In New Zealand, all semaphore signals ( Americans call them “blades”) have long gone. The last in the UK are in Devon and Cornwall, all be replaced now with colour lights by the end of 2024.
I see a 'Conestoga Wagon' on that hill...as the early settlers so thought...great ride, smooth and fast between Shoemaker Canyon and Raton!!! Thanks for the great video Russ! Al W. SANTA FE...ALL THE WAY!
I was on the #3 (you passed me in a siding controlled by search lights). I rode it just to catch that segment of the trip - to see in person the last remaining semaphore signals before they’re gone forever! We arrived in LA almost 5 hours late due to flash flood warnings in Kansas and freight interference in Arizona.
@@russellsharptrainvideos We ate dinner with a guy who talked about his buddy riding your train and the cow strike. He said they had to adjust the locomotives due to the damage.
The other difference in NZ is our gauge. It’s 1067mm or 3ft-6in, known as Cape Gauge. Queensland, Tasmania and Western Australia all have Cape Gauge as well. Large parts of Africa also run that gauge of track.
BNSF and New Mexico Department of Transportation have began the process of converting the Glorietta Sub from Wagon Mound to Raton and the Raton Sub from Raton to Trinidad to PTC. All the Searchlight 2s and the Semaphore Arms are on their last legs the Albuquerque Sub is okay since they had old Santa Fe Traffic Light Signals and they converted to PTC when Railrunner was built. The only section that is still Searchlight 2 and Semaphore is the Glorietta Sub from Wagon Mound to Raton and the Raton Sub from Raton to Trinidad by the end of the year all the Searchlight 2 signals will go dark and the Semaphores will be ripped up and sent to the New Mexico Rail Museum and this whole stretch will be PTC.

Thanks 🙏! Very informative!
With one daily train each way, why not just let the line go dark?
Warren, that would severely limit the maximum speed.
I wonder who is going to get those when ther'e taken out?
Mac, I saw many laying on the ground at a BNSF Railway facility at Las Vegas, New Mexico.
@@russellsharptrainvideos Don't need one, just wondering. I bought one from A&K railroad salvage back in 88 it was in ottawa ks.
Nice video. Hit a cow? Its always something right?
