    Best lesson on Ripple. Having listened to a half dozen lessons on Ripple, this one is the clear winner for me. It starts with the body of the song, rather than getting into the minutia of the intro. That way you get the gist right up front. He later fills in the intro but he teaches it from the perspective of the bluegrass form Garcia is playing out of rather than trying to nail down the exact notes. To me, this makes all the difference because as is mentioned in the video, Garcia never played the same thing twice. He was always changing things up. With this lesson there's a lot more freedom to improvise. The approach is to get the feel of the tune and in the end that's all that really matters (to me anyway). He also gives tips on keeping a relaxed feel, which is key, including the use of lite strumming. Bravo!

    Have been working on for over a year from tabs. This really brought it all together for me. Organization of lesson ensured song elements built upon one another. Made connections that I couldn’t see as a beginner. Thanks.

    Thank you for this impressing guide into ripple. I‘m not an experienced player and it was tough for me to follow. But I love this song and so it’s always fun to work on it. You kept me practicing because it seems so easy how you do it and so I try to get some of this laid back atmosphere into my play. Great job👏

    Funny thing . . I heard this in church the other day . . . . our music minister who is a great musical talent overlayed a worship tune on this progression. All the years I have been listening to rock, I never picked up on this one. I had to learn it. I got the progression figured out, but your lesson gave me some ideas for add ins. I had also figured out the melody, but I was looking for a way to incorporate it into the strumming. You covered that too. Beautiful song, and a great lesson. Thanks.

    Hi Dave, simple question, regarding the tab….what do notes in parentheses mean? Im stumped

    • @NashvilleGuitarGuru
      @NashvilleGuitarGuru  2 роки тому +1

      Notes that ring over the bar will be tied to a note in parentheses, like the open D that rings through the first measure.

    Whats the strumming pattern here

    • @NashvilleGuitarGuru
      @NashvilleGuitarGuru  4 роки тому +1

      It's basically a modified boom-chick, bass -- down-up. Think relaxed country feel with some swing.

    i'm not trying to disagree with you, but every time i've seen the Dead play this song, Garcia plays the rhythm strumming and Weir plays the lead melody. i don't recall ever seeing Garcia play this song solo.
    just sayin' :3

    • @NashvilleGuitarGuru
      @NashvilleGuitarGuru  3 роки тому +1

      You know, I hadn't even really thought about what they do live, since so much of American Beauty is different than the way they played live. But interestingly enough, check out Garcia in this one - he does seem to be playing both the melody and chords. ua-cam.com/video/5yJmBC7cMTM/v-deo.html

    Yeah, no A7 there. A.

    • @faheyfan1
      @faheyfan1 Рік тому +1

      A7 fits very well there because it really wants to resolve to a D major chord. That's the whole reason they stuck an A major chord in there even though that chord doesn't belong in the song's key (G major); it's leading us to the D chord. You could argue it's more correct to play A7 because including that 7th in the chord really emphasizes the move to D.
