Dankeschön Rolf! I purchased a Keystep to get started with midi sequencing with a looper pedal that I have and ended up packing it back to return to the store as I could control only one volca at a time. After seeing your video I realized that I was using the transpose mode all the time so I’m motivated to give it another go!!! Great job, keep doing these videos. Hopefully you can do a nice one about the Keystep Pro for when I decide to upgrade? haha I’m sure it will help a lot of people! Cheers
Thank you Luiz! I´, happy, that I could help a bit. Concerning the keystep pro, well, I´d like to make a tutorial video about it, but I have to buy all the things I make tutorials about. Artutia doesn´t even know me, and as I wrote to them once, they didn´t even answer. And money to buy the keystep, well, that´s above my limit. Yes, that´s a quite common mistake. Enjoy your day! Rolf (and if you eventually come acros my website www.rofilm-media.net, and subscribe to my newsletter, you will not only get a free non-public tutorials, but might also get more useful information from time to time)
I have a question that I asked a lot of people and Channel on UA-cam but nobody answers me. Can we do more complex patterns than just quarter notes or eighth notes etc.? Example My measure is 1 half note, 2 eighth notes, 3 dotted eighth notes and 4 sixteenth notes. Is it possible ?
Thank you, Alexander, for commenting. It´s important for me to know, if my videos are helpful or not. By the way: there´s a lot more of this stuff at my website www.rofilm-media.net, and if you´re a bit interested in modular synthesis, you may want to know about Modular City: ua-cam.com/video/EHOPosGnfDo/v-deo.html Enjoy your day! HI! THANK YOU SO MUCH! THIS WAs VERY USEFUL. ALSO I HAVE A PROBLEM: I CAN'T CHANGE THE LENGTH OF THE SEQUENCER BY PRESSING THE REC BUTTON + NUMBER OF SEQUENCES (1-16)... DO YOU KNOW WHAT CAN BE HAPPENING? THANKS AGAIN
How can i get the keystep sequencer (slave) to be triggered via midi by the elektron model samples (master)? Have the right cables and dip switches and even tried changing settings in midi control center but no luck!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Great video. For the first time I understand how to use the rest/tie and some other features I could not find anywhere else. I have just one question: I use Volca FM (ch. 3) and Volca Keys (ch. 1). I do Shift - Oct+ and would like to leave Volca Keys playing the sequence while soloing on Volca FM (what you mentioned as a possibility). However, no matter what I do, it is always the channel I select after Kbd Play that will play both, the sequence and solo. I tried to figure out the settings in MIDI Control center and in spite of my efforts, nothing changes. What do you recommend? Thanks.
Hello Miki.the.Great! I´m afraid you cannot achieve what you want that way. The problem is, that a sequence, which is being played by the Keystep must be sent out via the CV out jack, if you want to play the keyboard live using another MIDI channel. As the Korg Volcas don´t have a CV in jack they depent on the conventional MIDI jacks/cables. Therefore: they always will play along with the MIDI channel you´ve adjusted last. To let the sequence and your live playing getting played by different devices, you need to use both, the MIDI out jack for your live playing to device 1 and the CV out jack for the sequence going to device 2. I´m going to talk about problems and set-ups like that in Modular City, which is going to be opened in April: ua-cam.com/video/EHOPosGnfDo/v-deo.html
Fantastic video. Sorry to ask more questions about the REST / TIE set up with the Volca but could you please explain what cable(s) goes from the Keystep to the Volca and from which port. Also what is the setting with the two switches on the back of the Keystep? MIDI? Or Interval? I assume, Midi. Thanks for all your help and brilliant videos.
I am learning so much from your video - thank you! Forgive if you have already mentioned this - but what is the difference on the Time Div dial between 1/4 and 1/4T?
Love your work, sir. Can't decide between a Beatstep Pro or the Keystep to drive my Neutron. I already have a Roland PC-180A Keyboard, I'm really looking for a good sequencer.
Well, first I´d like to thank you for commenting. If you´ve already got a keyboard controller, then the Beatstep pro should surely be the better decision. It´s a bit more expensive though. If you want to stay in the price segment of the Keystep, then you may consider the Korg SQ-1. I don´t know the beatstep pro in detail (I´ve only watched some youtube demos), but it seems to me, that the beatstep pro is a bit more functional than the SQ-1. If I should have to decide between the beatstep pro and the SQ-1, then the question of ratcheting would make the point. Enjoy your day! Rolf
I'm trying to find out what sequenzer I should buy, with just the options Arturia has to offer I am already overloaded and it's hard to decide, if I should get a Keystep, a beatstep or even the beatstep pro. I would love to learn what the differences are (only looking at the sequencers in these 3 products) if there are any. since nobody put out a nice comparison video so far, I will have to find tthis out by watching all videos about all three models. that'll take some time! I want to use it with a hardware synthesizer. I thank you very much for this super elaborate video! Danke und Gruss aus Bremen.
Thank you for commenting couchcamper! I understand your problem, and you are not alone with it. Unfortunately I´m in the last (and very hot) phase of publishing Modular City. There won´t be time for producing such a comparison for quite a bit of time. Rolf
Hello Pablo. I´m glas you found my video useful. Your question: you need 3.5 mm jacks. The Sync jacks must be stereo (TRS), if you want to transmit Clock pulses as well as Start/Stop signals. If you want only to transfer clock pulses, you can use mono (TS) jacks. All other jacks (Pitch, Gate, Mod) are mono (TS) jacks anyway. By the way: have you had heard of Modular City? If not and you are a bit interested in modular synthesis etc., you should invest 15 minutes and watch the following: ua-cam.com/video/MmNqERfI4qM/v-deo.html
Hello at 5:37 you are adding the chord on top of the fixed sequencer, I couldn't do it because when I press the chord the previous melody format changes, whereas I want to add it as a 2nd separate channel, is that possible?
Hi there! I love your video mate... I have a question though... Is there any way to Connect my Blue Electribe 2 to an Arturia keystep? Also I have a volca basa as well
Thank you for commenting. Concerning the Electribe, well, I don´t know this machine. But all websites say it has MIDI (the adapter being part of the deal). So you just use the MIDI input jack of the electribe, I can imagine. If you want to connect the Keystep with two MIDI sources, you´ll have to use a MIDI splitter, I think. You´ll get them on the Internet for something between 40-50 dollars (1 in and 4 or 5 outs). Enjoy your day! Rolf
You sound like a cross between Werner Herzog & Giorgo Moroder. While such a grotesque picture might instill a general sense of dread in the hearts of many, the banality of putting 4 on the floor is ultimately inevitable.
Thank you, Andy for your comment. I´m happy you like my tutorial. And, yes, I forgot to switch synths in that test. But the result is as I told in the video. Enjoy your day! Rolf
Hi , i need some help cause i use keystep in ableton like a keyboard, with usb/midi cable , and i can't use the sequencer and harp mod, can you help me please ? Thx for all
Hello Nicolas. Just to get it right: You´ve plugged your MIDI cable coming from the Keystep into a USB audio interface and this audio interface via USB to your computer. Is that the case?
@@nicolasdelliac8098 Hi Nicolas! Sorry for answering a bit later. I´ve been suffering from the flu, but it´s getting better. Well, I´ve tried to reproduce your problem, but whatever I tried, no problem occurred. I´m not working with Ableton at the moment though. I tried with FL Studio as well as with Reaper. No problems! Perhaps the MIDI channels of the sequencer and of your Ableton apps/VSTs etc. aren´t the same?
@@nicolasdelliac8098 I´m pleased to hear that! Would you like to tell us/me, what the problem was and how you solved it? Others may have the same problem. Enjoy your day! Rolf
I tried to record something. After that the sound of the synthesizer changed, not in a good way, then i tried to record this sound and while I was recording the sound went back to normal, what can be the problem? Volca keys
Sharkwhisperer I was having the same problem, you have to change the transport settings in midi control center. In my case the record button was sending a signal to eg sustain so I had to change stop, rec and play cc values. You can look for the midi implementation chart for the volca keys and make sure that the values for start cc, stop cc, and rec cc are not set to the volca control channels. Hope this helps....
My keyStep came with 8 sequences already in the eight slots. I can’t play over top of them to record new ones. I can’t record at all. Not with midi. Not with usb
I was having a problem of not getting the sequencer to work, then I realised the internal clock wasn't switched to midi. If you haven't checked that yet, then maybe it could just be that??
Hello theo rex! The Keystep isn´t a sound module - of course it isnt, it´s mainly a sequencer. In the video I connected the Keystep to a Korg Volca FM (via MIDI cable), which produced the sounds. The whole setup was quite simply: Keystep to Volca FM (MIDI) and Volca F M´s audio out into a Zoom H5 recorder (in multimode), which recorded also my voice. Concerning your second question: I think yes, the Keystep is best value for money in its range. I hope the video showed, what kind of sequencer the Keystep is and how it works. There maybe one alternative, which is the Korg SQ-1. The SQ-1 is more liíke a "conventional" sequencer, it is about 25 dollars cheaper and cannot (except for the sequencer functionality) serve as a MIDI controller (there are no keys). I´ll produce a video about the SQ-1 in 2019 (but it will last a bit, as I´m frantically working on "Modular City"). Enjoy your day! Rolf from rofilm-media.net
Hi David. Thank you for asking! Every sequence is automatically stored in the one of Keystep´s 8 sequencer registers, which you´d chosen when you programmed the sequence. There is no way of saving more than 8 sequences directly in Keystep. But you can - of course - transfer any programmed sequence to your computer. Enjoy your day! Rolf
@@davidsobel3303 Well, you did :-) Tleft most of the 3 knobs is the one to chose a register. Even iff you didn´t choose intentionally, the knob is adjusted to one of these 8 positions.
How does someone with no experience get this to work in Windows 10....Not a single video on youtube to show how this installs and works in windows. Right now I have a $118 paper weight. The users manual is useless unless your an experienced user. I just want to make some noise...Why things have to be so difficult? This should be plug and play or step by step instructions on getting this to work in windows....Any help or a video on the subject would be helpful....thanks in advance.
Hello Popart 2015. You´re right. It would lead to a kind of legato, but a quite "unmusical" kind, because even when you play legato - for excample on a real piano - you hear one note end and there isn´t that blurring between two consecutive notes, that whould occur with gate = 100%.
Thank you for the no blabbering, no bullshit tutorial. I wish all tutorial vids on UA-cam were this on point. Great job!

Thank you for showing me why my Keystep wasn’t recording sequences... I didn’t have the ‘Internal’ switch on the back selected 🙃
Yes, that´s a quite common mistake. Enjoy your day! Rolf (and if you eventually come acros my website www.rofilm-media.net, and subscribe to my newsletter, you will not only get a free non-public tutorials, but might also get more useful information from time to time)
Looking for a controller and this video made up my mind. Picking up one tommorow at guitar center.
Complete and educational presentation 🤔
I´m glad I could help a bit. Thank you for commenting. And, yes, I think it´s a very good choice for its price. Enjoy your day! Rolf
Great video! Very informative about some features not featured in any other video. Thank you!
Thank you, Alexander, for commenting. It´s important for me to know, if my videos are helpful or not. By the way: there´s a lot more of this stuff at my website www.rofilm-media.net, and if you´re a bit interested in modular synthesis, you may want to know about Modular City: ua-cam.com/video/EHOPosGnfDo/v-deo.html
Enjoy your day! Rolf
41:21 thank you , oh What I didnt know🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

great tutorial. Thanks!
very good explanation. under-rated one
Thank you, Sathish! Enjoy your day! Rolf
How can i get the keystep sequencer (slave) to be triggered via midi by the elektron model samples (master)? Have the right cables and dip switches and even tried changing settings in midi control center but no luck!
Phenomenal tutorial! Please do one on the Beatstep Pro
Thank you zee zee! Well, the Beatstep pro. I´ll have to earn some money to buy one at first :-(
Excellent detailed tutorial.
Many thanks for putting this together.
Way way better than the knob jockeys who just promote themselves
Thank you Laurie for your motivating comment. Enjoy your day! Rolf
many thanks Rolf and have a great weekend@@rofilmmedia2
How do you erase a sequencee? very important point you did not mention. please help!
That Volca is DEFINITELY haunted by the way. 👻👻
@@rofilmmedia1 Thanks. Hardly waiting for your "problems and setups" videos.
Hello Jae Kim! The "T" stand for "tripple". Enjoy your day! Rolf (and please don´t forget to share my videos :-)
Rolf
@@rofilmmedia1 I read it below another comment already, I wish you much success with the Modular City project!
@@couchcamperTM Thank you very much indeed!
Hello, thanks for the video. Very useful! What kind of cables do you need for the CV outputs (mod, gate and pitch)?
Many thanks!
🙆🏻♂️👏👏👏😉👍💯
Thank you very much indeed! Enjoy your day! Rolf
My start button flashes and never plays back. Ideas?
Can it be synced with the Korg MS20 mini? And can be used via midi?
Simple answer: yes, and yes. Enjoy your day! Rolf
Rolf
I cant get it to play back sequences. Any help?
You sound like a cross between Werner Herzog & Giorgo Moroder.
While such a grotesque picture might instill a general sense of dread in the hearts of many, the banality of putting 4 on the floor is ultimately inevitable.
I just read your second sentence out loud in the style of Werner Herzog, and it really made me laugh.
This is a great tutorial, thank you.
Regarding the pencil test and chord mode, isn't the Volca FM only three note polyphonic?
Thank you, Andy for your comment. I´m happy you like my tutorial. And, yes, I forgot to switch synths in that test. But the result is as I told in the video. Enjoy your day! Rolf
I recognized organic from the fm immediately haha
how can i clear sequencer same sounds on loop plz helppp
Hi , i need some help cause i use keystep in ableton like a keyboard, with usb/midi cable , and i can't use the sequencer and harp mod, can you help me please ? Thx for all
Hello Nicolas. Just to get it right: You´ve plugged your MIDI cable coming from the Keystep into a USB audio interface and this audio interface via USB to your computer. Is that the case?
@@rofilmmedia1 yes indeed
@@nicolasdelliac8098 Hi Nicolas! Sorry for answering a bit later. I´ve been suffering from the flu, but it´s getting better. Well, I´ve tried to reproduce your problem, but whatever I tried, no problem occurred. I´m not working with Ableton at the moment though. I tried with FL Studio as well as with Reaper. No problems! Perhaps the MIDI channels of the sequencer and of your Ableton apps/VSTs etc. aren´t the same?
@@rofilmmedia1hello, it's working now i was searching for a long time but it's working :D with ableton
@@nicolasdelliac8098 I´m pleased to hear that! Would you like to tell us/me, what the problem was and how you solved it? Others may have the same problem. Enjoy your day! Rolf
A+
I tried to record something.
@@victorserrano4961 thanks for your reply. I have solved it by changing the midi settings.
Is there a way of deleting all notes in sequence at once?
Press REC then TAP then SHIFT+STOP
My keyStep came with 8 sequences already in the eight slots. I can’t play over top of them to record new ones. I can’t record at all. Not with midi. Not with usb
I was having a problem of not getting the sequencer to work, then I realised the internal clock wasn't switched to midi. If you haven't checked that yet, then maybe it could just be that??
That's a handy tool if you cannot play with 2 hands at thee same time.
Where is the sound coming from? Have you connected a speaker to it? Also, please tell me if it's best value for money product in it's range?
@@rofilmmedia1 thanks!
I think it’s the best value for your buck. You can control anything with this bad boy!
is there a method for saving a sequence within the key step?
Rolf
um, I didn't choose a register...how do you do that?@@rofilmmedia2
@@davidsobel3303 Well, you did :-) Tleft most of the 3 knobs is the one to chose a register. Even iff you didn´t choose intentionally, the knob is adjusted to one of these 8 positions.
ahh, I see. So every sequence will be recorded by the turn of the sequence knob to a new number. Thank you!@@rofilmmedia1
Do you have a DAW installed on Windows?

14:17 100% would mean legato right? I believe that's why the maxim value is 90%...
Hello Popart 2015. You´re right. It would lead to a kind of legato, but a quite "unmusical" kind, because even when you play legato - for excample on a real piano - you hear one note end and there isn´t that blurring between two consecutive notes, that whould occur with gate = 100%.
16:48 yeah buddy. "Laid back"
new firmware out !
Will the keystep remember its sequencer data after powering off?
