@@princeshanghai The chorus, of course with different lyrics, also found its way into various sports stadiums. Especially in Germany, when the country's top soccerteam, Bayern Munich, plays, the opponents sing a lyric against Bayern and the Bayern fans sing one for their own team. And yes, many children have probably grown up with Yellow Submarine in kindergarten over the decades. And Ringo sings... But the number isn't entirely harmless, as psychedelic drug use also played a part in its creation.

@@princeshanghai Paul always insisted it was just a fun kids song, just to lighten the mood of the album, after 'Rubber soul' love was no longer the central theme of every song, but the more adventurous they got with their lyrical subject matter, the more fans looked for hidden meanings. Sometimes there were actual drug references but sometimes it was just random wordplay that then created wild speculation and meaning where there was none. The Beatles also had a zany sense of humour, and were huge fans of the comedy team known as 'The Goons', who 's BBC radio show had a bizarre range of characters with silly voices, and surreal situations that could stir the imagination, all aided by crazy sound effects. 'Yellow submarine' is The Beatles just having a bit of fun and being very silly, like their comedy heroes. At the time it was another departure from anything they had done before, but it's also the kind of old time music hall style singalong song that John would start to criticise Paul for writing, as each subsequent album would have something from Paul like this song which would divide opinions in the band and amongst fans.

They were and will always be (in a literal as well as spiritual sense) the greatest band ever and I'm glad that you enjoyed this album so much. But I must say, your videos are truly a trip --- there are no words to describe how I feel about them other than to use your own term (used to describe the song _For No One)_ --- _"Morbidly Beautiful"_ 17:30. That phrase pretty much sums up the _David Lynch_ feel you bring to this whole endeavor with the photos you choose and atmosphere you create.

The Beatles were the greatest band ever. From 1965 on they never repeated themselves. They didn't settle on a single genre. They made sure each song was different. Bands today seem like they use the same production techniques over and over again. The Beatles were not afraid to experiment.

  • @thisishere

Most of the changes in sound are due to The Beatles broadening their musical influences, as well as drug influences. The Beach Boys album "Pet Sounds" was the main influence for the next Beatles album you will hear "Sgt Peppers" Pet Sounds incorporated sounds and instruments never before used in rock records. Pet Sounds was actually influenced by Rubber Soul, the Beach Boys and The Beatles has a friendly rivaly in the early to mid sixties, with each band raising the bar higher and higher than the other had. Pet Sounds is a must listen to album as well, many people say it's the best album of all time. The drug influences can be heard more in this album with LSD, the more psychedelic sound is apparent as it will be on Sgt Peppers as well. Paul McCartney said he also used cocaine regularly while recording Sgt Peppers, I know you will love it, love your reactions.

"Yellow Submarine" is a wonderful song, if for no other reason than due to the production and in creating -- through sound effects and recording techniques -- a "theater of the mind" experience. Also, it's a wonderful sing-along for all the folks -- children included -- down at the Pub! It's a very British, fun sing-along. We love their songs which were, essentially, written for children and the young-at-heart, right?

  • @SomOsog

One thing to keep in mind while you're listening to Beatles albums in order is that they frequently (not always) left their hit songs off their albums and only released them as singles. You may have missed several of their songs by now, if you've only been listening to their albums. For example, the hit single that was released around the time of this album was Paperback Writer (A side) with Rain (B side), which didn't appear on this album.
You say you're about to listen to Sgt. Pepper's next. It is possibly the most critically acclaimed album of all time... yet there weren't any songs from it that were released as singles. That's something amazing to keep in mind.
It's really a complicated story.... The Beatles albums that are considered "canon" today are mainly how The Beatles released them in the UK, but at the time, the US albums were different up until Sgt. Pepper. Sometimes they had similar covers, and sometimes not. Sometimes the album titles were the same, and sometimes not. The songs included and the running order were different, and the number of songs on the albums were fewer. The same kinds of things were going on in other countries as well. One exception to today's canon is the album Magical Mystery Tour (MMT). That's the only US Beatles album that later became canon. That's partly because the soundtrack for MMT only came out as a double EP in the UK. While they frequently left off their hit singles in the UK (and what is now canon), they did frequently get included on albums in other countries. Soundtrack albums from movies are also exceptions to this. The hit singles "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help!" were included on the soundtrack albums, for example. Regardless, when they standardized their albums in the 1980s to make today's canon, they added the two albums Past Masters Vols. 1 & 2 to include all the hit singles (A & B sides) that weren't included on all their other albums.
Another difference of note is that mono recordings were more common in the earlier days. They spent more time and attention mixing for mono, and doing a stereo mix was an afterthought. Also, the US albums usually added more reverb. Some contend that the best way to listen to the earlier Beatles is in mono.

Fantastic review! (And I'm glad you got your light situation fixed, lol.) I think by now you can get a sense of the evolutionary phases the Beatles went through, and also how the music itself was changing. You are NOT hearing the same kind of rock n' roll on Revolver that you heard on their previous albums. Around '66/'67 the scene was changing, and so did the Beatles. I like how you said this was a turning point, it really was! Rubber Soul was already heading in that direction (remember the Indian sitar used in Norwegian Wood -- George REALLY put it to work on Love You To). They were experimenting with sounds and, as others have mentioned, mind bending drugs.
Thing is, after they got incredibly experimental in the studio, they went back and stripped it all down again for the White Album. But we'll get to that when we get to that.
Oh yeah my top faves? You could probably throw a dart at this album and whatever it lands on is a top fave 😄

So many things changed going into this album, they were already sick of not being able to hear each other on stage due to all the screaming fans, and realised the only way they could develop as songwriters was within the sanctuary of EMI studios, cocooned from all the 'Beatlemania'. Unhampered by not having to consider how to perform new songs live, they could use the studio as their experimental playground and add any instrument they wanted. Their success gave them unprecedented control and access to the studio whenever they felt inspired, often arriving half way through the day and working late into the evenings. The previous stuffy 9 to 5 attitude of EMI had little alternative than to accommodate their most lucrative band. The Beatles long time producer, George Martin, really came into his own creatively and his experience with arranging music and classical instruments, plus his previous knowledge of working with crazy sound effects on novelty comedy records would also prove very useful as they went fully psychedelic on their following couple of albums. They came in with ideas that would really challenge their producer to create pioneering developments in many studio techniques. Improvements were being made in getting punchier bass guitar sounds in the studio and onto vinyl, and the use of various tape effects such as reversing the playback, speeding up or slowing down recordings, or using tape loops, were amongst many studio techniques. The band were also expanding their knowledge by moving in wider creative social circles, as well as being introduced to new drugs (ones which were not yet illegal). 'She said, she said' was inspired by an acid party in L.A., and the 'She' was actually a 'He', the film actor Peter Fonda related how he'd accidentally shot himself in the stomach when he was 10 years old and his heart had stopped three times on the operating table. John was tripping and on hearing Fonda's pronouncements, it brought out Lennon's insecurity and temper, and he wanted Fonda thrown out of the party. It's only my theory but I think 'And your bird can sing' is an early dig at Paul, the 'bird' being his music or his muse. John and Paul's relationship was always competitive, and John in particular could be spiteful and jealous and always felt he was the leader. They would push to impress each other, and being the first one to discover something new was the driving engine of the band. I think it's John subtly reminding Paul that in his friend's quest for knowledge it might not turn out to be all he thought it was, and maybe that Paul had started to drift away and loose touch with John and no longer get him (i.e. understand him) like they used to. Paul was always the one pushing hardest for the next project, whereas John could often be very lazy (hence his 'I'm only sleeping' track). They were just like sibling rivals, but creatively at their best when willing to collaborate, plugging the gap when one of them got stuck for an idea and balancing the other's worst excesses.

@@princeshanghai Put very simply, 'Rubber soul' was their Pot album, 'Revolver' and 'Sgt. Pepper...' their Acid albums. If 'Revolver' has you fired up then their next two following albums will truly blow your mind. A few bits of advice though, if you are experiencing their music chronologically and in context, before you get into each album, bare in mind that they continued a long standing policy of releasing a single in advance of each album. These contained two songs that would not appear on the imminent album, they felt it was short changing their fans to include them. So, 'Rubber soul's advance single release was 'Day tripper' backed by 'We can work it out'. Just Before 'Revolver' came out, there was the hit single 'Paperback writer', with 'Rain' on the B side. Before 'Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band' album there was the double A side single 'Strawberry Fields forever' and 'Penny Lane'. Before the 'Magical Mystery Tour' EP/ Album, there was 'I am the walrus' backed by 'Hello, goodbye'. All these fabulous singles gave you a wonderful taster for what was to come on the following album, and they all certainly deserve to be included with each relevant album reaction you do. I think from your info you are listening to the most recent remix versions of The Beatles catalogue by Giles Martin, (son of original producer George Martin), who has (IMHO) done a great job remixing the songs for a modern audience. Previously fans have only had various remasters of the original stereo mixes to choose from, but the limitations and peculiarities of how they were original recorded in the 60's does make for some odd choices they made back then, such as all the drums, or a lead vocal, being panned hard left or right in one ear only. Hardcore fans will passionately disagree on which released versions best represent each song, but at least there is a wide choice to select from now. For me, Giles has now sympathetically balanced the tracks whilst being respectful of his father and The Beatles, work, whilst greatly improving separation and sound quality, revealing layers and subtleties, previously not discernible. I have listened to their music all my life, but have experienced these old favourites anew with Giles's remixes, which place you there in the room with The Beatles refreshed and very present. You really are missing a whole other element to your journey though by not using headphones for your first reactions, the difference is astonishing, similar to the difference of surround sound at the cinema, or putting on 3D glasses. No matter how good your speakers are, from 'Rubber soul' onwards it's a must to experience this music with headphones on first.

Yes, this is a really great album. You seemed to not like "Yellow Submarine" as much as the others, and if I had to pick a weakest song on the album, that would be my choice too. I don't think it's bad at all, but I like the other songs more. It was a single, so it's one of the best known songs on the album, which is why it has a high number on the source that you checked. Interesting that your top 5 songs were all by John or George, whereas I think of this as more Paul's album, where Rubber Soul is more John's album. "Eleanor Rigby", "Here, There & Everywhere", "For No One", and "Got to Get You Into My Life" are all absolutely top notch Paul songs, and I think among the best songs on the album.

It's nice when watching/listening to a music reaction when you can hear the music being reacted to. Not in this video, though. Short snippets cut from the middle of songs, and each snippet being interrupted after a few seconds to move to a different part of the track. Herky-Jerky is the name for that style. I suppose this is to avoid the UA-cam revoking something of value, but it makes for an incredibly poor video. Other reactors don't seem to have this problem - so what's the issue that's keeping you from producing an actual music reaction video that's enjoyable?

Then don’t watch simple. I do not skip parts of any song. Take it how you want. I do not care. If you wanna listen to the song in it entirety there is a link in the description. Also it’s on UA-cam. Have a great day Pookie.
