I don't know why there are so many hate comments. It's actually not bad for a cheap keyboard, at least it has a half decent piano unlike the MK2000 or Acoustic Solutions MK2054 those are far worse. Everyone has to start somewhere.
A great review. I was considering this keyboard but when you demonstrated that there is some latency when playing multiple notes simultaneously that was a deal breaker for me. I wouldn't expect anything amazing for a budget keyboard but I'm sure even cheaper keyboards can play 5 or more notes at the same time. By the way, I think you could do a great Chandler impression lol
An old Yamaha is superior because of that ridiculous delay in chords. This was the video I needed to ensure I didn't get this as a family Christmas present this year. Pitch bend is fun, but no, I need to be able to play chords if I want to teach my daughter.
Great review, I think this is the best review of this particular keyboard that I've seen so far. I wouldn't get this keyboard even as a beginner but that's only because I can afford a much better keyboard for myself despite being a complete beginner. Otherwise for a hundred bucks this keyboard delivers what should be expected from a keyboard of that price. I would add a few more bucks and go for something offered by world renowned brands such as CASIO or YAMAHA. They make some pretty neat arranger keyboards for beginners such as the CT-X800 by CASIO or the PSR-463 by YAMAHA - they will cost a bit more than this keyboard but are substantially better in every regard, even though they don't come with some accessories that this one does - its still a no-brainer for me to go for CASIO/YAMAHA.
I recently bought a Roland FP-30X to practice with at home. I just ordered a Rock Jam 49-key portable solely for the purpose of playing chord progressions at the vocal class at the senior center or at home when I don't want to sit at the keyboard. I suppose with headphones I could even use it for practicing in public places. My piano level back in the day was intermediate beginner. My guitar level was perhaps a little more advanced. That was decades ago, but I started out this time around playing the Hanon exercises immediately, something a rank beginner cannot do. My thought is, you just cannot expect much out of an instrument in this price range. No matter what you buy, there is going to be something wrong be it the speakers, the action or the sound. If you are a beginner, get something better than this to start on. If you had some past instruction and development and you just want to get your hands in shape, or you have some specific purpose in mind as I do, the price is right. In fact, the 49-key version is borderline free. Myself, after buying in at the top of the entry level price range to get good acoustic piano emulation, I am not going to buy a portable keyboard in the several-hundred-dollar price range when even a more expensive inbstrument will still not have a good acoustic piano-like action. I played scales, chords and exercises on a number of types of keyboards. No keyboard without all of the acoustic piano features felt normal to me. The Roland FP-30X and Yamaha P-125 or P-225 are available for about $700. The Alesis Prestige Artist can be had for $500. These are prices you can get if you shop around. If you are buying for a child, get something decent. It should at least have weighted keys and a velocity action. Velocity action means, the harder you whack the keys, the louder the note is. I can't make a recommendation except about the top of the entry level, but there are numerous reviews here on UA-cam covering every price point. The only price point I know about is the top of the entry level, which is around $700.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences! I definitely agree with the sentiment that it is best to spend a bit more money when possible to achieve an instrument with a more rewarding and inspiring musical experience. While instruments like the RockJam RJ561 have their purpose in certain applications, they are far from ideal or suitable for proper piano study.
@@MerriamPianos I cancelled the Rock Jam order before it was shipped. The 49-key size was right, but the performance, I realized, would be disappointing even considering the price. The lack of information in the product descriptions is appalling too. Specifically, they never detail the type of key action or what the size of the keys is either. Or the polyphony. Unfortunately, the solution always seem to be, go to the top of your price tier. I my case, though, I also do not want or need an overly large instrument just to take to group vocal class and play a few chords. I have a Roland FP-30X at home.

I don't know if I completely understand the question. The microphone wouldn't enhance the sound of the instrument or speakers. Plugging in the microphone will simply allow to sing or talk through the onboard speakers of the piano.
@@MerriamPianos Yes. I don't hear the voice coming through the speakers when I use the mic? I guess we were trying to amplify the voice(make the vocals louder) while using the plugged in mic via the piano speakers if that makes sense.
Bought this as a beginner piano today and already want to get rid of it. How am I supposed to get good at playing with constant delays on the keys. Would not recommend
I'm sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with the RJ561. While it can serve as a decent introduction to music, it is not a suitable instrument to study serious piano playing on. Thank you for tuning in and sharing your insights!
I bought one of these several years ago. Regret. It came broken and I didn’t understand the concept of returns. I’m a more advanced pianist now due to playing on Yamahas at school, so I’m going to be buying a Privia soon. I’m just ready for a major change. This was okay at the very beginning, but I outgrew it quite quickly

This keyboard is certainly suitable as an introduction to music and the piano, but the inauthentic feel of the action can be detrimental to a student's technique development as many teachers will attest to. A fully-weighted touch is usually the preference. However, at the end of the day, the best instrument is the one that inspires the player musically! :)
Guitar tones (and any plucked string instrument) are definitely tough to replicate authentically via both sampling and synthesis. The little nuances and sounds that you hear between note transitions, such as string noise that occurs when sliding your fingers across the winds of the strings, have a lot to do with how with perceive the sound. Therefore, when those details are not present, it does not always sound totally authentic.
From my understanding the RJ561 is not touch sensitive. I would have to clarify with Stu on that front though as I have not personally played the RJ561.
@@MerriamPianos ok, actually a student of mine bought it and on the stores it says it is touch sensitive but i wanna know if there's any button to make it touch sensitive.
Hi Rebeca! Brent from Merriam Music here! While I have seen some sites advertise that the RJ561's keys are touch sensitive, that is not the case fro my recollection. The action is neither weighted nor touch-sensitive. Thanks and hope this helps! :)
I'm sorry to hear that you experienced issues with the RockJam RJ561. I hope the dealer/store you purchased from was able to work out some sort of an exchange for you.

I don't automatically assume anything negative about you. Maybe your parents don't understand pianos or maybe their budget does not allow for a more expensive one. You can always buy yourself a better one by earning your own money. Depending on your age, right now many stores are hiring. If you are too young for that, you can mow lawns or make money helping younger children with their homework. If you have good skills in an area, you can tutor kids.
We do our best to represent the piano tones from the instruments we review as transparently as possible. We aren't doing any post production work to try to improve the sound. Thanks for tuning in! :)
people need to be warned. These "super-kits" with stand, and carrying bag, seem to sell pretty well on Amazon. But even a 30 year old used Roland has more to offer in dynamics (touch sensitive keys) tones and polyphony. And is cheaper too and far more durable

Any feed back would be much appreciated thanks very much!
What about a beginning 7 year old?
Yamaha is always going to be my favorite keyboard I agree
Hello,
How can i get the manual for this keyboard?
You can find the manual for this keyboard here:
www.manualslib.com/manual/1502843/Rock-Jam-Rj-561.html
Thx for this. Very helpful.
You're very welcome! Thank you for tuning in! :)
I connected a mic to the outlet at the back but the mic does'nt seem to be enhancing the sound(should I be doing something else too)??
Thank You sooooo helpful
You're very welcome! Thanks for tuning in! :)
Very great review. Thank you.
Thanks so much! We appreciate it! :)
How do the included headphones sound like
sound?
@@MrKeys57 for someone named ‘mr keys’ i would expect someone with higher sound standards

Just bought a $300 88 key weighted piano and I’m just going back to my first keyboard for Nostalgia
I am taking piano lessons and I want to get a keyboard to practice on at home, would you have any tips like I cant afford to spend a fortune on a keyboard
@@pearlkelly6337 I’d say go for a CASIO keyboard if you can, or a very small Yamaha that’s used
@@TOASTERBOI_2004 May even find one at a car boot sale or a charity shop which is a thrift store to you
@@pearlkelly6337 Most definitely, whatever works works :) unless you're a professional pft...
@@TOASTERBOI_2004 I think I'll get the casio one it looks alright, I don't want anything too bulky or anything though cos I'll just be using it in bed cos I'm disabled so I'm in bed most of the time, I'm gonna ask my dad for it for Christmas but ask him can I have it early
Wow!!! Thanks for this video
Thank you! 👍😁
Can I use the microphone on this?
I just bought one and it doesn’t work:(
Thanks 🎉
You're very welcome! :)
Not sure why many are crapping on this piano. It's great for a 10 year old
This keyboard is certainly suitable as an introduction to music and the piano, but the inauthentic feel of the action can be detrimental to a student's technique development as many teachers will attest to. A fully-weighted touch is usually the preference. However, at the end of the day, the best instrument is the one that inspires the player musically! :)
I'm excited 😊
How do you put in the batteries?
There is a battery compartment underneath the keyboard. :)
@@MerriamPianos Thank you so much!
Does anyone know how to make sustain longer for this keyboard plzzz
But is the feel of the keyboard any good?
Not really it’s very obvious that it’s just a hunk of plastic with maybe a spring
@@campflow yea use to have this piano 😬
I really wouldn’t bother with this keyboard. Very cheap keys and the tones sound terrible. Just go for a weighted hammer action digital piano instead
@@campflow lol
thank you
How do you put it in 3/4 time?
press the Waltz button in Styles
I got a new piano from best choices products with headset and microphone.
That's awesome! Congratulations on your new piano! :)
Sir you have got screen display
Am I missing something or non of the guitar tunes are even decent at all or can anyone explain if I’m missing something
Is this keyboard touch sensitive?
From my understanding the RJ561 is not touch sensitive. I would have to clarify with Stu on that front though as I have not personally played the RJ561.
@@MerriamPianos ok, actually a student of mine bought it and on the stores it says it is touch sensitive but i wanna know if there's any button to make it touch sensitive.
It would have been better as an FM keyboard
It's touch sensitive?
Hi Rebeca! Brent from Merriam Music here! While I have seen some sites advertise that the RJ561's keys are touch sensitive, that is not the case fro my recollection. The action is neither weighted nor touch-sensitive. Thanks and hope this helps! :)
@@MerriamPianos thanks! I was decided to buy this, but if is not touch sensitive, it's a no for me.
Only thing better than piano is tulips on the organ.
There was a rj361
Would anyone here say its worth 100$ cndn?....have a chance to purchase to get my son into piano
i have the same one that i bought on amazon in cda. and wouldn't part with it. i have learned how to play it and really enjoy it
Your chords are too complex for the organ. I take it that there is no sustain pedal.
Got one of these and all at once no sound
I'm sorry to hear that you experienced issues with the RockJam RJ561. I hope the dealer/store you purchased from was able to work out some sort of an exchange for you.
i just have one
Very nice! They are fun keyboards! :)
It would be nice if you could actually SEE what you are talking about as you are touching and or pointing at different keyboard functions... I couldn't retain anything you were explaining because I don't know what you were pressing.. ugh
I am sorry that you had a tough time following the video. We appreciate you taking the time to check it out and for sending in your feedback. I will certainly pass along the suggestions to our production team. Thanks again and all the best! :)

Polyphony of 8? LOL.
Inovus i88 see what you think.
I bought a Rock Jam 561 & the piano sound sucks. My BigFun 61 Keyboard sounds better . Oh well,I only spent about $35 on it on eBay.
The RJ561 does not offer the most authentic or rewarding piano sound. But, as you mentioned, that is partially to be expected given its price point.
@@MerriamPianos True; I'm a beginner ( obviously or I would've bought something better) Btw,u play really well & even made that keyboard sound half-way decent! 👍 P.S. It's actually a RJ 361; I thought I was getting the RJ 561 .Gotta pay more attn to the serial numbers for these..!🙄
looks like Casio from 80's ,40 years behind, the cheapest Casio is way better than that rubbish.
It’s the most horrible keyboard I have touched! It sucks so bad and I’m really dissatisfied and disappointed because my parents got me this for my birthday and there’s no way I can straight away ask for a new one. But I’m also really upset because I wanted to practice and progress to a confident pianist but I really don’t know what I’m going to do now.
Same my parents just bought me this and I really want a proper one rather than it but I only got it yesterday and its gonna be hard to tell them I dont like it :(
sounds like brats that want their first car to be a mercedes. learn to play first, then you can ask for a better keyboard.
@@usuarioanonimo85 ye actually your right I sulked abt it to my mum and she told me the same thing you said it does make more sense but no I don’t like Mercedes and neither am I a brat
Bad
From my personal experience, this piano sounds terrible. The tones don’t sound as good in real life as they do in this video
We do our best to represent the piano tones from the instruments we review as transparently as possible. We aren't doing any post production work to try to improve the sound. Thanks for tuning in! :)
Just throw that shit........Sounds horrible looks horrible.
Its not for you to make video on junk like that.
There is no problem yall trippin it helps people like me who are interested in trying this out
people need to be warned. These "super-kits" with stand, and carrying bag, seem to sell pretty well on Amazon. But even a 30 year old used Roland has more to offer in dynamics (touch sensitive keys) tones and polyphony. And is cheaper too and far more durable
