I always wondered, if someone put Cat Skin on a Sanshin, wouldn't that technically make it some kind of Mini-Tsugaru Shamisen?
More snakes were available on Okinawa than cats at the time. Plus the Okinawa Cats are kinda sacred.
shamisen were originally made of cat and dogs skin until about the early 2000's.because people complained of poor cat and dogs so they stopped and started using snake skin imported from other country.
it is easier to string than a guitar...maybe a similiar mechanism for guitars would be useful
