It makes me think he also probably treated his wife the very same way. I’m not justifying anything he did and I’m not condoning it either. But we also need to remember this happened in the late 70’s. Back then it was just starting to change that it wasn’t condoned any longer to beat your wife if she didn’t do what her husband wanted her to do. Unless he beat her to the point of broken bones or a visible bruise or a fat lip or knocked out teeth. That was usually the only time a man was told to leave his wife alone. It was also the same thing with beating your kid. You could spank them just short of broken bones, leaving bruises, a fat lip, or knocking out teeth. A man was permitted to beat his wife and children if he felt like it. And a woman could beat her children without recourse unless she went to far. Then in the mid 80’s it started becoming a issue. And men started being made accountable. But until around sometime in the late eighties a woman couldn’t even get a credit card without getting her husband or Father’s permission to. And then he needed to make sure she understood the responsibility a having a credit card. So if she got divorced then she would have to wait until she could prove she could afford it. Or if her husband was a little bit decent and he agreed to sign for her. So to being a woman married to a abusive man she was SOL the police weren’t interested in protecting and serving the woman.

@Idontwant1 Exactly. And, very well-stated. People don't realize what it was like back in those days. We tend to look back and romantisize the past. Don't get me wrong, there were some good times! But, the other side of the coin was harsh...and dark.

She (Streep) has also said that Hoffman provoked her about the death of her fiance (Godfather actor John Cazale- thanks @CritiqueofEverything) to "get a reaction out of her". She had nursed that poor man for years while he battled cancer and losing him devastated her. It's clear that Hoffman's done a lot of shady stuff that he should have been held accountable for. What terrible things to do to ANYONE.

Agreed!!! I remember it was either during the making of or right before the release of Tootsie Dustin Hoffman left his first wife and little kids for the nanny. He got pregnant. So he dumped his first family to start a new one. And he has had other allegations of being a prick pretty much his whole career. And during Me To he had allegations of being a perv to makeup and hair artist and costume designers and his leading ladies. He’s a little man who had success and it went to his big head and he thought he was the best thing ever.

Lol right!!! I can’t imagine what a nightmare that is to deal with as a fellow actor on set with him. Like Jim Carry in Man In The Moon (the Andy Koffman bio pic) Jim was in character the whole time. The first day he walked on set as Andy. And he insisted as meeting cast and crew as Andy. And when Jim was needed on set he refused to acknowledge or respond unless you spoke to him as Andy and called him Andy. If you called him Jim he would completely ignore you until you correctly called him Andy. I guess I kinda understand transforming yourself into the character. But running a marathon daily to play a runner or refusing to answer to anything but the characters name is wacko. And it really makes me wonder how much of a pain in the butt they are in real life.

Danny was a better actor, and he was a kid. Jack Nicholson needed a much stronger better actress as his cast mate. What I remember about Shell Duvall is her greasy stringy hair, and her frumpy clothes.(don't forget the over sized boots) The scene where she was swinging at him with a bat or maybe a broom (I can't remember which) as he is following her up the stairs, the director had to do something to get her to act somewhat afraid. Stephen King was quoted as saying he was not pleased or happy with the film version of his book. I have to agree. Maybe if Ms Duvall was omitted, it would have been a better movie, and she wouldn't have been traumatized so bad. IMO!!

It changed the way I thought of Dustin and I think what he did was absolutely deplorable not just him slapping her as if that wasn't enough but the fact he thought his status somehow above Meryl and therefor his inferior. No. YOU don't get what she's saying. She is well-known for disliking Dustin Hoffman, because of the way he treated her while filming this movie. And she ends the story saying that today he would be "sued" for such behavior. There is no admiration in this story.

Heard about this years ago, and as a former victim of abuse, can not tolerate Dustin Huffman.

I don’t even think the slap was a bad idea. I think a conversation at the beginning of working together regarding doing things like this randomly throughout the working process to get eachother into the right mind frame would have been more appropriate. So yes it worked, but him thinking she actually needed it or wanted it is presumptuous and patronising. She’s a professional, if she wants or needs help let her ask for it or at least have a conversation about it.

@86sineadw. Dustin Hoffman was not in charge of getting Meryl Streep in the right mood to do any scene. What he did is plain and simply assault.

@@libbyworkman3459It'd be interesting to hear Dustin's recollections of shooting this film. I imagine he'd been immersed in gritty realism making Midnight Cowboy. Maybe he and Meryl rehearsed this scene, and Dustin unilaterally decided it lacked truthful human emotion - rage, disgust etc. He may have wanted a less 'clean', self-controlled performance from Meryl??

That film made me cry. We saw it right after my parents split. We were a product of divorce. It came out right after our parents split. What a fun king fantastic movie. No matter what you wanna say about what Dustin did that movie was magic
