An easier way than joining the top and bottom is to tie your box knots until you are 2/3rds of the length of the cross then slide two pieces of cord under the next box knot and centre them, tighten the box knot then add two more pieces of string in the centre of the next box knot , parallel to the other two strings, tighten the knot then finish the remaining third of your cross. You then tie your arms using the 4 pieces of cord on each side of the main part of the cross and you won’t have a hole in the centre.
