    I totally forgot to mention a REALLY cool program one of my subscribers told me about.
    for mascara wands, you can donate them to this "Wands for Wildlife"
    They take old clean mascara wands and use them to clean animals.
    www.appalachianwild.org/wands-for-wildlife.html
    *Do you know of any other programs like this?*

    Very late to this video, but its also worth noting that you can repurpose makeup palletes in a few other ways: I use them for paint palletes, this works well for things that can be reactivated with water like watercolor and some gouaches. I have also seen people make their own lipsticks and balms in small quantities and put them in old eyeshadow palettes. You can also do this with that lassst little bit of lipstick in the tube to get to it easier. They're also great for organizing small beads as you work on a project. Not great as a travel container for beads - but it is a bit easier than trying to keep up with them on a plate or tabletop if you have specific colors you want.

    *This is a great video Shelby! :) Of course I'm a makeup lover, but I always feel bad about the amount of waste makeup packaging produces! However, since leading more of a minimalist lifestyle in the past year, I have decreased the amount of makeup that I buy tremendously!*

    Mac not only will take their empty packaging, but for every 6 items, you have a choice of getting a free lipstick or eyeshadow.

    In Australia you can recycle soft plastic (like plastic bags)
    They actually make them into outdoor furniture which holds up really well in the hot Australian sun

    I've almost completely used up my makeup from comapnies that aren't sustainable and am planning on ordering from Elate once I have a bit more money. I'm not going to buy any new makeup until then. I'm so excited to try Elate, especially because they are Canadian and I live in Canada.

    I really adore this video. Something I found extremely interesting was when you chimed in on plastic number 5. Honestly would adore a short video on the plastics, obviously we want to avoid them the best we can but it would be nice to have some form of a guideline. I know you're busy but that would be really interesting, even when you were talking about the easier and more difficult to recycle. Thanks again girl for such a good video

    Wow -- This video was SO helpful thank you! I'm in the process of cleaning out my bathroom drawers and have make up that is really, really old because I've never wanted to just toss it. I've been taking back my MAC make up packaging for years, but had some random stuff that I was really worried about discarding properly. So helpful to know about Origins! Also - I appreciate all the work you put in to trying to REDUCE the waste in make up packaging - you've really done your research and have inspired me to do more too! Thank you!

    Hey Shelbi, this year I started replacing my make-up products with cruelty-free and vegan options if they ran out. I discovered that a lot of cruelty-free and vegan options still contain microplastic (they mostly do if they are not "natural cosmetics"). I sometimes find it really hard to find products that work well, especially as I am a fan of long lasting lipsticks. What are your thoughts on microplastic? Do you look out for it?

    Thanks for sharing and spreading this message! I've stopped wearing all of my makeup except eyeliner and maybe once every few months Ill try lip colours for fun (which incidentally has helped my skin health tremendously now that Im not relying on concealer or foundation - to the point when I went to parties in the last few minths I just rely on lips or eyes I dont need foundation which is so amazing). Anyhow I have a lot of makeup unused and it was interesting to known what I could do with it if no one wants it and also the types of plastic involved in the packaging. I like how your channel has a little something different in comparison to some other sustainable or makeup channels

    Anyone can use terracycle -they have a lot of free options to return items or you can buy a box for a specific waste stream and return once full with the pre paid return label. The “all waste” box is a really great option for a small household. A little pricey but worth it if I can keep those items out of the landfill because they cannot be traditionally recycled.

    YOU FOUND THAT PALETTE IN THE DUMPSTER?!!!!!!
    holy shit, how wasteful this world is to throw perfectly good anything!!
    My mom works in a fruit and veggie factory and they have a colour chart for daikon radishes. They only accept the whitest, whitest, huwhitest, HUWHITEST, daikon radishes. So one day, my mom came home with about 5 massive ones that were not up to standards. THEY WERE BEAUTIFUL!!!!! DELICIOUS!!!
    It's so horrible how many people and companies have such strict quality restrictions/guidelines.
    Even if they dont plan on selling these items for money, why not give these things away?!
    sadly, it's bcus of money money money and greed :'(

  • @cyanjackson7689

    Thank you so much for mentioning this, it's such a relief to know there are other options besides Terracycle! I love the idea of them but as you said the website was confusing and kinda frustrating and they don't make it accessible to see drop off points for cosmetic products. And shipping it to them is impractical and way too expensive. I was developing some anxiety and lack of hope over the whole situation honestly because while I'm trying to be more sustainable now there are so many beauty products around my home that are not able to reused at this point and would otherwise be thrown out.

    It was a bit painful for me to watch a perfectly good makeup pallete being torn apart, but I loved the info!
    Where I live we recycle all types of packaging together and it's being sorted and separated in the facilities, but I will try separate materials from now on to increase the chances of it actually being recycled.
    When I buy items today I try keeping in mind what I can do with the packaging, normally I will only buy packaging I can reuse.
    I use old makeup pallettes to repress new pigments and create new pallettes!

    Idk if youve done it, have you done a lesson on recycling? I tried looking through your videos and didnt see anything specific. You were mentioning the types of plastic in this video and whats easier to recycle. Have you done a video on the different types of plastic, and what it is that goes into the recycling process; that makes it so harmful/toxic? I guess make a video teaching why its so important to rethink of our consumption habits and what we can do to reduce the use of plastic in general. I know you have the one on grocery shopping, where you use reusable produce bags and mention how thin plastic is hard to repurpose and recycle. Im really interested in that. What are other ways we can get in touch with you if we have more in depth questions?

    I'm sure this varies by program but thank you for this video!! I appreciate it so much!

    OMG yes girl. When you said the Terracycle website was "hard to figure out" I was nodding emphatically! I want to do what's right and consume less beauty products (and consume less overall or buy second hand) but I'm struggling to figure out what to do with the current stuff I'm using up and parting with. I'm still trying to figure out Terracycle myself but from what I've gathered they have free programs that you sometimes need to get on a waiting list for, you have drop-off sites, or you pay for a big box but it has to be for a certain category (i.e. just food packaging, just office supplies, or just beauty and personal care items). I want to do what's right but that is so pricey! That's really cool what Origins does. I'll definitely be checking them out! I've heard of Back to MAC before which is cool but unfortunate that they only take back their own products. Thanks for your very informative videos!

      Devon Sloan a seamstress might be able to patch them to make them look new. if you can’t find one then repurpose! is there something you need that you could sew from the fabric? if not see if there are any donation programs for fabric because someone could definitely use it.

    As far as terracycle goes, you can participate as an individual. You just sign up and join brigades. Then, when you are ready to send in the particular brigades items, you request a shipping label. But, if you stay inactive in said brigade, they do hold the right to, in so many words, kick you out. I've sent a bunch of stuff in to them and still have stuff I keep meaning to send as well.

  • @nvaranavage
    @nvaranavage 6 років тому

    Not really, you can collect for TerraCycle even if you are just an individual, but the free brigades you have to get a slot if they are available, once you have an account. Now the purchase boxes are big, so the idea is if you want to recycle a stream that doesn't have a free slot to sign up with (the make up is part of the health and beauty brigade) then what you are buying is the shipping cost not just the box. They have started doing a 20% off box of the month to help those that can't spend that much money.

    I’ve used terracycle before and you can just send in stuff from your home, you don’t have to be a large collector. I do it with contacts. I just search terracycle contacts in google and it should pop up. You can easily print a shipping label to send it! They do this with so many other things too! I usually wait until I have enough to send out and then I’ll send it in a big box. I think just making more specific searches may help!

    • @Shelbizleee
      @Shelbizleee  6 років тому +1

      Can you explain how? Because I tried to do that and it said I would need to pay at least $67 to print a shipping label, as I showed. There are contact drop offs near me by them, like I showed, but not cosmetics.

    • @GraceFay
      @GraceFay 6 років тому

      Shelbizleee I’ve only done the one for contacts, and that one was easy. They’ve seemed to have changed their regulations, and now you have to send in a 2 lb box, but it is still free to ship. As for beauty products, they do seem to have a program that is free with garnier, but you have to be on a waitlist for that! Seems like they’ve gotten way too much sent into them, which is disappointing since it used to be so much easier to send things in for free. Definitley would stick with bringing stuff into origins, and maybe try to get on the list for the garnier send in? I wouldn’t pay $67 to send in something, but that’s just me!

      @merrivideo 6 років тому +1

      temptresskitty if you use glitter, make sure is biodegradable. I read today about an European company that does that using eucalyptus. Regular glitter is plastic and if you rinse it with water, you are sending plastic to the ocean.

    • @absynthefaerie
      @absynthefaerie 6 років тому +1

      merrivideo I don’t wash glitter down the drain, I wipe it away with a makeup wipe and toss it into my burn bin 😉. Ohh and I never use craft glitter on my face, only cosmetic grade glitter by J Cat. I can’t get the all natural biodegradable stuff, I am not paying high prices for something that is wiped away...... Though I wish Lush would sell their glitter that dissolves that they use in the bath bombs.

    I've heard that 100% pure has a similar recycling program as origins but I think it's only for 100% pure cosmetics

      I think it's just for their stuff too :/ Not to mention, they only have a few locations, and none near me.

      I was just asking this before seeing this! I have a few of their products but I much rather give it all in one go! We gotta make it easier for people.

    As much I love this video and what she teaches us, did anyone else cringe when she used a perfectly good pallette to make an example of???

      +Irina Scully I put the shadows in my DIY magnetic palette. Nothing wrong with that 🙃

    Awesome! I also heard 100% pure takes back (their own?) packaging. Anyone who knows if they take back other brands too?

    Could you do a video on eco air fresheners? Maybe even zero waste one's for your house and car! I cannot seem to find a zero waste air freshener for your car that is eco friendly :(

      Emily Graceness a candle works well! You don’t even need to burn it to get the scent to permeate the small space of a car

      I wrote a blog post about them and I have a discount code for 15% off if you're still interested.

    Hello , my question is so if u throw that pallet in curb side recycle, not taking apart what will they do w/ it just trash it? I,be never thought of out this dish soap bottle can't go in my recycle. New @ this, I have always put plastic in the bin for the curb, news papers 2 friend w/ wood burners or the paper box @ my son's school. Ur a wonderful person.thanks for being u

      From what I know, yes. When I visited the recycling plant in my college town I realized single stream recycling is super inefficient. They basically put all of the materials on a conveyor belt and pick out the items they think are recyclable and the things they didn't pick off just went to the landfill. So if you put something that isn't recycle ready (ie. torn apart and separated) they are going to let it pass by.

    PSA: Origins disbanded the recycling program in California, so you can literally do it in any other state except for California.

    Hi Shelby, just found your channel the other day, I have subscribed and have been bing watching. First I want to say thank you for your content and your love of the earth. However I wanted to share with you another perspective on your makeup dives you may not be thinking about or even know or understand yet. Not sure if you realize that most of what you are scoring in your makeup dives is trash and should be left as trash. Just bear with me for a moment because this comment is being left out of love for you and not judgement. I believe you have a pure/good intention when doing this kind of thing and that you believe you’re saving yourself not only money but keeping waste out of the land fills, which you are, but at what cost? Do you realize that our skin is our largest organ and that it absorbs everything we put on it? Including makeup. The makeup you’re finding is very harmful to your body due to the combination of ingredients that are in such products, therefore in turn you’re not only filling yourself with toxins but you’re also contributing to helping others do the same with the give aways. I feel certain that is not your intention and that you believe you’re doing a good thing. However if my comment peaks your curiosity and you want to know more about what’s really going on your face and into your bloodstream I’m sure you can find plenty of info via a Google or UA-cam search. There are natural alternatives a person can choose to supplement ones makeup routine but I doubt you will find any of that kind of makeup in the trash as they are mainly available via website orders. Yes you might have to pay for the product but in the long run you’re investing in your overall health instead of unconsciously creating the possibility of some nasty diseases to develop within you. I can only hope this comment sparks an investigative interest in you and that you move forward and educate yourself on the products you’re finding. Peace ✌️, Much love 💕, Namaste 🙏.

    Great video! OMG. Exactly what I wanted to see. Found you by doing research for my daughters company. She cleans and sanitizes cosmetic containers and sends them back to the brand for reuse. Check her out on IG. @recover_beauty
