Finally, someone comes & explains presets . I agree totally with you Tom & the fish story is the perfect way of explaining presets. Kudos to you young fella & you couldn't have done this video any better. I see presets as just another tiny tiny example of how the morals & principles of the values of how this great country was based on, are quickly being forgotten & sadly lost.
Thankyou for this honest video that will hopefully reach out & show people how to live with integrity & pride in everything we do. 👏👏

Thanks so much for your kind words and feedback. Yes I think having that pride in finishing your work is key to that special image. But also knowing the whole process will make you are better photographer

I totally agree. Presets, especially when purchased from a third party, are rarely helpful - unless you happen to shoot with the same 'picture profile' as the creator. Raw files between camera brands vary widely as do shooting styles. I've tried slapping presets on images and have never been happy. In fact my shooting style varies from job to job so I've never even bothered to create my own. Like you, if I have a series of images with the same exposure etc, I will copy the settings from one to another or even sync them if there are numerous. My general go to is to do an auto correct on all files, let Lightroom give me a starting point and then go from there. Nine times out of ten LR makes the same general corrections to exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows and blacks that I would have and, if it's wildly out of whack I just reset. And no, a preset can't duplicate the feeling you had when you shot - it gives you the feeling the creator had when they made it. Great topic and well presented. Thanks Tom.

Cheers Peter. Shortcuts rarely work out in the long run hey? and I do think that each shoot should be treated with a new perspective as you said, thanks for the comment and the encouragement

Great video Tom, I agree on buying presets. if you like someone's style then try and replicate it as you will learn more. There's a few youtube accounts that breakdown photographers styles (Maarten Schrader is one), and its worth have a watch of those (to see the impacts each of the sliders work) and how to analyse someone editing style. I make and use my own presets, when I have an edit or a style that I like I'lI create my own, and then for new photo's I can flick through as see which of my presets works best for a set of images. It's worth getting to grips with how to create your own to speed up your workflow and to help experiment with different styles, just treat them as a starting point, and adjust for each picture.

Why look like everyone else…? It’s like developing film you can take it to a processing place or develop it yourself.

Presets are a waste of time.
