I skated back when muska was in his prime, and this was a trick that I could do in every stance...i think the key to making it look like the real thing is a slight frontside tilt to the shuv. And we must remember that nobody used the names "illusion flip" or "muska flip" back then. It was just the way we did hardflips and frontside flips back then. That's how it got listed in magazines, and skaters knew the difference between a real one and a hard shuv. Also, if you're gonna name it after a skater, it should have been Chet Thomas. Your switch and nollie versions look correct.

For some reason some regular skaters find this easier than a heel or kickflip I skate goofy so I'll never understand that. But I had a friend that skated regular that basically was trying to shove it with a varial and this is what happened. And it kinda became his signature as well. We had no idea what ypu would call it either. We just called it a vertical shove it.

This is great. This is how I learnt to pop shoves and I always thought they looked like hardflips! Once the board goes vertical it basically has to flip one way or the other, otherwise it lands grip facing down. So if it goes vertical it’s no longer a shuv and will be either hardflip/inward heel depending on which way the board goes. I think 🤔

When i started skating (around muska time) 5:55 this was a legit hardflip back then. Nobody could do it like they do them today. u had a better chance of landing the trick, when your board was a bit shorter, because u have hit your nuts so often :D my foot placement was so weird to get the kickflip rotation and not heelflip. man it was fun back then, now im old and too fat to skate xD ah i forget, in a game of skate it only counted as a hardflip when u have seen the complete underside of the board in the air (from skaters perspective)

@djmikka06: There were regular hardflips before the Muska flip became a thing. And the Illusion flip is about as old if not older than the hardflip. So I don't think you are correct. As happens with some tricks, sometimes it is just a trend of people doing Muska flips instead of hardflips etc. It doesn't usually have anything to do with people not being able to do these tricks.

100%+ respect for this video! Also, yeah, there will always be a healthy discussion about when a trick is a trick with a certain name. I don't think illusion flip always has to have a body varial. But that's fine either way. You're probably right, this time around!

Your nollie hardflip and switch hardflip are proper flips. The Muska hardflip era was a strange time. Most people didnt care if it flipped or not, they just liked seeing them with pop. Thats the reason why I stopped doing them, I knew I was cheating my way into a hardflip.

Best advice I can give is be very light on your feet, shoulders prepped for fs rotation, very subtle upward flick, and jump OVER board.

Your back foot has to pop then slide out forward while your front foot guides the hard flip. That’s the part you’re missing, that’s why the toe is in the pocket for a pressure heel. The back foot pops flat and slides out, that’s what gives the smooth look of the trick as it’s all done in one giant smooth action.

for illusion flip, notice the board has to do a half flip to land on the wheels. when you do a pop shove it the board doesn't flip at all. pop shove it rotates 180 degrees horizontally. illusion flip still does a 180 rotation, but vertically. Since it rotates vertically instead of horizontally the board also has to do a half flip so you can land on grip tape.

the thing is, during that flip, the board is moving on two axes of rotation. as soon as, let's call it the horizontal axis, kicks in too soon while the vertical axis rotation isn't over, the flip tends to look like/ basically has the same rotation as a pop shove it. there is probably a certain degree of vertical axis rotation needed to happen in order to really identify the flip as a hardflip, if you wanne get real science-y about it. it is really a matter of spatial thinking and at what point the board flips in which direction in a three dimensional grid.

  • @ddubs0606
    @ddubs0606 2 роки тому

Can I add a tip? I can only do Muska hard flips. Back foot, point the toe, then shuv it out. Has a lot to do with the pressure, it starts to twist the board then when you shuv and release it, it will spin kickflip. Good luck!

Illusion flip is a muska flip body varial. And a muska flip is 'a' pressure flip. Not 'the pressure flip'. Muska found another way to do a pressure flip, where the board does a different move, then we know from 'the pressure flip', where the board does an inward heel rotation. Maybe there are even more than those two ways to to 'a' pressure flip, where we think of pressure flips as a trick categorie, not just one trick. And maybe we should even create more kinds of pressure flips. They are at least cooler than no complies. :D

This was my goto trick back in the days. I loved how the board went up to stick to my shoes, such a satisfying feeling. Add a grab on a 3 stairs and enjoy the ride.

Watching this was so painful for me because everyone in my neighborhood growing up did this trick! It's all about the backfoot placement, you keep the backfoot further back the opposite direction you'd place it for a 360 flip. You then pop the board completely vertical so that it does a vertical flip. Because of the position of your backfoot, it is going to flip in the heelflip direction SLIGHTLY. This gives you a lip to kickflip on and flip it over the other way.

you got it 100% right Jonny. Awesome video. :D this hard flip is approved and it looks rad. the back foot was the key. think it is easier with a little flick like on 13:21. the last hardflip was between muska flip and the usual hard flip. don't understand how some people say that the muska flip is an illusion flip. it is a clear hard flip.

In 2000 I discovered this trick and thought it was a hardflip. On a night of fun and tricks a "smart guy" appeared and said that it was a "splash" and not a hardflip.

  • @nedtempleton4873

I would say the 'Nollie Hardflip' counts as an 'Illusion flip' (it's more of an 'Illusion flip' than a true/real Hardflip) and the 'Switch Hardflip' is a Switch Hardflip. Also, the vertical Frontside pop shuvit you did previously is also an 'Illusion flip'. An 'Illusion flip' is any trick that spins/rotates vertically 180 degrees.

Nollie hardflip. Your first one is a beaut'. I didnt realize that there was that many hardflip variation. I love to see the breakdown. It wasn't too technical, Keep them coming. On another note, you should really check the Session Skateboard game coming up on Xbox and PC. They added primo slide last week. Im having so much fun !!!

youre supposed to flick a muska flip! exactly like u did in the first nollie hardflip. Just that somehow muska managed to do it without too much flick sometimes. To be able to call it a hardlip the bottom of the board needs to be pointing at least slightly upwards at some point, otherwise it would be a shuv it

  • @ianm659

Muska flips don’t have any flick. Finally found a trick I can do that Jonny was struggling with. The last one with the body varial was it!

  • @lukeknox8548

my brain hurt until you landed the nollie hardflip. I think the muska is dangerous because to create the pressure to make it flip and spin correctly it has to initaially go in the backside direction
