- Are you concerned your child has Autism? Is your toddler producing Echolalia, or repeating things you say, rather than forming a response? This video will teach you 5 strategies you can incorporate in your home, to supplement services you are hopefully receiving from a Speech Pathologist. These strategies are not an all-inclusive list, and keep in mind, results will vary from child to child. Also, remember that progress may be slow-- Don't get discouraged!

Remember folks, echolalia is still a way of communicating for many children! As long as they can express their wants, needs, and feelings, even in a nontypical way, that's good! Do your best to learn how they communicate, and work with them so you can both understand each other.
This is what parents should be putting their energy into: learning to communicate and understand their children, accepting them for how they are; not molding them into something “normal” (whatever that means) and unnatural to them, which is what causes trauma in the long term.
I’m an autistic adult and proud of my echolalia, palilalia, and verbal stimming. No one has ever been harmed as a result of me having these traits, not even myself. Being bullied and rejected, and suppressing my nature, trying to be something I’m not- that’s what’s harmed me.
Autistic people don’t need to change. They need to be accepted.

Thanks, I have watched videos of a speech therapist says, echolalia in some toddler do it when they don’t understand or don’t know what to say, so instead they repeat what you say. Repeating words are how they learn from it, but if it’s goes on..until they reach the age where they should be talking accordingly, that’s where you have to be alarmed specially if they can talk.

I believe many parents and caretakers of autistic youths think that the harm is when a child can't answer whether or not they have a stomach ache and it turns out be appendicitis or when stimming gets them tackled by school security or the police who don't understand their behavior. Safety is a big reason parents want they're children to conform to some degree. Parents can't make the world any less cruel than it is, they can only prepare their children to navigate it.
After reading about gestalt language processing, I realized how special echolalia is. They’re processing the whole of the sentence instead of word for word.

My son is 4yo and he is able to absorb a lot from nursery rhymes, educational videos, etc. He is able to answer questions like what is this, but if it's something like "what's your name?", it depends if he is "in the mood". He is bright - he counts independently up to 110, identify colors even turquoise and magenta, and he can read (not just sight read) by really trying each syllable. I am hoping he develops independent speech soon. He is about to start school soon and I am not sure if I should have him checked for ASD first or not. From what I can see he really is just very shy. He was just over 18mos when COVID lockdowns started. I have since made him a channel to document his progress - LittleSavie
Same as my son. He is 4yo too. Can talk but won’t engage into a normal conversation. And won’t answer yes or no. He’ll be seeing a speech therapist soon. Hoping this would help him for a better communication.

You should make an appointment with a neuropsychologist today. TODAY. Except for the not reading*, he sounds a lot like me. I was 44 when I finally got diagnosed as Autistic. Having it done at 4 would have saved me a lifetime of confusion and frustration.
*I'm hyperlexic and was a precocious reader.
@@llamalluvv He's been diagnosed with mild ASD. He's doing occupational therapy now so he can adjust better and be ready for speech therapy/school. He's grown a lot since the start of therapy (August) and he's slowly adjusting to school now. Also recently found out he is very artistic.
You have just described my son. We are currently doing the Hanen "More than Words" program and may enroll him in speech therapy afterwards. we also have a diagnosis appointment coming up. I'm trying to learn and understand as much as i can so that i can help him (learn to) communicate.

My about to be 4 years old cousin speaks very well, he can sing songs, count to 100, say all the colours. But it appears he can only repeat, he learns phrases spoken to him by heart and he repeats them. He can even memorise 10 pages children book and recite it, but he couldn’t answer questions like “What are you eating?” “What are you doing?”. Once his mother asked him and taught him what he was eating, named the dishes, he proceeded to memorise that and told us all memorised phrases when we asked him “What are you eating?” again. Just asking “What did you talk with your caretaker today?” would cause him a lot of distress he would start crying.
He has extremely good memories, but struggles to describe things around him by himself
It is the same problem with my son.

This video was very enlightening to me but it also makes me think how silly it is that all the therapy sessions my son gets are always one to one when that obviously makes it very difficult to work on very important concepts like questioning/answering, you/me, etc. I really think he could be progressing much faster. Thankfully now i know better and will ask them why they don't ever work in this kind of way.
Unfortunately, universities don’t touch on these tips for SLPs/SLPAs, they have us learn primarily through research AFTER finishing coursework. It’s very unorganized in my opinion. I truly didn’t learn these types of strategies until I started actually WORKING in the field and even 2 years in i’m STILL learning. Maybe the universities need to start implementing more coursework in Speech instead of non-related courses like history, math, etc.

My daughter is very smart. Learn to say her ABC from she was 1+ and also learn to count to 10 at that age. Now she just turned 3, knows her shapes, all colors, animals etc but I am so worried about her speech/echolalia.

6:55 I have heard this example a few times now, to give the answer to question yourself and then wait for a child to give that same answer himself/herself. I'm wondering, isn't that just another form of echolalia as well, because the child is simply repeating the "answer" it heard form a parent, regardless of it's actual desire (in this case, to go outside or not...)?
My sons slp says it helps children understand because the answer is showing them the subject/idea behind the meaning of questions
My child clearly expresses his needs like i want to drink milk or i want toys etc only when i ask anything eg how was school or are you playing he repeats it and he even remembers what we spoke to him few days ago and repeats it. He is hyperactive and interacts well so i dont know if he is on autism spectrum???

My 32 months old does this when i ask him a complex question or sometimes not very complex and the answer could he I don’t know. so instead of saying I don’t know he would just repeat the question. he does find with choice questions and a yes or no question and the questions for which knows the answer at the top of his head. Should i be worried.

Hi, please suggest about 7.5 years old son, who started his first word at 7, and now he is doing echolalia, but he can sing children rhymes at turn, like if I say twinkle twinkle, he will reply little star, and so on. Similarly he can speak all alphabets in turn and like wise counting. From your video, to my understand, he is facing receptive and expressive language development issue. Like if I point him to switch off the TV, he will understand the direction only, and not about TV. What is this?? Please suggest how to keep him involve in understand language . I came across your video. My child is about to be 2 years old and he hasn’t say no words just mumble “mama” but mostly “papa” but that is it . I was searching for ways to help him what are some good strategies to help him

My son is 5 years old and I'm afraid he has echolalia .reason being is when I ask him something he repeats the question rather than him giving me a response. I always have taken him too he's yearly check up with he's pediatrician and have asked about it and she says my child doesn't seem too have autism . I don't know how too help my child with it .please help

Echolalia can be a form of stimming and stimming is so important for the mental health of those doing it. Please don’t suppress stimming. Please don’t teach children to suppress their stims.

My daughter has tuberous sclerosis complex she had sezuires for over a year now controlled. She used to just make sounds but lately has been copying words that my other children say well sentences while there speaking to me also sings twinkle twinkle little star with the tune but different words like babbling she’s going to be 3 years old I’m April how can I help her talk please?
How to help a child that shows ecolalia intensively during bed time? It seems a hyperactivity of the brain, where the child is processing information through the day ( or days) repeating words associated to the day routine, preferable toys, transporters or iPad cartoons. Thanks for helping!
The child in question is probably reviewing her day because autistic people don't prcieve time the same way. Reviewing the day helps both to process wht has happened, self-sooth and pepare for tomorrow so there isn't anything unpredictable. It also is probably to help understand continuity of time, since many autistic people hyperfixate on the past, present or future and might have a hard time connecting events linnearly
My two year old does this. I googled Echolalia and now I'm scared. She repeats questions and parts of movies and songs on UA-cam videos she likes. So when I offer her water or milk and she repeats "Do you want milk?" and reaches for the milk do I not give it to her until she says, "I want milk." If I say that she will copy it, but I don't think she gets the different between "Do you want milk" and "I want milk" - to her they both get across that she wants milk. What about copying and acting out videos or parts of movies? I talked to her doctor, and she said not to worry because it's normal for two year olds and she doesn't have any other signs. But she copies/repeats shows so often.
My daughter did this until she was three now she talks nonstop but talk to your pediatrician if you’re worried

Often with echolalia, repeating things from tv shows or videos is called scripting! Its your child's way of communicating if they have trouble coming up with what to say organically. Its very common, and as long as your child is able to communicate their needs and thoughts, its not a major cause for concern.

What about if they are a Gestalt Learner?? Why would you try to stop they way are learning language? Not all kids are analytic speech learners and most ASD are not...

My son had hearing issues and he is speech delayed, he is now 4 years old and the last 6 month his speech has blossomed! From 10 words, we went to over a 100. The issue is, he has echolalia… he also has spontaneous speech though, and sometimes he actually answers the question after he repeats it… does this sound like expressive language delay?
Echoing other comments, echolalia is a different way of processing language, and analytical processing is not the only way :)
My daughter is repeating tv shows constantly. Not just a sentence or 2, it’s almost entire half hour episodes, every line. Like reading every persons lines in a script. It’s to the point that it’s driving everyone in our house crazy. It’s been going on for about 8 months now. Any tips to get her to stop?

She is still doing it some, but much much less now. It’s not driving us absolutely insane anymore. And if we ask her to stop she will now.
This is what our specialist has termed "scripting".. my 4 year old does this too. As for getting them to stop, that is something I also wish too.
My child knows mum and dad but doesn't address is as so unless it's part of a song and not unprompted.. I am extremely sad and would love to hear him say it.. he's said it only a couple of times.

Is repeating normal up to an extent and age and how children learn how to speak? My son just turned 2 1/2 and his preschool teacher said on his last assessment he repeats questions rather than answer them...your video was very helpful for some ways to work on this. He has no signs of autism or speech delays. What age do you think this is actually problematic and not part of learning?

As you are calling around, ask clinics if they have therapists who have studied this tx modality-- I think it would be AWESOME!! What if ur child keeps repeating questions of his own? Like, did u eat lunch? Did u eat dinner? Do u like my shirt? Asking people around him to ask him a questions the same thing over and over. Is that echolalia also?
Hello! And sorry for my delayed response! This can be a form of echolalia - more "delayed" echolalia. One suggestion I would make is to look at the number of questions you are asking your kiddo in a day. Perhaps, you are asking a lot of questions? Perhaps try to just model statements - often times our kiddos mirror back to us what we are putting out to them! If all they hear is questions - they may only have questions to speak back. I would also encourage formal speech therapy. In that therapy, I would also encourage exploration of AAC as soon as possible, to provide a wide range of language input & output. Just some thoughts - Let me know how things are going!
I just tried this with saying hi and after a few tries my kids is saying hi to me and not repeating my hi to him!

My son is like 4.4 yrs and he still did not speak. I took him to multiple specialist and they say he is NOT autistic.
I am very frustrated as he show echolalia and it seems that he don't understand the concept of communication.. just recently he an say his name . However, I feel that he is doing it as memory reply and a receipt and answers..

Hi there! Thanks for commenting! She may just need a little bit more time to process your questions. It is really hard to make a prognosis based on not having seen her in person. And, she is still very young. Do you have her in speech therapy currently?

@@watahtechnology2950 that's great news! Maybe ask your speech therapist for some other ideas about her repetitions - see if your therapist could recommend some other strategies, or even some other communication options, like pictures or gestures/signs to help her communicate.

Our 5 year old autistic son has a tendency to use echolalia (And palalia) quite a bit. Sometimes it's immediate and other times it is quite delayed. The other day he heard a video and it said *Oh my God, it's Mr. Peabody and Sherman!* Well, for the next three hours (With just a few breaks) he kept repeating it over and over again. At one time I thought he was going to quit for good, and when he restarted again I made the mistake of saying *Oh, sh*t*. Well, then he started saying the Peabody and Sherman line followed by the Oh Sh*t line right after it. Luckily, we didn't have to go anywhere that day.

I have a granddaughter who displayed echolalia when she was 3. I heard what other kids, in her class talked about. She repeated phrases from cartoons. That phase ended quite quickly. Now she repeats word endings, not complete words. It’s kind of a reverse stutter. ie. “Let’s play ay ay ay.“ She’s 8 now and it’s been going on about 6 months.
I’m going to try a variation of your therapy to help her. Let me know if there are other tips.

Hi, Wendy! Thanks for your comment/question! Echolalia does not ALWAYS mean Autism. For some kiddos with language delay, it can be a place-holder, to either give them time to process what has been said, or give them time to formulate their answer. I need more advanced conversation skills. I’ve had him watch videos about somebody talking about a ball game and the girl being totally off topic that she is getting pizza. And, he fixated on pizza.
I would alway advocate following the child's lead! If he's interested in pizza - go for it! Showing him you're interested in communicating w/ him could open up to future expansion of topics. When he's ready!

Hello, befin using external regulation of emotion until its internalised. You will refain normal neurotransmitter levels. Fix fhd srimulation problems. Do the work and he autistic will gain any practice until internalized! You are alrady perfect, you beautiful, you are able to gain facial composure and be able fo use normal expressions. I have my soul broken to pieces for this ideas on nurturing kids, please think about it for a little, does this forced masking and systematic deleting of any autistic trait/behaviour/stim... does it benefit her/him/elle at core level? For instance it is like saying “please honey, don’t be you again” , for you, it will be exhausting and demanding for the won’t go easily and freely, for your kid it will be devastating in the long run starting with the very early idea that something may be wrong with one being one self and it must be hidden! Even Some “generous” parents “let” SOME unbreakable traits be, as long it happens in private and as a “no see, no tell” kind of secrecy, please be empathetic, as NeuroTypicals tend to think of autists as non empathic inward creatures, which is not the case by a far margin, please do not try to “remodel” a brain by your standards (or limitations 😢) , please forget and just quit altogether all that dreaded conversion cohersitive therapy- which leads to deep rooted very in-warded, self-hidden,shameful and very painful, again sub conscient life long trauma. Are used to have echolalia but I got through it I had speech therapy for eight years but I was communication therapy mostly in a little bit of behavioral therapy
