  • A Network Rail and North Lanarkshire Council project to replace the bridge deck on Bellside Bridge at Cleland, Wishaw, has been completed.
Work to raise the height and prevent the bridge from being damaged by high-sided vehicles began in August 2021. The The A73 at Cleland is now open with the bridge deck now replaced with a thinner one, providing additional headroom under the structure.
The railway bridge was the most frequently struck in Scotland and the seventh most struck in the UK. When a vehicle strikes the bridge, the road and railway must be closed while an inspection is carried out and traffic diverted through Cleland village. The work which took 8 weeks was undertaken by Story Contracting.

Interesting comments at the end about opening up the area obviously the man has foresight.

I never cease to be amazed by the number of cretins who obtain a truck driving licence and seem to immediately forget about the need to know the height of their loaded vehicle. I have lost count of the number of times that I have repeatedly checked clearance whilst backing into one of our construction sites or (more rarely) driving out with a relatively tall load.
