You help to get my headache go away.
The mechanic remove my trunk lock to change the vacuum and forgot to put the red lever back as you mention. They fight and fight to make the soft close to work but it fid not after i remember your video and I went ahead push it one time. Vela it works like magic now my whole car soft close work. Thank you very much for your effort.
Good explanation, thank you. I love in USA August to May and Lebanon June to September. So I have an W140 S320 in each country beside a 72 280sel. I feel so secured and comfortable driving the W140. Great cars.
Nice video man! This is how you help the W140 scene stay alive, i have 2 of them (CL500,S600L) and both have trunk soft close problems.

Exellent video, watching this again I know why the trunk button sometimes doesn't open the trunk.. vacuum/pressure is to weak. Does the vacuum pump get weaker with age , or does it just stop working?
If everything else works ok, Test the trunk circuit for vacuum leaks
Hey Andy, I read in one of the links you provided that maybe the red level was in the wrong position. I went out to my car, flipped the red lever over and the assist worked. But it only worked one time. Is there a special sequence and position this level needs to be reset or something? I pulled F9 in the trunk to reset it all, but now cannot get it to self close again. The microswitch in the catch must be working, because the handle retracts. Can you tell us, or show us how that red catch needs to be set for normal operation?
Hi Tom, Its been a while since i had to deal with this problem, try both positions , see which one works. I suspect most likely you have a vaccum leak in the system, just due to the age of the car.

Apparently there are 2 versions : As of chassis end no. 118121, the trunk lid closing assist striker is no longer controlled by the closing assist supply pump but by the PSE control module. Therefore, the microswitch (S88/3) as well as some mechanical parts have been eliminated.

Amazing video mate! I have an s600 w140 coupe. My doors soft-close but my trunk doesn't soft-close and I have to slam it shut just like you've shown. I suppose both lines, the CA line and the PSE line need checking? My PSE pump isn't working as the door central locking isn't working either.
Hi, it's been a while since i worked on my W140 will need to refresh my memory on vacuum system for this car. As you describe that's exactly the problem i had. Also find second video related to this problem.
For central locking check the fuse first...
my understanding was that the yellow plastic piece allows you to turn of the trunk lights with your key if you want to leave it open for extended amount of time
You might be right, but i can't confirm it as my lock is missing this piece. Not sure if it was removed on the facelift models after 1997.

Hi, I like the video and I have the same problems and is their a way I can isolate the soft closure as it drains my battery and have you got any info on the gear, as my car is stuck in the second, its the old type 722.419 so its hasn't got the conductor plate , Cheers
Hi. You need to find where's the vacuum leak. There are 2 pump son this car -
PSE and CA. PSE pump is under rear seat, CA pump is in the trunk behind the rear seat on the left.
You can remove the fuse and kill the CA pump completely or find the pump, disconnect the vacuum line and plug the port. But usually this should not drain your battery, there's a protection and the CA pump shuts off after short time if it keeps cycling.
Your car is not drivable anyway, just disconnect the negative from the battery
Transmission problem ... Are you sure the transmission is not in limp mode? Does your alternator work? Check the charge while car's running, it should be around 13.8-14 VDC.

The car drives but only to 40mph , I use it but I disconnect the battery when I don't use the car , it probably some other electrical fault if you think the vacuum wont drain the battery. Rather than go into the gearbox and dismantle everything I like to satisfy myself that it not some other small fault , like valve body springs or the controller has a fault etc.. Thanks for the info though

I need an advice, please. How to open the trunk of a mercedes w140 (95, 4.2 liters) I left the trunk open overnight, someone closed it. The battery in the trunk is already dead. it cannot be opened either with the yellow tubes leading to the trunk, or with the key in the trunk lock, the key can only be turned a few millimeters to the left. it has been closed for a long time, no one has given advice since then..
Hi Petr. Can you open the hood? There must be a positive (+) connection in the engine compartiment and negative (-) you can connect to any good ground. Use a spare battery or get your neighbor to help you. That should provide power and hopefully your remote works. The key should work, even if the battery is dead, something is wrong with the lock.

It doesn't work, the central locking system opens and closes all doors, it clicks in the trunk when opening and closing. that is all.

I am stucked with a trunk that does not open at all. I was stupid enough to try to fix my original problem that the softclose did not work without looking at your video first. Now i simply cannot open the trunk. I am out of ideers about what to do to get it open again. Help is appreciated
Insert your key turn counter clockwise then holding your key and push in, trunk should pop up. Good luck

Well it's hard to diagnose remotely. Can you turn the key? Could be that someone replaced the original lock?

I can't tell u exactly where is the problem, you have to check this system starting with the PSE pump .
I forgot to mention the trunk is empty - i can get the key in without problems - i can turn the key and press the button. It only does not release the lock.

Hi, are you sure the trunk lock is unlocked?
Have you adjusted the latch?
Try this, push on the trunk lid while pushing on the trunk lock

А в чем проблема...
да, и из под заднего крыла идёт звук вакума
вакуум течет. В насосе стоит защита, по-моему 9 секунд это мах время работы, потом насос отрубает чтобы не перегреть. Ищи где течет. У меня текло в соединении между насосом и трубкой.
да он перестаёт двери и багажник засасывать

есть у тебя схема вакуума?
похоже нужно начинать с насоса который под задним сидением с правой стороны
По-моему я слегка напутал, Там второй насос сидит слева в багажнике. насос под сидением отвечает за замки, подголовники, вакуумную системы отопления. За доводку дверей (и кажется багажника тоже) отвечает насос слева. Начинай с насоса слева.

а как до него дойти и проверить потому что оттуда звук идёт
нужно снять обшивку багажника. насос находится над. агкой левого колеса.
будь очень осторожен с пластмассовым соединениями. они очень хрупкие от старости.
по всей вероятности течь в коллекторе или внутри насоса, тк у тебя не работает вся система. если течь в отдельной трубке то не работает какая-то отдельная дверь или багажник.
я сам этот насос не снимал, поэтому всех мелочей не знаю.
Just finished fixing my W140 soft close trunk. This video and several others didn't help much at all. It failed to show the location of the pump causing me to rip apart the whole trunk to only find it under the back seat. Then the method of disconnecting the air lines without breaking them. Finally my problem was with the vane pump itself. Some how is misallocated the three parts and was leaking out the side and not pumping.

I believe there are two pumps one on the right driver side in the trunk pump there and also there is one on passages side back seat under there is a place who could fix them cheaper than buying new one I believe new one needs r
To be upload with ecu on the car so it could read I believe but I might be wrong
