hey man, your channel has been incredibly helpful in looking at and understanding parts! Question tho!
Do you have a method you used for learning by ear, or do you learn in a different method. It takes time and understanding the instrument but curious if you got any tips?

Hey, thanks so much for watching. My methods for learning a song are anything and everything until I feel as though I can do the song justice. Watch other people play it online, watch videos of that band performing live, check the tabs, check the other tabs, use your own ears or ask a friend who also plays for help. Whatever gets the job done.

HP Productions haha I can only imagine I played les Pauls for a long time as well and those thunderbirds. Till I developed back problems from jumping and stuff. I ended up one day messing around on a prs 245 and loved it and the singlecut it's not as heavy as gibson but they play just as good if not better!

Hey man awesome content, just a question from a new guitar player.
I like music ranging from metal to punk and everything in between, what pedals would you recommend ? I like Alkaline and Angels and Airwaves so a delay pedal seems to be a must but what about distortion ?
My AMP has distortion and delay but they can't be customized so I think I'm in need of a pedal or two.. what would you say are two good ones to start with than compliment metal/punk ?
    Thanks man

Hey, thanks! I use the MXR Carbon Copy analog delay and would recommend it. For distortion I use the Boss DF-2 Turbo Distortion and a EHX Little Big Muff fuzz pedal. Both are fairly/reasonably priced. Honestly though, I would just do some research on your own and watch pedal demos on UA-cam and pick your favorite that way. Watching a good pedal demo video goes a long way in making a decision.

Boss Digital Delay is also a great pedal

I know I'm a bit late for the party but just a few things to consider regarding distortion pedals. What pedal you choose is very much going to depend on what you're using for amplification as they're all very different in the way they react to the incoming signal. Some amps (I've found this to be more prevalent on tube amps, your mileage may vary) don't need additional distortion as such, all you need is a boost pedal which in turn will drive the pre-amp harder. Some use boost pedals, but what also works really well are EQ pedals using the volume or gain slider (a few bucks more than a boost pedal but you have the added benefit of a 10-band graphic EQ).
One of the most insane shredded metal sounds I ever heard was my neighbor in Cali a long time ago using an ancient Fender Twin, clean channel, driven by a Boss Digital Metalizer MZ-2 (not that newer POS Boss MT-2). It had blistering gain and some serious balls.
Or maybe you're not using a traditional amp that doesn't have a conventional pre-amp section. I got rid of my amps years ago and have been using software solutions which I'm surprisingly happy with. Amplitube 4 has some really nice sounding amps and what not. I found this other suite a couple of months ago that I've been using almost exclusively called Scuffham S-Gear. For hi-gain lead stuff I boost one of my distorted patches with a Proco Rat and it just works really well. Though other amps in the suite don't work at all with external distortion.
I guess what I'm trying to say with this little ramble is go and try stuff out. If your local music shop has the amp you're using, go there and try as many pedals as you can until you find one that works with your setup cuz some pedals into some amps just sound like a box full of marbles. Its like the distortion algorithm just doesn't overlay nicely with what's in the hardware (if you take my meaning).
For delay the memory man stuff is really good, the carbon copy HP mentioned is nice as are the delay pedals by boss, I'm using a tc electronics alter ego x4 at present and occasionally a jomox t-resonator II which is a trippy beast of delay unit. It's different from most delay units in the way you can cross feedback the delayed signal from the left to the right channel and vice versa which can do some really raunchy shit together with the on board filter section.
      Anyballs, just my $1.04 :-)

@@randumbloser Well ... 2 years later and what can I say. I went from fumbling around A and D chords to being able to play most Alkaline Trio songs now. What a journey. Patience and practice. The breakthrough of playing your first favourite songs all the way through gives you that motivation to keep persisting through and makes it all worth it. I still come back to your videos just to refresh myself on how to play them. After various guitars and amps I've finally landed on a combo that's extremely well rounded which is a Line 6 POD GO and an FR FR powered speaker. I can sort of have the best of every amp at my fingertips.

Ash Cosmo this is the best comment I’ve ever received. So hyped for you knowing the joy that can come from practice and patience. Never stop. Music is a life long journey.
