  • The Boeing 717 is the last descendant
of the Douglas DC-9 still in passenger
    service in the United States.
Developed as the MD-95, its original name before
the Boeing/McDonnell Douglas merger in 1997,
the 717 is essentially an upgrade of the DC-9-30. It’s officially called the 717-200 in part because
the original “717" nameplate belonged to the
KC-135 and C-135 military aircraft, used internally at Boeing. Variants including a stretched -300 and a shrunken
-100 were considered, but ultimately cancelled due to
slow sales of the -200 and conflicts with the 737. The Boeing 717 is seldom nicknamed the “Angry Puppy,”
based on the “Mad Dog” moniker for its larger MD-80 siblings.
The DC-9 and its descendants are known for their
detachable tail cones-part of the evacuation system-
which are behind a door in the aft cabin. The 717 itself measures 124 ft / 38 m in length and 30 ft / 9 m high, with a
    93 ft / 28 m wingspan and weighing about 68,500 lb / 31,100 kg empty. Boeing produced 156 frames from 1998 to 2006,
with more than 100 still in service for Delta Air Lines,
    Hawaiian Airlines and QantasLink.
Delta acquired 88 717s from Southwest Airlines
after their purchase of AirTrain Airways in 2011; per DL, they're currently used to connect
the major hubs with the midsized markets in their network. Originally slated for retirement in 2025, the airline allegedly plans to keep
their 717s for at least another decade due to A220 delivery delays. But they have not officially confirmed or denied this.

This is quite an interesting and informative take on your planespotting video! I was fortunate enough to fly on that Delta B717 last year; it was quite of an experience to fly on one of their oldest McDonnell Douglas jets.
