That's exactly what my real pedal chain looks like for that tone comp-eq-trichorus-delay-reverb. starting at chorus everything is true stereo with slight detune with chorus
It's very interesting that you are showing this, because it's not really well known anymore. This style of guitar playing in the 80s, came from a combo of 70's funk and also rhythm and blues. In fact most chord progressions were played in two note chords (only two string) not just like power chords but also the majority of the song... like blues double stop over synth tracks. Back when I started writing music in 1984, I actually played guitar with mainly the effects you are showing for the 80's genre of Pop or New Wave at that time (some people call it now retro-wave or synth-wave, for modern songs that are being made in that genre of music). A few other tips... Some times just light "reverb" would be (and can be) used instead of delay. Also instead of "chorus", both effects (which most DAW's have plugins for nowadays) were "flanger" and also "phase" (and they both also sound different). Good luck to you in 2019, happy new year.
I’ve been looking for a sound like this for forever!! Thank you so much! This is the only video I found helpful in achieving this sound! Thank you thank you thank you
That was really useful ,this is a sound I like to use (I have a TC electronics corona with a tri chorus tone print and a boss se50) I wondered if I cou”d do it all with the built in stuff though as it looks really complicated to use send and return with my outboard fix and I’m completely new to logic and recording . I want to get my fave 80s studio sounds like lukather,Jay Graydon and Landau etc
Awesome Tutorial Patrick!!! Very informative, and you explain it so well with lots of detail it just saved me to create a masterpiece I'm working on! Thank you so much!
bro i love your channel. serious! it's beautiful how you talk. you make everything sound so interesting and keep it so simple, but effective. keep it up! love your content !!
Hey patrick, loving your videos, they are great and very informative,i love the sound of the track you play at the beginning at 00:17, is there a longer version anywhere at all and also where could i look for backing tracks that sound like that?, or there any chance you could show us how it was made it sounds beautiful, thanks alot for making these helpful videos 😁
Awesome video man, thanks for your help. I'm always interested when I see yet another way someone plays the chords for Purple Rain; so far, I've seen about 5 different ways people play the song!
Great video! Another really great (imho) affordable saturation plugin that I can highly recommend is Klanghelm's SDRR. Just throwing it out there for peeps who might not know about it.
great sounds thank you, that s what we talking about great sounds, 80s funk soul, show us more sounds thanks for your help, im a disco funk producer on logic- Algeriafunk
Hey man great guitar playing I do a lot of mixing and recording tips on my channel so if you need any tips I got them also great job making music and playing guitar keep it up and keep making great music
Super cool tut for a super newbie like me. Would love to see an attempt at getting that sound (or close) with just the pedalboard and amp in Logic. Just for shits and Giggs!
hey dude this is dope - would you do a tutorial on doing this with JUST stock plugins? like even the stock 'classic clean' guitar in Logic? That'd be sick
Hey there- All of the plugins I've used in this video are stock with the exception of the Decapitator from Soundtoys. This plugin was meant to be a sort of "Bonus" to just add a little something extra to the sound. It is not necessary that you use this plugin in the chain of effects. Sorry if that wasn't clear in the video! Also, I have another video on the way which will be a more generic look at recording DI guitar and what plugins to use. Hopefully that will help you! Thanks for your comment, my friend.
Is there anything in Logic Pro X that gives you a Gibson Humbucker tone------Thats a very broad question, I understand. I have a Strat that has the lace sensor pick ups. Most of the time I love it. I guess its a matter of going into amp settings?
I have Logic Pro 10.3.3 and I can’t do the updates because my laptop is old(2008). DoI still have have a chance to have this kind of retro clean sound? I have izotop too. Plz help!
Alfie Proctor you can do that yes, if you don’t have an interface to use as a preamp you could instead before the guitar plug-ins add an amp and set it to clean and direct to act as a preamp which could improve the sound. Hope you find this helpful :)
@@morgancheadleofficial Thanks that does help. Didn't want to gamble on this being a solution, but the more I hear the more it seems like a good option, thanks
Is there a way to have the guitar track and the effects themselves in stereo rather than mono? Every time I add a new effect in the chain it doesn’t give an option to be in stereo. Only mono. Is there a reason for this? To my ears it sounds better in stereo.
Thanks for the comment my friend, appreciate it! None of us have a lot of resources when we are starting out, I certainly didn't, it's a gradual process. Try not be discouraged by all the equipment, start small and start where you can. It's easy to think that it's so much easier for someone who has the studio and equipment that I have, but I've been building to this for ever a decade! Furthermore, if you go back and watch some of my videos from last year you can see just how minimal my studio was a very short time ago. If you have a passion for music and the art of production GO FOR IT!
that 80s sound never gets old, always sounds great and is excellent in a band mix too
Wow that opening track is fire! 00:17
That's exactly what my real pedal chain looks like for that tone comp-eq-trichorus-delay-reverb. starting at chorus everything is true stereo with slight detune with chorus
All of that for a climatic “purple rain”, love it

Mr Tom I know this is an old comment, but can you elaborate on those two string chord structures more? Difficult to find information like that.
purple rain! good pick lol
Thank you my friend! nice ear!
It literally showcases this tone lol
Purple Rain gives me goosebumps ❤️
King's Tone is the best preset imo. It's even better when you split it into two amp signals and then switch the mic on one of them to a ribbon mic.
I’ve been looking for a sound like this for forever!! Thank you so much! This is the only video I found helpful in achieving this sound! Thank you thank you thank you
Big love for this Patrick you have helped me get the exact sort of tone i was after
Yup. That sounds awesome.

Excellent , I can dial this kind of tone in on my Boss GT1 but was wondering how to approach using Logic . Cheers
Thanks Mr.! Super helpful.
That purple rain tho 🔥
This helps. Thank you Patrick
Just what I was looking for
Thanks a lot

Thanks!
Great guitar sound man

So useful man thank you!
You need to drop that opening track ASAP

This was awesome. Now I just need to tweak it a ton so I can sound like The Night Game.
Nice!
Thank you so much :)
Would be amazing if you could save and upload the track setting
What genre is this called ? I just know it as 80s soft rock
No offense but I didn't hav big expectations but man that sounds super 80s!

Patrick Breen blessss big love bro
You can you the free saturation knob from Softtube instead of Decapitator.
Congrats! Great video! Which model is your strat? I have a Fender Deluxe Player's Strat in Swamp Ash with Seymour Duncan SSL-1s and SSL-5 (bridge).
Patrick Breen Will logic give me a better guitar tone than bias fx, and guitar rig 5?
That was rad, dude! Have you ever tried to get a lead tone like Vai?
Please can you show how to use ample guitar Martin in citypop type
You are the best bro!!!
EMBI No YOU are!!
Super dope 🔥💯👍
Thanks bro! Appreciate that!
This has helped me out so much for my next cover!!! Keep an eye out for it on my youtube and thank you!!!
thank you Patrick... :))
I love it :-). More more more ahhh ha ha.

How to find Soundtoys plugin????
Buy them
Hi Patrick, great video. Just a few questions.
What is usually your optimum input level?
Is that with the plugin activated or just guitar only?
Gold man. Lol thanks
Do you know if it’s possible to do something similar to this in garage band?
will you ever do a video on how you mix and master your music? :)
is there like a pedal u could use not mutiple i dont have so i can use my pc i only have a champion 20 fender amp
Absolutly amazing
Thanks a lot for the video. Any idea for getting the backing track you re using at the begining of the video?thank you
I can get that 80s tone on my strat. But I would like to find a guitar i can get the 80s tone but just a darker sound.
Can I plug my guitar straight into my Mac and use the virtual amps, then output it through a speaker? Does this sound any good?
Alfie Proctor you can do that yes, if you don’t have an interface to use as a preamp you could instead before the guitar plug-ins add an amp and set it to clean and direct to act as a preamp which could improve the sound. Hope you find this helpful :)
@@morgancheadleofficial Thanks that does help. Didn't want to gamble on this being a solution, but the more I hear the more it seems like a good option, thanks
What model Strat are you using?
Which device do you recommend between the guitar and comp?

Where is the modulation?
I hear it.
Heck yeah reminds me of something john mayer would use!
Where do you get the backing tracks or templates for Logic X?
How did you play the guitar on logic like how did you hook it up pat
I think you forgot to turn off auto release on the compressor
Just discovered this channel. Loving your videos. I'm a guitarist thinking about starting with music production. I don't have much money though...

What did you have the volume and tone controls of your Strat set too?
Well done!
Bruno Mars. Please
I can get into that bro 🥁🤖
check christian larsen
Nice tones for clean. But tones for lead, tones like rockman soloist ?
Clicked when i saw 80's. Tasteful video
that plug in is 200$
dude you skipped to fast over how to get the saturation...
Decapitator is a saturation plugin.
