    I live here, this is what we do; land at LGA, go outside, find the machine, buy a metrocard---in front of machine the Q70 bus comes, you go to the 7 Train in 10 minutes---enter 7 station, swipe the same card for free transfer, go up stairs to 7. Get on to Manhattan, arrive in 30 minutes. The 7 goes under East River tunnel, you come up under 42nd street. The third stop in is Times Square. All for $ 2.75. The 7 is the most ethnically mixed ride in the world, enjoy the languages.

    • @annagibbons2563
      @annagibbons2563 7 років тому +2

      Rick Renner is the bus free then? You only have to pay for metro card?

    • @azzure001

    • @mexamrc
      @mexamrc 7 років тому +1

      Anna Gibbons the bus is the same fare. if you get on the subway first and then get out and need to take a bus, it's a transfer and aren't charged. The same from bus to subway. However, any more additional rides, after the transfer, you will be charged again the $2.75.

Helps us New York-o-philes a LOT!! Love the information you share here, extremely helpful, thank you!

      Thank you! That was bugging me too. Not only Manhattan but all 5 boroughs. I have seen drivers from out of state get out of their cars to try to stop pedestrians so they can turn right on red. One of the biggest dangers to cyclists in NYC.

    See? You get someone who just got to the city to make a youtube video and you learn things about your own city you didn't know. Like this bit about cars being able to make right turns on red lights. I've been in New York all my life and didn't know this. You learn something every day.

  • @brooklynhellbetty
    @brooklynhellbetty 8 років тому +10

    Great video, thank you. I'm a fan of your helpful points of view and glad you've made it to my home city. I have a correction: no right on red, ever. In all 5 boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island) drivers are not allowed to turn right during a red light. (That doesn't mean it's strictly enforced.) And if you're walking all bets are off.
    Fellow fans and NYC travelers: Johnny T's NYC Tourist Tips is also a helpful video. The advice in it is spot on from us who live here. Kindly keep out of the way of the steady flow of foot traffic, especially during rush hour.
    My recommendations:
    Central Park is a must. The corner of East 59th Street & 5th Avenue is one of the best crossroads in the world. It's the horse-and-carriage corner of the park, across the street is the Plaza hotel, catty corner is the Apple Store (the one that is a glass cube). To the north on 5th Avenue, you have Museum Mile with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Guggenheim, and many others. To the south on 5th Avenue, you have Tiffany's, St. Patrick's Cathedral, and Rockefeller Center.
    Do not rent a car here. First of all, you're going to get killed in rental and parking charges (plus tax). Secondly, the average is 6.5 mph (10.4 km/h) driving in Manhattan. Use your smart phone to get subway directions, or just walk.
    Enjoy and Thank you

    • @QueensNativeNYC
      @QueensNativeNYC 8 років тому

      In some areas you can make a right turn at a red light if it is posted that you can do so.. But he made it seem that a right turn can be made at every red light and that`s certainly not the case!

    This is a wonderful guide!! I live in rural America and the thought of traveling to such a huge city is overwhelming. But while it may seem mundane just telling us about metro cards, where to buy them and the average costs of transportation. That is something amazingly helpful for someone who has never had anything but their own car to jump into and cruise a good 80 miles to reach the nearest JCPenny's LOL!

    I guess this video is around a year old so... whoops on my part. But I just have to let people know of bagels with lox since you didn't mention it. If you're at a bagel shop seriously consider it, every shop will have it. It's more substantial than a bagel for breakfast and it's really more of a sandwich. For me it's the best way to get a bagel, hands down.
    Lox is salmon, and when served on a bagel should come with cream cheese, capers, and red onion at a minimum. It might sound odd if you haven't had fish dairy and capers in one place, but I promise it's amazing. A quintessential NYC staple.

    If you're doing the tourist thing, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a must see plus you get the additional bonus of a three-day pass to all the museums that are run by the Met such as the Cloisters, which is a particular favorite of mine. Essentially this means one full day at the Met with two more to see the other stuff. Be aware that the price is by suggested donation for New Yorkers and $25 for everyone else, but that's still a great deal since 1) the Met is one of the greatest museums of art in the world (plus you don't have to wait an hour or more to get in for same-day tickets), and 2) you get the other museums in the system as add-on. Also visit the Main Branch of the New York Public Library on 5th Avenue; it's a veritable temple of learning and the architecture is fantastic.

    My wife and I are going to NYC in August (our first trip, although I went there so far back (without proper resources) it doesn't really count) and then in September we're going back to Mexico City for a second time, after enjoying a week there over the holidays 2017/2018. I expect both cities to have pluses and minuses. We're from the Los Angeles area, so we have that as a lifelong benchmark, both good and bad. I will be particularly interested in two things, since culture and food are wonderful in both places (and, yes, Californians largely do NOT know what good pizza tastes like): 1. Convenience of public transportation and 2. Cost-per-benefit ratio. My own personal experience with public trans (largely the metro/subway system) for Los Angeles is F, for Chicago it's a B, and for CDMX, Buenos Aires and Santiago, Chile it's an A. Plus, in Mexico City, you can go ANYWHERE for five or six pesos! That's 25 to 30 cents, USD. Simple, affordable, and it gets around a city which probably is slightly bigger than NYC. The other thing is food. Quality of food is probably equal (as a Californian, I am absolutely DYING to try authentic NY pizza (having a taste for it in Connecticut/Mass./Upstate NY). But so far, my favorite food in all the world is CDMX genuine street/sidewalk food. There is no froo-froo involved: fresh ingredients, purchased at a nearby market, no preservatives, no tricks, no hidden ingredients, all prepared while you watch (and not too long!), friendly neighbors offering a chair or a tip, and a genuine, almost family atmosphere, for ALWAYS less than $5, usually even less. It's hard to beat, and it's addictive. Who knew you could do so much with fresh produce and a little fresh chicken, pork or beef? Still, I am excited by our late-summer visit to NYC and exploring just a few of its highlights (we will have tix to a game at Yankee Stadium), but especially the off-the-beaten track places, like we did in CDMX and Buenos Aires. We find that back streets are the places where you really discover the culture and the people. Geez. I'm long-winded about this. Sorry.

    Manhattan is a nightmare to drive in but honestly it works. Makes you use other means. I fucking loved how I could just leave the hotel, get into a subway, ride to anywhere like the mall near the WTC, eat at a beautiful deli near the water separating you from New Jersey, take a walk and see people from all around the world and amazing sights and smells. I went to New York in the summer and I agree with certain people that the climate is kind of gross with it being super humid and not to mention polluted, and this is coming from someone who is from in and outside London which also has a very polluted and humid climate. New York however was on a whole other level during the summer.
    That being said, I think it is worth making a trip in the summer just to go to Coney Island in Brooklyn.
    I think it's worth experiencing New York in both the summer and the winter.

    *DO NOT TURN RIGHT ON RED LIGHTS* NY state and some parts of the city (queens brookly and bronx) you are able to turn right ONLY where you have sign. manhattan due to the heavy traffic this signs are nonexisting. and the only area where you can turn right without a sign will be on Long Island, upstate or new jersey. So, just do not turn right on red.

    Do not come to the US and expect not to ever tip the waitstaff, don't be that asshole tourist. Being an American I find tipping to be an outdated method (restaurants should pay them a decent amount. It is silly for them to rely on consumers to pay for their living expenses) but I do not take that out on them by revengefully not tipping when the service is good, if it's bad then don't. We understand a lot of other countries do not do this, but we do.
    If you just don't want to tip then don't go to any sit-down meals. (Hell, my husband doesn't like tipping the workers at Sonic so we pull in a carspot, see what we want on the menu then head to the drive thru and order.)

      xyzzyx xyzzyx Are you from the United States? Do you know that the average waiter or waitress makes about $2 an hour? They rely on those tips and when you DON'T tip because you don't believe it's your responsibility to pay and that it's "extotion" your meal is costing them money since they have to tip the other people involved in giving you a good meal and service. They have to tip the bus boy that clears your plates and the bartender that mixed your drink. Sometimes after working a 40 hour week their pay checks are less than $100 because they have to declare their tips and if they get tipped on a credit card, they have to pay taxes on that. I don't know what your profession is, but I'm sure as hell you wouldn't want someone to undercut your pay because they think that it's not worth it. God, I hope everyone that serves you spits in your food.

      IMO tipping is part of our culture here in the US. Maybe the rest of the world doesn’t understand but they should respect our culture when they come and visit the US. Having traveled overseas for more than 20 years I respect others cultures when visiting different countries and also follow them (ie in Europe you sometimes have to pay extra for eating at a table then take out). For me tipping is only a few extra dollars to add to the bill . I usually pay 20% so a 40 dollar bill I would just add 8 dollars tip. I don’t work in the service industry but majority of people ive encountered in restaurants and hotels work very hard.

    For travelers, about tipping - yes tip 15% on your check (no need to go over 15%) BUT to make you happy here's the good thing --> Be sure to make the servers work twice as hard for that 15% tip. Make yourself feel like a King when you're dining, extra sauce, extra this extra that, refills. (Only as needed but the point is don't hesitate to ask EXTRA Stuff)
    Most importantly if you do not like the food brought to you (be it for taste/temperature or whatever) DO NOT hesitate to send it back. Call your server and have them bring you fresh food (say please). Yes make the restaurant work for you because it's your money. Many tourists would just eat whatever even if you they don't like it, Do not do that. You are the King over here, demand good food and service, that's where this tipping culture in America comes in.
