It's entirely a gag, he's very in control of himself. For example, he really wants to avoid being mean to Aisling, so he initially skips insulting her when he insults everyone else (even Noel), and then when she tries to insert herself into the gag, he diverts with "I can't hear you, the blood's in my ears" so he doesn't have to interact with her in a rude manner.
Ayoade's rant is my favorite moment from big fat quiz ever. I don't think it's a genuine meltdown but it certainly stems from personal experience. That he can seamlessly make it such a genuine expression of that while being hilarious is his comic genius. Love his work.
For me it wasn't the facial expressions. I wasn't bullied in high school at all, but I could fake my way through a bit. For me it was his intonation, the fact that he ended each sentence in an upward tone like he was bragging, and the fact that he said he ate a load of amazing sweets "that you didn't see because I was in the bathroom". That's what turned me to be like "oh he's been through that before".
Oh I was bullied badly, and not just in high school. He was very real to me. His bit was really my voice and my outrage, like being pushed just a little too far and losing it. The only part he missed was all the crying that comes when the shouting is done, and that goes on for a long time. I don't think I've ever seen anyone portray a bullying victim so realistically. We don't all show up the next day with an AR15. Some of us just hurt.
Richard ticking off was the best part!! And Noel saying he was there in his 18th bday aawww :D Richard said he worked hard in the morning to prepare "our treats" yahaha the beginnings of The Ayoades ♥
Thanks Richard. You just reminded me that I still have most of a giant bag of Maltesers left over from Chrissie ... Now I just need a coffee and I'm set for the afternoon.
I absolutely love the mariachi part because that’s literally what they do, they go to your table and play so loud you can barely hear yourself think and it’s amazing
I've seen this episode many times and loved it, but for some reason this time I suddenly thought, "What if Richard isn't acting and really *is* losing it here?" And to top it off, we're all laughing about it...
Adam Buxton is not wrong, Cillian Murphy bears a remarkable resemblance to young Charlie Chaplin. Now I would like to see Cillian with that moustache and a bowler hat, I think we would all be quite shocked with the result.
Seeing Jimmy become concerned and genuinely assuring Rob that he had cleaned his hands before touching his jacket was a nice little reminder that unfortunately Jimmy isn't as big of an asshole as he'd like us all to believe
Oh get over yourselves. If the Brits were known from their comments it would be for being unduly patronising to Americans considering how rubbish your country is these days, if not as ever.
Skin is not an organ. It's an organ system (like the nervous system or the digestive system). Its technical name is the integumentary system. It includes many organs, such as glands, follicles, and nails. The skin is not an organ, even though this trivia question comes up all the time. I used and reviewed about 20 textbooks while I taught anatomy. They all call it a system, not an organ.
First they brought "Whose Line", now they're bringing "Would I Lie to You". They really need to consider the "Big Fat Quiz". I just don't think America is ready for it. I am tho. 😊
I don't think we have enough good comedians that can "take the piss" out of someone but not let it get personal and offended. Although Kristen Schaal is great in this. Need to be good at improv too. Steve Carell. I should say we don't have ENOUGH comedians to have variety.
Woah that's weird, as Richard said as if I had an 18th birthday party I thought well I won't cos of Covid and then he said I was in Lockdown! Bit freaky...
2016 - four eps in total: the 2016 special (first), then the 2016 series (three eps). Noel and Richard were together in the Special and this one - Ep. 2, then Noel was with Eddie Izzard in Ep. 3.
Just a fun fact: In America we call that a thermos what Richard is drinking from. A flask(to us in America) is one of those metal, flat, sometimes curved but always thin containers.
I think that flask just means a bottle. It's called a thermos in the UK, but they're not allowed to call it that on the BBC. Calling it a Thermos is like calling a vacuum cleaner a Hoover. Everyone knows what you mean but the word is just a brand name. You can still call it a Hoover or a Thermos if it is made by a different company, but you can't call it that on publicly funded TV because it amounts to free advertising.
We tend to turn brand names into common nouns - Thermos for insulated beverage containers, Scotch tape for household cello tape, Rollerblades for inline skates, etc. The power of advertising, I suppose.
Thank you! I thought the same. And what’s with the whistling? I’ve been “serenaded” by mariachis many times, and none have ever made such terrible noises.

The rage from 17:40 to about 22:30 is the most exquisite piece of either a fantastic gag or genuine anger I've ever seen
Bit of both?
Fantastic gag from real pain/experience. Rob and Aisling seem like wonderful ppl who didn't want to genuinely hurt his feelings.

And the reaction of Adam was exactly right, for the part that was real.
You’re very eloquent, Barbara, and you hit the nail on the head.
Love at the end, c when he's like I don't know how to come down off this energy! I've def done the same when acting up being mad at board games

I love Richards rant but why is no one talking about the comedic timing of Adam Buxton’s “Sargent Pooper’s Lonely Farts Club Band”

I love how Rob ended up on two different teams with the same name in two different BFQs.
He was on one of the new ones that premiered in the last few weeks and used the name again.
But he's tits in ones and teeth in the other. Important distinction. :P

The Love Shack wasn't in Atlanta, neither in real life nor in the song . It was in Athens, Georgia... on the Atlanta Highway (HWY 78).
Aisling is like the European Zooey Deshunel. Please excuse the spelling! Love them both and this whole cast!
you were pretty close: It's spelled Deschanel.

Zooey is definitely an acquired taste. Her character on “New Girl” annoyed me to the point of blind rage, though.

The mariachi part reminded me of a Travel Man episode with musicians in a restaurant; I think Aisling was the guest.

"Dry your chocolate eyes." - Richard Ayoade
Sean Evans of Hot Ones on BFQ? Cool, too bad he didn't get recognition.
