  • We all breathe, but are you doing it correctly? When it comes to voiceover, breath control is essential for supporting your words, projecting your voice, and keeping things at a consistent volume all while avoiding the dreaded "catch breath." In this video I discuss how to breathe using your diaphragm as well as a few exercises to help develop muscle memory for breathing the right way.

Howdy! I’m having issues with my gut expanding but not my sides when I try the exercise (I’m able to not have my chest move) any tips on what I might be doing wrong?

Actually from what you’re describing it sounds like you’re doing it correctly! Your ribcage expanding outward plus your gut expanding fully inflates your lungs down to your diaphragm. It’s the chest moving that you want to try and avoid as that’s a shallow breath that only fills the top of your lungs. So keep on doing it how you’re doing it!

I've heard some people say that your supposed to breath through your nose then out mouth when doing voiceover. Is that right??

Great question! The main thing is to try and breathe normally. What you describe is generally the preferred method since it’s quieter and encourages deeper breaths but sometimes you might need to cheat a catch-breath through your mouth and that’s ok!

Yea i heard the same too, ppl say throat dries up when inhaling through mouth.. but yes like the guy said, I've seen even pros doing the cheat catch breath

What to do when you're on autopilot breathing? After these exercises.. are we always supposed to breathe through nose and exhale through mouth?

In theory but to be perfectly honest it doesn’t always work out that way in practice. If you pay attention to how you breathe when speaking normally you probably inhale through your nose during longer pauses but if you’re forced to talk a lot at one time, catch breaths through your mouth are unavoidable. Sometimes you need to get a lot of air in quickly. The key is to try and be intentional when you breathe and if you need to take a catch breath through your mouth, angle your head away from the mic or try to be as quiet as you can.

@@killervoicestudios3973 oh alright! Got it, thanks a lot. What i also meant was, are we always using diaphragm breathing when not intentionally trying that? Cuz we don't always have our bellies popping out and going in?

I needed this because I had my lower left lobe removed. I was looking ways to rebuild my lungs to their capacity. I'm super excited to start doing this daily.
