How accurate are political polls during election years?

Polls are often used to provide voters with a snapshot of what the electorate is thinking or feeling at a particular time; however, they have begun to develop a reputation among Americans for possibly being inaccurate.
While they are not an exact science, political polls become especially popular during election years and typically aim to model what voter turnout may look like in the future.
