A critique: While the program is written as a historical account of the Communist Party of China, reflecting the sense of identity of it's members, the program is also directed to a foreign audience as a means of soft power. As a Westener I can tell a number of points that will not resonate with a Western audience while historical events that could, aren't mentioned. First of, neither communism nor socialism are popular in the West while nationalism is on the rise - and in a wider sense the topic of 'decolonization' has become more acceptable to citizens of former colonial powers due to recent mass immigration from former colonies. One could argue that the video is directed towards socialist movements in the West, but these are marginal, fragmented by struggles for 'orthodoxy' and unfit for political rule. Communism isn't unpopular in the West due to it's inherent political supression of 'reactionary forces', but due to it's inherent economic mismanagement and oligarchic corruption. What is called 'the social question', however - social conflicts that rose from the transition of agrarian states into industrialization - is a popular topic, especially since the fraudulent financial crash of 2008 - despite continued resentment against state ownership or any forms of collectivization. Taken these conditions into account, the history of the CPC could have mentioned the _national consensus_ in China after the Versailles Treaty against Western liberal rhetorics that promised 'self-determination', but handed German colonies to the Japanese - the birth of the *May Fourth Movement* , predating the CPC but arguably inspiring it's formation. Emphasizing the motive of national independence and territorial integrity is immedeately accessible in Western and Eastern European audiences, bypassing reservations about Marxist ideology. Framing the competition between the Guomindang - supported by the West via the Song family towards 'Westernization' - and the CPC, following Soviet advice - not as an ideological struggle for 'orthodox' political theory, but about *competence and discipline towards the national rejuvenation, designed by Sun-Yat Sen* will be less polarizing to Western audiences. In the same moment *the role of Russian Revolution of 1917 shouldn't be excluded, but emphasized* as Russia had been isolated and driven into civil war by the intervention of Western powers (Germany, France, Britain and the US operating troops on Russian soil) after it was dragged into the war. Cadres of the KMT and the CPC, both were educated in the emerging Soviet Union about *imperialism* and graduated from the Chinese military academy of Whampoa and if the KMT would have honoured this 'brotherhood in arms' of the *Northern Campaign* against the warlords, armed by the West, the Chinese Civil War would have been avoided and Japan could have been deterred from an invasion, possibly leading to a two party system. One the KMT comitted their betrayal, supported by German and American advisors, *one should point out that it was not 'orthodox' Marxism that helped the CPC survive the purge, but Mao's observation of peasant uprisings* , the historical origin and inspirational of the CPC's popularity to this day. *While Soviet advisors died alongside the still rare urban workers in the coastal cities, Mao Zedong Thought survived the 'Long March' and layed the foundation for Deng Xiaoping Theory and 'Socialism with Chinese Characteristics'* . This is a crucial difference to the Western image of 'Communist China', _widespread among the Western political Right_ - while the *similarities to the American Revolution* are completely ignored. This cannot stand - and the CPC should take note of this _grave_ misunderstanding of Chinese history ! During WW II one could point out the American support - and high regard - by Chinese speaking American advisors for the CPC competency to administrate Yan'an in a popular fashion and to resist Japanese occupation ( *'Dixie Mission'* ) - just as one could mention, how the KMT failed to end the civil war and lost it, despite it's numerical, territorial and material advantages by sheer corruption, funneling US financial support directly to Taiwan. After the war, the *mistakes of Stalinist collectivization and industrialization - the 'Great Leap' - shouldn't be ignored* , but explained as foreign concepts that were ill-adapted to Chinese conditions, leading to the economic reforms of Deng Xiaoping that drive China's success, today ! Finally, pointing out, the role of the CPC in the economic development of South East Asia would be an important topic, legitimizing Chinese influence beyond it's territorial restoration. These are the things missing, I can instantly see from the top of my head when watching the animation - hopefully, CPC members can imagine these _impressions_ and adapt China's 'soft power', accordingly for the struggles ahead.
