Incandescent to LED Trailer Tail Light Mod to Keep OEM Lens Assembly

- In this video, I take a new set of LED trailer tail lights and tear them apart to cannibalize the LED light panels from them. Then with a few mounting and wiring modifications, I installed the LED panels into my existing OEM incandescent tail lights.
The mod is because my OEM lens is much bigger than any of the LED replacement assemblies I could source. I wanted to keep them for looks. Works well and has substantially increased brightness and signal visibility.

I wish your video was out a week ago. I just purchased some LED bulbs for my trailer and they didn’t work very well. I will try your conversion. Great video!
Looks great. I think even the license plate light upgrade will help get you noticed at night.

Nice mod ray I also converted all my lights to led I purchased mine at Fraserway rv with reverse they were pretty reasonably priced thanks
I’ve been having the same issue. All the LED lights have a smaller foot print. I found a set on sale at princess auto for $25. I’ll be using your method. Thanks for sharing.
Great mod Ray. I just used a replacement led bulb. Seems to work well & is way brighter than the incandescent bulb. Maybe next year I'll upgrade.
hello from Windsor Ontario. By far the coolest LED upgrade I have seen. I have a Hybrid trailer and the tail lights have a rounded bottom so no LED lights would fit without modifying the housing.. This idea allows me to keep the curved bases.. Thank you. I clicked subscribe to see the other great ideas.

Yeah, a little bead should do the trick once I'm sure everything is working well.
I have a stick on led light bar thingy on the back of my van and it plugs in the trailer flat 4 pin connector it's a good setup for 29.00 bucks at Walmart

Nice work. Have you thought about adding a high-level brake light in the center?
Haven't thought about it. It would have to be really high to be above the window. Could be a chore to try and fish the brake wire up there.

@1:53 the incandescent bulb looks very dim, like a low voltage issue. Where are the bulb/holder assemblies from the upper half? Where they not installed from the beginning? Maybe you left that part out. I only see two wires to the incan bulb but you show three which you would need for tail/turn to the led. Used to be federal guidelines on exterior lighting. Older vehicles benefit from led upgrades but you may have signal issues as not enough current draw to flasher.
There never was anything installed in the upper half. Here is a past video where I replace the OEM assemblies with new - ua-cam.com/video/vEYYQyMNFFs/v-deo.html The third wire was attached to the metal bracket that held the incandescent bulb. It was the ground return. No signal issues since my 2018 truck uses a electronic flasher module suitable for LED bulbs vs the old mechanical ones. Cheers, Ray

Do you think you can add a translucent diffuser between the leds and the lens?
Could do, but in real life they are acceptable as good or better than the OEM bulb and way brighter. Cheers, Ray
