  • My favourite scene from my favourite film as a child, in which the defiant Gauls have to endure twelve herculean tasks in order to prove their godhood to Ceasar and the might of Rome.
After conquering athletes, magicians, nymphs and beasts, Asterix & Obelix face the deadliest challenge of all; accountancy, bureaucracy and bad customer service.

@@geronimo5537 It doesn't help that the people who write the regulations don't write them sensibly, or even with a sound legal foundation a lot of the time.
It's the same thing with medical and education issues in govmt where politicians with no experience in these areas are making decisions that literally affect life and death for tens/hundred of millions of citizens.
In the US the only department of govmt that habitually uses staff with appropriate experience is the administration of the military which usually is dominated by the higher ranking members like generals and admirals.
If regulations were written by people who actually have recent experience being affected by the issue being regulated with help from lawyers to make the regulation concise and legally strong then it wouldn't be such a ballache.

I notice that Asterix defeats a lot of the tasks that can't be bruteforced by simply tricking the taskmasters into trying to complete their own tasks. I'm starting to realise how silly the 12 tasks are due to them being technically designed by mortals, therefore the act of testing the divinity of Asterix and Obelix is as much hubris as attempting the 12 tasks.

    • @KingOfElectricNinjas
      @KingOfElectricNinjas 5 місяців тому +41

It's quite common for Asterix in the movie and in the books. Especially since the Gauls are basically fighting a guerrilla war where their brute force advantage is situational, and they don't always have access to the magic potion, he uses the strength and resources of his foes against themselves. It's also a fitting allusion given Hercules is often shown to be quite cunning when his strength fails, and even in using his strength in the optimal way.

Well that's still kinda logical in a way : I mean why would they send back clients who already know about and who are asking for something specific instead of going to check it themselves? It's their job after all, they have to get filled in on everything.
But yeah I so wish this kind of trick would work irl, just for simple payback for all the trouble they put us through, especially here in France (cause yeah, don't forget that the Astérix & Obélix comics, and thus this movie, is French).

Its because other than the guy at the front, everyone else only sees the people who were sent to them, if they don't know where to send Asterix they have to deal with him themselves, and if they have no idea about that form, then they will have to deal with it the next time it comes up. Its why asterix asked the one person who was having a good time gossiping, she had something she wanted to get back to, and was a window person who was supposed to "help" It then snowballed because they all know it will be horrible for them if they don't know what is going on, but since it was a wild goose chase it had no end point for them to reach, they just kept draging more people in.

Failed my driving license exam twice after getting the witten exam then moved away to an other department in France. Tried to pass it 2 years later. They asked for my file which I had to ask to my previous driving school which never answered email or phone. Took 2 months to figure they threw away my file which they were supposed to keep 5 years. I asked what to do to a driving school I wanted to register at. They told me I needed a number which I could only get in the office department where I pass the first test, which I moved away from. But to ask for the number you need to be resident of the department and show a proof of residency... Took me a month to get make up some papers saying I live there. I send in the papers wait 2 weeks to get the number. Go back to the current driving school to register, and they tell me since I have the written exam the number is useless... Now I need to ask for the driving file the department office which takes 4-6 months to transfer. I pretty much gave up at this point.

I remember once that I just wanted to update the adress of my driving licence, the lady at the office told me "this isn't where you're doing such procedures".
After insisting, she gave me a ticket for the queue telling me "that I'm just gonna lose my time" and that it is "pointless".
Once I was to the counter, the lady updated my information in less than 2 minutes. I told her about what the lady at the front desk told me, she went "oh nevermind, don't listen to her. She's just bitter because she doesn't like her job".
Before leaving, I went back to the front desk telling politely to that lady that they actually updated my informations, just in case if she wouldn't have the information.

This comic/cartoon is a part of my childhood and it feels great to see that it could be the case for other people all around the globe. I think it's interesting to note that the french administration was something very special and the epitome of bureaucracy when this comic/cartoon was made. It is due to the fact that France has one of the biggest states of the Western world. It is historically the first modern state and it is actually really effective in comparison with other countries. But we also tend to have a tradition of harsh criticism about it and self-derision. I think my favourite part of this is while it is a great sendup of beurocracy gone up its own arse, is how it genuinely adheres to the format of a greek/roman myth.
The heroes need a thing. They must go to a place that is out of the ordinary to obtain it. They find themselves stymied by the nature of this place and all their strength and power are of no use. But then they manage to turn the challenges nature on itself in order to triumph, and they leave sucessful, if only inadvertently.
Not just satarizing one thing, not just two, but having those two subjects play off each other in order to make it work. Either a greek hero's task being dealing with beurocracy, or beurocracy bneing on the level of a greek hero's task. Fantastic writing.

I didn't notice that, cool. Also I like how we see all the mad townsfolk first, showing that this is an institution, something that everyone has to deal with, and not something cooked up just for the challenge, like how one of hercule's labors was cleaing out these stables that were filthy after years of neglect, it was an existing problem. It also means that the romans are also doing this sort of thing to themselves on the regular, at least in that town.

Nah. In actual bureaucracy, there are at least twenty people in a queue in front of each window, and fifteen minutes after joining the queue the same person who was at the front is still standing there. Also applies to any pharmacy - no bureaucracy needed, still a mere five people take about an hour to get served, unless there are any retired folks among them because then it's FIVE hours.

I experienced it as a kid, with mum and dad and later as a teenager when attempting to update my I.D. What made it worse is that a lot of people at the top got their positions from their 'friendly attitudes' towards the fascist states and not due to any form of competence or knowledge. I imagine it would have been the same throughout Asia, Africa, Italy, Spain and Germany, hence why this skit would ring so universal. Forms were usually type-written in triplicate and required stamping by different departments none in the same building or across town, none of which spoke to each other.
