Dana’s method of decluttering one item for the item you want to put in an already cluttered place, works like magic. I’ve never heard this before from any one else and it really brings progress. Like Dana says “trust the process.” My house is better off every day.

I love put-it-there-now. Before I made piles to conserve my energy. Now, I look at it as collecting steps on my watch. And running up the stairs to making the trip shorter is a fitness bonus. On a marathon declutter day I did 2 miles.

Great idea! Moving keeps you motivated, I think. An object in motion, stays in motion. You don't find yourself, distracted & bored sitting among the "sorted piles".

This has been a game changer with my kids. I give them the choice to take it there now and put it all the way away, or stick it in the donate box. The things they really like get put away, and the other stuff leaves. It's amazing.

Back in the early 80s my parents got a car with aircon and a dishwasher. We were told that the aircon made the car less efficient and therefore wasn’t going to be used often and the dishwasher was only for the occasional dinner party. Give yourself permission to use these awesome things. We lived in a hot corner of the world too.

Gotta a new decluttering concept that works for me. As I go through my cluttered basement, garage and shed, I take one thing out and get rid of it. Man, what a difference it is making. Cleaning that one area is really helpful too, especially the floor area. It takes time when it has a accumulated over several years. So proud of the difference it is making.

I like having my books on display. At the beginning of the year I had a lot of books that were stacked two deep. I decided to declutter the library. I started by picking out the ones I knew I wouldn’t read again. [I’m calling this the trash/recycle step]. I sent them off to the local little free library. I picked out the books that I hadn’t read or couldn’t remember reading. I am working on the not read ones and will either read them or pass them on unread, if they don’t hold my interest. They are on shelf of their own so I don’t come across them unread ten years from now. Because they were on my shelves for years without being read, they are unlikely to be favorites. As I read them, a final decision is made. So far, not a single one has been a keep. When I finish this step, I am going to start rereading the series I collect with the plan that if I don’t LOVE them and want to reread it again, I will let it go. I started with somewhere between 1200 and 1500 physical books on my shelves. I have close to the same number of e-books, to say I am a book lover is an understatement. My goal is to die with as few physical volumes as possible so my survivors don’t have to deal with them. I have moved out about 400-500 (was counting but lost track). By the end of this year (when I finish the unread books). I will have no books double stacked on the shelves. The only “easy things” on the shelves were misfiled books and they went to where they belong. I am calling my unread books and the series I don’t care enough to keep, my “duh, donations”. So far Dana’s method has worked for everything I’ve used it on.

Wow. I had 2500 books (I’m an English major and an author), and decluttered them in the EXACT same way you describe!! Exact!! I now have approx 500… here is what helped me the most: I decluttered my large, deep bookshelf! The entire thing, which was just enormous. Then I replaced it with 2 small bookcases that can only fit one layer of books. Try it!

Love it!!!!! I hear that you think you are over explaining there in the end. But actually some of us need that so seriously don't worry about it. Repetition is beneficial to jam it in for me.
I love that easy question "If I were looking for this where would I go?" And then have it a question abt space.
When in doubt this is often now my go to (i wish i always used it FIRST but am rather new with your method) Today I was decluttering, I had a coat and put it on and my daughter was like "this one is kind of worn" but I was "but it's long in the back like f ex if I have jeans I don't like the 'ass' of" lol. And she was "but then you have that one too, it's almost the same but nicer" pointing at a black one, and it was true. A more fancier version of similar style. Yet thinner in fabric... I was hesitating...... But then the question popped in my mind "If I were looking for this coat where...." and I just KNEW. I knew no way could I get rid of it.
I do look for that coat, it may be a bit worn but because I wear it!!!! I may not have been wearing it often recently but it's a perfect in between coat (not too cold not too warm out). Then I put it on once more and it was SO comfy which made me instantly remember that the similar one is actually a bit tight around the shoulders but this is a coat I feel comfortable driving in (driving is often key: I dont want to tear it off my back or get annoyed when I have a thicker sweater under....)
So my point is "Where would I look?" Was what did it for me. I knew I would LOOK and realized how great this coat is.
One day I may even fix the hole in the lining of the pocket making my keys get lost inside it 😆

I had two sentimental boxes as a teen and went through them fortnightly along with my whole room. It was always tidy. It was great to learn my clutter threshold and tidy habits early. I was also frugal so only what I wanted came into my room. Unfortunately living with a hoarder who hated my cleaning efforts derailed me but I’m trying to get back to my natural instincts now I have a whole home to look after.

Jerrylynn, you might have a food trigger for inflammation you could experiment and find. Like if the bad pain days are the day after you ate something. For me it was both diet soda and too much sugar or bread. A friend warned me about the artificial sweetener and I was indeed one of those people. I was left with the damage, but have not had pain or new swelling since I quit diet soda and limited sugar and bread. Those might not bother you, those were my triggers but I think they are common. I hope you feel better!

Of course, just like children cannot resist touching wet paint, those who got lots of pleasure from gift giving could not help themselves from buying stuff which brought me to mind..Then I would say, Thank you so much, it’s lovely,,,,and I know exactly who needs one of these. How thoughtful you are.” Hugggggs.

Our kids are grown up and we have 9 grandkids. The adults don't exchange gifts any more... we just enjoy being together. I give the grandkids money. That way their parents can help them decide whether to let them get a specific item or put it together with other money they may get or whether to use it for an experience. My son used the money for his 3 boys to buy a kit for an outdoor rink kit (we live in Canada) in 2020. Their family enjoyed it so much and still use it most years (last year the weather was weird). Often our kids buy something for their nieces and nephews but that is up to them.

Like it or not , I'm frustrated w/ things my husband stores in our main floor (he has 70% of the full basement for his home work studio ) . I have already dealt w/ my things and continue to rid out unnecessary household ker-ap , his stuff is what creeps into spaces I've cleaned . He has the most clothing hanging space (and the largest chest of drawers ,yet he just wants to use the laundry closet as his closet because he doesn't put his clothes away upstairs) . He also stores dimensional lumber (and a table saw) in our casual dining space . I had a knee replacement last summer and will have another right before Thanksgiving.....I wore out my knees cleaning up after my husband , my son and doing grueling yard work (that most women don't do) for 40 years . I 'm going to see if part of the lumber can find a home in the basement walkout entry . I'm trying to clean and tidy as much as possible before the next surgery ....Ask me why I'm not motivated to pull out a Christmas tree this year (husband calls me Ebenezer ) - I think arranging a some greenery and some battery powered lights on our china cabinet and perhaps a wreath is more than enough.....

If you have all of the same type of container and same type of lid, this can be even easier. The lids can live in a mesh bag, hung by the glass containers. Standardizing containers and lids, especially ones where you can buy the containers or lids separately, so you never have extra junking up the space is very helpful.

    • @Haynorie
      @Haynorie 2 місяці тому +2

I think shoes are definitely an example of why it's helpful to declutter to a specific container rather than trying to just pick your favorites. If you have a set container for shoes, you have to declutter down to what fits the container for shoes. Whether it's one of those over the door holders, a bin, or a shoe tray. Having a set container and not just a shoe corner really helps.
Then, every time you buy shoes, you come home and have to get rid of another pair of shoes to make room or return them. Over time, you will start to think while you are still looking at them in the store if there are any shoes at home you are willing to get rid of to make space for them. And often, the answer being no will keep you from buying the shoes.
