Not his fault they are designed so well 😅 I mean they also stand out in the sense I feel like "scan" characters weren't really their own entire class till Apex. It was more of just one part in a characters kit
In my opinion I think Soldier from TF2 is the pinnacle of character design in a class base shooter. He’s easy to learn and VERY hard to master with getting kills, air shots, and the infamous rocket jumping that has a HUGE skill ceiling. Not to mention he’s a really goofy character that has so much personality and had such an amazing voice actor. Rest in Peace, RICK MAY.

Nano boost and sleep are some of the best designed abilities in overwatch. Also Imgangi (I think thats how you spell her name) atleast needed a mention for paladins. I mean it's not a hero shooter but Sharla from Xenoblade Chronicles (which came out in 2006) is a sniper healer, hell even Sharla and young Ana look a tad similar but that's most likely a coincidence.
Actually Medic in tf2 has a healing crossbow that has incredibly long range. Pretty sure Ana took inspiration from the crossbow and made it a full character. From a guy that plays both games.
Honestly, I think you missed out on Junkrat in Overwatch. Junkrat whole character is a loose, lowkey crazy, wacky guy, So his kit matches it. He has a barely working grenade launcher that has loose bolts and the grenades flop around in the mag matching his loose, crazy personality. He is like a crack head and some of his voice lines show it. For example; when you put a mine down he says that he itches to blow it up. And his walk show how he is twitchy and has a peg leg, and you can see how fast he breathes by the speed his launcher sways. This is just my opinion though, but I think he is designed really well character wise.
Honestly, Bloodhound being non-binary is done well because it's not in your face, nor is it a defining character trait. They're done perfectly. A good character who jusy so happens to be non-binary.
I honestly feel like a big reason inclusion gets more hate now is that it has gone from feeling like a "oh that's a nice thing of the devs to do" to feeling like "oh the suits up top wanted to boost a metric for investor calls", and I hate that it has become this
For Rivals I think the best designed is Loki. Having different illusion clones you can swap between, an invisibility and backstab melee, and an ultimate where you copy an ally or enemy, is so on brand for the character, and he feels really fun to play and mess with people.
I'm sorry but how does Zenyatta not even get an honorable mention? A sentient robot monk who fights by throwing hands, firing from a floating bead necklace and can summon spirit arms to look like a buddhist deity? I left overwatch years ago and I'm still regularily reminded of just how cool and unique he is. Respect for picking my boy Cypher though. I just watched your The Finals for Noobs video and I love how the dev team literally Improved EVERYTHING that you listed as critique. The most fun shooter out there currently.
I’ve notice I gravitate towards character wearing a masks or don’t really have humanoid features (there’s probably some psychological reason behind that) but also Apex immediately made me figure out what types of characters play style I like I mained in order from Bloodhound, Octane and Revenant so they all have some sort of face wear and all have a ability to rush down a team so Nightmare, Nightmare, Nightmare
As someone who has 2241 pics of Cyborg images saved in my Pinterest board, I see this as an absolute *WIN* I love Cybernetic ninjas and stuff He's *GOATED*
You know TF2 has the best design team behind it when it doesnt matter who Marco picks, everyone all agree because every character in TF2 is just so iconic
It’s very interesting to see that a lot of the best designed characters in your opinion happen to be my main in those games like genji, bloodhound, and cypher! That’s wild and also nice to see that I have good taste :D
i dont think bloodhound would face hate now because the world got worse, its just that all that shit is forced so hard now and people r sick of it. At the time of release it was interesting and new
I think the reason why Apex manage to introduce ''diverse'' characters is because they do not make a big deal out of it, compared to games like... *coughs*... Dragon Age : The Veilguard.
I actually played a fair amount of Rogue Company and let me say... while Glitch was a favorite, since you had to unlock him, I first hooked onto Dima. That robot mask with the russian voice and the grenade launcher was so sick

I personally think Lucio is the best well designed hero in overwatch. He is hands down one of the best and most well designed support hero’s in any hero shooter. he’s not just a character that sits there healing you he goes in with you but not only that he makes everyone go ZOOM. he shoots targets that his team shoots he heals his team just by being near them. he can peal for his teammates at the speed of light and boop the enemies away, and the most balanced and impact support ult in the game. it is the most expensive ult in the game but it is the most impactful in a fight. Not only that but he’s got the best movement of every character wall riding. they went all out making a support character that is not only helpful but fun at the same time. best hero and support character of all time. sorry medic
Yamato actually is 100% confirmed to be getting a new model. Here is left over from when she was straight up an Alien, when deadlock was a scifi game called NeonPrime
I think JunkerQueen in the best designed Overwatch Hero. While her lore is mostly surface level, you can tell she's a more complex person deep down from that snippet of her past in her animation. But other than that, I just have to hand it to the devs on making a tank of all classes that feeds into its hero fantasy perfectly and isn't broken or underwhelming. She's got a pension for mayhem and is a certified adrenaline junkie, so much so, clausing her opponents to bleed and slicing them open fills her with vigor that heals her. You can also see her tactical prowess shine through her abilities like knife throw, which is a swiss army knife of an ability despite it's simplicity, and shout, being a decisive tool that can turn tides when used at the proper time with good communication. We also say this tactical prowess in her animation and I'm glad it shines through in her gameplay. She's definitely a top 3 designed hero
My favorite part about tf2 is that every character has their own role meaning that one can be very weak compared to another but still be good. Meaning most of the balance discussion goes to the weapons
Yamato is good, actually. Her cartonish phallic head helps differentiate front the rest and does a bit of storytelling, too, showcasing an entity trying to mimic human likeness and getting it uncanny. I hope she stays as she is ! Preserve the yacubian princess!
I mean no disrespect to anyone who is nonbinary, but I simply don't see what gender has to do with character design, and I don't believe that should influence anyone's decision in deciding what the best character is. I do agree that bloodhound is absolutely the best designed in apex, I just don't understand why it matters that they're nonbinary.
Question: Is Rainbow 6 siege, any of the Borderlands, Warframe, and to a small extent Destiny not hero shooters? More of so to the first two but unless I'm mixing up game categories.
I main Cypher! And yes, he definitly knows way too much. He knows everything going on including Chamber and Omen's secrets (which are big mysteries). He's also iconic because on nearly every trailer there's a cypher dying or something similar, like a license plate saying DEDCYPHER on Harbor's intro.
“Very derivative” of characters they were developed at the same time as, who themselves several of were derivative of TF2 characters. Shockingly, when 2 teams try to expand on the same limited concept, their early efforts sometimes seem similar. We’ve seen it come full-circle with some of Overwatch’s newer kits resembling Paladins characters, and even one example where they released characters with visual similarity to their abilities despite development at the same time.
I’ll agree that Medic was the most influential on future game design. But what characters are iconic in tf2? Dumb question. They all are. But when you think of tf2 you’re probably thinking of heavy or scout. They’re all really well designed but nothing says “I am heavy weapons guy” than a huge Russian guy that is a tank, plays like a tank, and saying “I am Heavy Weapons Guy”. Heavy is peak character design.
yeah but hes really really boring, basic and underpowered in certain situations. not the most well designed class by a longshot medic wasnt all that influential beyond 1 hero in overwatch, most support design originates from mobas, as does everything in a hero shooter
My list of personal favorites (feel free to tell me how I’m wrong): OW: Junkrat Apex: Mirage Valorant: Gekko TF2: Spy (I love medic but spy is just too iconic) Deadlock: Dunno haven’t seen Rouge: Glitch (Been maining Glitch and Saint since Beta, gotta love em) Fragpunk: Dunno haven’t seen Marvel Rivals: Spider-Man Paladins: Dunno haven’t seen Concord: I have heard bad things so I dunno
thought it was going to be some video essay talking about a specific stereotype of a design in modern hero shooters that catches your attention but instead it was... this
I feel like for Marvel Rivals, Loki also deserves a mention. He's a support, and his kit is entirely focused on deception and trickery. And it... somehow works? Then again, every character in that game is peak character design (Black Panther, Star Lord, JEFF!!!), so by that standard, they'd all deserve a mention.
Honestly, for overwatch, I'd choose Sigma. Such a unique and very interesting character. A 60 year-old Dutch scientist that has gone mad and has gravitational powers. There's literally no other character like him, or atleast that of what I already know.
The game has been shut down for a year almost, but Gundam Evolution was my favourites hero shooter gameplay-wise. There are fans out there hosting private servers every now and then.
Bloodhound is perfection✨ I'm not too amazing on them but I love to play Fusehound with my husband because it feels like we're playing as ourselves identity-wise
True, probably if bloodhound was released later in the seasons there would be such an overreaction from bigots I think catalyst is an example of that, a transfem witch character? I remember a bunch of dudes being so mad at the trailer for that even though most of the characters in Apex are part of some minority, bunch of black characters, octane is disabled, Gibraltar is gay and maori, even bang is bi of lesbian idr, but catalyst got that overreaction because "suddenly respawn gone woke" Happy that the legend was just so good as a control character that the bigots just had to get along with it and the discourse just died out
it’s a really tough call for the tanks of overwatch for me zarya, winston, and rein are by far the most well designed tanks in overwatch. they all do their job and they are all so unique in their gameplay. A tank character is a frontline character that helps their team push forward and also has crowd control. even tho i think rein and zarya are amazing it’s got to go to winston. going in to keep the attention on him rather than his team providing a bubble barrier and the AOE shock damage perfectly complements dive character like GENJI.
I think from a gameplay point of view ana and lucio are the golden standard of overwatch. ana was the most played hero in overwatch 1 and lucio was the most played hero in the overwatch league. both of them shaped the way the game is played drastically. I genuinely think lucio is the best designed hero of all time. maybe not as iconic like tracer or genji, but much more impactful on the competitive scene.
I still think that Yagorath from Paladins is one of the boldest character designs in hero shooters. Having someone practically be a raid boss is something that can’t be found anywhere else.
4:30 Apex Legends put out a non-binary character that was well thought out and not shoved into peoples faces as a ploy for inclusivity. THATS why I and many others love bloodhound. I hate it when companies just become, "inclusive" as a tool to gain more money
For me Overwatch's best chatacter will always be Sombra. Gameplay aside, she's just so amazing. Being in villain's organization, but only for her own goals, so she often sabotages them. She still have friendships or can act friendly with good guys like Baptiste, Zen or basically anyone since we saw her have fun with Tracer, Kiriko, Brig and D.va. Also the way she talks, how she can manipulate people is just so amazing. On top of that her OW2 redesign is peak. And lore-wise she's like top 5 most powerful character, making invisible hacker for gameplay is stupid, but for story is just great.
for tf2 i think the spy might be the coolest design that somehow worked out and is fun to play. There's no character like him and can only exist in his game otherwise he'd be too broken/annoying/underpowered I also think loki is probably a better contender for fun to play as support in marvel rivals but they did rework him and based on his power fantasy he might be changed again so I think racoon was a good choice.
I honestly agree so much about Paladins, Bomb King is an all time iconic design over the game's lifespan, and I'm saying this as someone who used to pour over 1k of hours into Paladins.
i would like to see a sequel but instead talk about their gameplay design specifically. who’s gameplay design is absolutely flawless and perfectly fits their role. in overwatch rein, winston, and zarya are the definition of what tanks should be. for DPS i got genji, tracer, reaper, and cree they feel the most thought out and most well designed through their gameplay. not overwhelming broken but also not totally bad. for support i got lucio and ana. i think zen used to be on this list before he got all these changes but since he did i dont think he deserves to be here anymore. zen was originally designed to be a glass canon character but they added a bunch of things like the kick and more HP. then they nerfed discord orb to not reattach after 7 seconds. totally ruining his glass canon design for a more streamlined version of him that just isn’t as good. but ana and lucio are the best and most well designed support hero’s in all hero shooters they fit their roles perfectly.

medic wasnt all that influential beyond 1 hero in overwatch, most support design originates from mobas, as does everything in a hero shooter
is just me or you can also see a tesla torbeen on sevens head? it looks like those old things that produces energy late in the day, like 1600-1900
Loved this video idea! Would love to see this with platform fighters
bro wake up macro just uploaded 🔥
My list of personal favorites (feel free to tell me how I’m wrong):
OW: Junkrat
Apex: Mirage
Valorant: Gekko
TF2: Spy (I love medic but spy is just too iconic)
Deadlock: Dunno haven’t seen
Rouge: Glitch (Been maining Glitch and Saint since Beta, gotta love em)
Fragpunk: Dunno haven’t seen
Marvel Rivals: Spider-Man
Paladins: Dunno haven’t seen
Concord: I have heard bad things so I dunno
thought it was going to be some video essay talking about a specific stereotype of a design in modern hero shooters that catches your attention but instead it was... this
You mean this is bad? Idek how you could’ve gotten that from the title, it’s very straight forward. Good video.
@@betakh9267nah, its kinda mid
I feel like for Marvel Rivals, Loki also deserves a mention.
He's a support, and his kit is entirely focused on deception and trickery. And it... somehow works?
Then again, every character in that game is peak character design (Black Panther, Star Lord, JEFF!!!), so by that standard, they'd all deserve a mention.
Honestly, for overwatch, I'd choose Sigma. Such a unique and very interesting character. A 60 year-old Dutch scientist that has gone mad and has gravitational powers. There's literally no other character like him, or atleast that of what I already know.
I'm not even focused on the video at this point I'm focused on the absolute banger of an outro song
5:39 also your search history
12:24 bro caught me literally as I was typing about to say what about Paladins 😂😂
I never thought macro would mention Rouge company again 😅
The game has been shut down for a year almost, but Gundam Evolution was my favourites hero shooter gameplay-wise.
There are fans out there hosting private servers every now and then.
Hello Macro Im from Spain and your accent is so easy to understand and so clear, I like so much your videos
Bloodhound is perfection✨ I'm not too amazing on them but I love to play Fusehound with my husband because it feels like we're playing as ourselves identity-wise
Fun Fact: There is a visual glitch in Deadlock where Seven can remain as a glowing skeleton for the entire match.
winton good

Winton great

yeah i'm glad they released bloodhound earlier, clove's release in valorant was crazy.
True, probably if bloodhound was released later in the seasons there would be such an overreaction from bigots
I think catalyst is an example of that, a transfem witch character? I remember a bunch of dudes being so mad at the trailer for that even though most of the characters in Apex are part of some minority, bunch of black characters, octane is disabled, Gibraltar is gay and maori, even bang is bi of lesbian idr, but catalyst got that overreaction because "suddenly respawn gone woke"
Happy that the legend was just so good as a control character that the bigots just had to get along with it and the discourse just died out
it’s a really tough call for the tanks of overwatch for me zarya, winston, and rein are by far the most well designed tanks in overwatch. they all do their job and they are all so unique in their gameplay.
You have earned my subscription, hero shooters are fantastic and the more the merrier. All it takes is quality.
I still think that Yagorath from Paladins is one of the boldest character designs in hero shooters. Having someone practically be a raid boss is something that can’t be found anywhere else.
Speaking of Hero Shooters, Macro, are you going to play Marvel Rivals and make a video on it?
4:30 Apex Legends put out a non-binary character that was well thought out and not shoved into peoples faces as a ploy for inclusivity. THATS why I and many others love bloodhound. I hate it when companies just become, "inclusive" as a tool to gain more money
True
14:36 that huge blue dude on concord that i will never bother to remember the name of came to mind so fucking fast
Apex has ALOT of greatly designed characters, but out of all of em (plus no bias for my main) Alter has the best design
Fun fact: the title bloodhound can be earned and worn by anyone, which makes it just like spiderman
OW: Widowmaker
Apex: Loba
Street fighter: Cammy
Fortnite Chun Li
R6: Valkyrie
CoD: Valeria or Mara
Bayonetta: Bayonetta
I have to say this...why is sexuality an important thing? I never understood it. I feel like that is an unimportant detail tbh.
for tf2 i think the spy might be the coolest design that somehow worked out and is fun to play. There's no character like him and can only exist in his game otherwise he'd be too broken/annoying/underpowered
I also think loki is probably a better contender for fun to play as support in marvel rivals but they did rework him and based on his power fantasy he might be changed again so I think racoon was a good choice.
Battleborn has so many awesome designs lol
