycheck you make wether you are full time, part time or per diem, NYC dont give a f-&+ who you are or how much you make you will be taxed out your tail.
    4. The Commute to the city if you live in one of the 5 boroughs is pathetic and miserable, smelly trains, homeless people, coronavirus everywhere now.
    5.MTA will charge you$ 2.75 for one way train or bus trip.
    6. If you work graveyard shifts you WILL have to deal with homeless people in the train trying to pee on you bother you etc.
    7. DO NOT DEFEND YOURSELF IF YOU GET INTO AN ALTERCATION with a perp you will go to jail and pay restitution for any damages you may have made to the perp or property, just take the beating harrassment etc, trust me it's worth it.
    8. You are being WATCHED at every train station, bus stop, bus, train, red light, etc.
    9. If you live in the 5 boroughs you WILL pay city and state tax. If you live in long island you pay state tax ONLY.
    10. If you do happen to survive and make it out here, please dont post on your social media as if you were raised here, its false, no one will care and most of all, LAME.
    Oo heres one more.
    11. When you come here and try to act all hardcore, and new yorkish , you are not fooling anyone.
    Thank you!

    First thing as aforementioned...lots of money! Lived and worked in Manhattan in the early 1970s as a professional fashion illustrator and paid only 90 dollars a month for a rent controlled one bedroom, one bath apt in an old brownstone on the Upper East Side. Today that same apt goes for $ 2500 of course! With two roommates originally we only paid 30 dollars each! Then I moved out of the city to the suburbs and paid $ 162 a month for a brand new studio apt with AC, Swimming pool and tennis courts! Goes to show you just how GREEDY people have become since then! Good luck, you'll need it and thanks for sharing ALL NYC!!

    Obviously the narrator is not from NYC. I was born in Brooklyn, lived also in Queens and worked in Manhattan for a total of 57 years. New York City is not just Manhattan. That is only 1/5 of the city. While I agree with some of this, it is what you get in a large city - any large city. In Manhattan, people work hard and they work fast. There is no time for strolling except in the parks. Eight million people create a lot of garbage. But you would have to go out of your way to really observe it except on pick up day. While some may seem "rude", live here for awhile. You will soon see it's not rudeness but survival. If you expect smiling faces and people singing, go to Disney World.

      It can and certainly will if you let it. You need to be tough, smart and prepared to live well there. If you have a decent job and a good community of healthy, positive friends you'll be fine. If you come with nothing and no one just expecting it to be good and work out you'll sink.
