Nowadays, it’s harder than ever to keep the children active and off some sort of electronic device. A DIY indoor climbing wall can be an excellent addition to a home to keep the kids active.
First, Let's Talk Safety!
Obviously with any DIY climbing wall for kids, safety needs to be considered. Each parent will have to do their own assessment to see if a home is a good fit for their family.
To mitigate the risk of injury, we choose the maximum height of 6 feet for the wall climbing wall. We found a good set of tumbler mats to keep under the climbing wall. The wall has been up for almost 6 months now and we are happy to say there have been zero injuries.
If you feel having a climbing wall for kids in your home is too dangerous, don’t build one.
How to Build a Climbing Wall for Kids?
When we were learning how to build a rock climbing wall we did a ton of research. You should be able to use the following information to get you started.
Step #1 - Prepare and organize the tools and materials you will require to build your indoor climbing wall for home. Here’s what you’ll need:
Painters tape
3 Sheets 4'x8' - 18mm finished plywood (¾” is also common)
#10 x 3” wood screws (for fastening climbing wall to studs)
Primer (find one for bare wood)
Paint (we prefer eggshell finish)
M10 - T-Nuts were included with the climbing holds (⅜” is the other common option)
M10 bolts - should supplied with your climbing holds (length will depend on thickness of plywood and hold insert depth) cut them so they do not protrude past the plywood
Self-adhesive screw hole stickers
Dupli-Color Promoter Primer
2" Gymnastic Mats x2
⅛” drill bit for #10 pilot hole
7/16” countersink for wood screws
7/16 Drill Bit (T-nuts)
Personal Protective Equipment (safety glasses, dust mask, gloves, ear plugs, knee pads)
Stud Finder
Circular saw and/or jigsaw
Tape Measure
2 foot & 4 foot. level (can also be used as your straight edge)
Hammer (for installing t-nuts flush)
Palm Sander / 220 grit sandpaper
Power or Impact Drill
Step #2 - Locate the wall studs using a stud finder. Then confirm spacing of the studs using your tape measure.
Step #3 - Come up with a design for your plywood cutouts. We used painters tape and it worked great to visualize the layout. You could also use Google Sketchup which is a handy tool for projects like this.
Step #4 - Transfer the climbing wall shapes to the plywood. We made sketches of each shape using paper then transferred those dimensions to the plywood. This can be time consuming depending on your shapes as you want to have as little waste as possible.
Step #5 - Cut out climbing wall shapes. A circular saw and a jigsaw worked great.
Step #6 - Sand the edges and any rough spots.
Step #7 - layout your plywood cutouts on the ground replicating how they will be on the wall. Place the climbing wall holds for kids to your preferred layout and mark the holes to be drilled. I recommend taking a photo when you have all the climbing holds in place to reference when installing them.
Step #8 - Drill out holes for t-nuts
Step #9 - Install the T-nuts flush on the back side of the plywood using a hammer. Test each t-nut by screwing a bolt to ensure there are no issues with the threads.
Step #10 - Prime and Paint the playroom climbing wall shapes. We used 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of paint - Eggshell paint is the best for cleaning and will reduce visible fingerprints .
Step #11 - Using the marks you made earlier when locating the studs, draw faint lines with a pencil the full length of the wall. These will help to make sure you hit a stud when hanging the pieces of the climbing wall.
Step #12 - Secure each piece of the wall using wood screws. Always pre-drill pilot holes so you don’t split the wood or the studs.
Step #13 - Install the holds using bolts. Make sure the length of the screws does not exceed the thickness of the plywood. You may need to cut them down using a grinder with zip disc, or purchase the correct size screws for your application. Use hand tools when attaching the climbing holds to prevent cross threading
Step #14 - Prime and paint the screw hole stickers. I used a primer spray for plastic - 2 coats. Then rolled 3 coats of the same paint we used for the climbing wall shapes. This was an afterthought and actually turned out great.
Step #15 - Safety Mats - The set shown in the video is 2” thick and works great for absorbing the impact when the kids jump off the wall.
We hope this helped you if you were trying to learn how to make a climbing wall. A DIY climbing wall for toddlers is super fun. If you have any questions leave them in the comments.
Neat-O! New sub here.
Welcome Eatin' Good!
This is freaking awesome! Your kids are going to have such great memories of all the awesome stuff their dad made for them!
Thank you Natasha!
I feel ashamed of being a Dad after watching your video. True inspiration man
Thanks Kodawaiki! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Perfect for when your floor is Lava. Looks great!

Great job dad! -@DadSews
Thanks @dadsews!
Dad of the year!
Just doing my part. Any thing for these little munchkins :D
This is amazing. Thanks for sharing. If I had the SPACE for this I would totally do it. Maybe out back?
Thanks for the kind words Jcliffy! Was definitely a good addition for the boys. If you can make it happen I'm sure the little ones will love it wherever it is.
You are my second favourite Dad. Great effort
Thanks!
Really awesome build!
Thanks Design Craft Workshop!
Hi everyone! Thanks for watching our DIY Indoor Climbing Wall Video. Next time we would probably add some extra t-nuts to give more options for holds in the future. Is there anything you would do different or add to this climbing wall to make it better? Let us know in the comments below!
Great idea about the extra t-nuts. It should help the kid(s) get re-excited about the wall every time you change the course.
Hey OP.
Really nice job, from concept to execution. But did you know that climbing "grips" arencolor coded to denote difficulty, and therefore should be laid out as such in particular "routes".
Again, nice work.
PS. Maybe install a terminal band with climbing point at ceiling height... and crash pads on the ground, no matter what you do
Thanks George! Appreciate the feedback.
I see we share a common style of video lol Very fun idea and awesome job. Love the idea for your channel DIY for kids and family. very cool! New Sub here keep at it!
Thanks Steve! You bet, great style haha. Looking forward to watching more of your videos as well. Gotcha back..
Cool project and love the extra effort put into making the video. You could add extra screws so you can rearrange the holds every now and then to mix it up.
Thanks @someonemagical! Ya I totally would add extra t-nuts next time. Shouldn't be too hard for me to do in the future. When the boys get a bit older ill probably put smaller holds on as well.
So cool!
Glad you enjoyed the video! 😀
Looks Amazing! Will definitely give it a try
Thank you! The little ones will love it :)
Excellent job! Your boy will have the hand strength of a god in two years. Great video!
Thank you for the comment! Hahaha. He's already stronger than me!
Wow! This is amazing!

@@ParentsandProjects Really cool. Rae is going to want me to do this now :)
Great job, love seeing the step by step process!
Thanks LiveInnerCity, appreciate the feedback!
Super cool. My grandkids would love that. Maybe get them off of their phones for a little bit. Subscribed!
Thanks for the support! Looking forward to seeing your climbing wall video 😉
@@ParentsandProjects Thanks but my smallish house wouldn't have much of a climbing wall but hopefully I can finally get some time and the will to get some more videos going.
Did you have any issues with the hold bolts hitting the drywall on the back side? I’ve heard people say you need “negative space” back there.
Hey Jim, great question. I actually cut each bolt down with a grinder and zip disk because the supplied bolts would have protruded past the plywood into the drywall. Unfortunately, my recording didn't work for that part so it wasn't included in the video. The smaller holds were a pain because the bolts needed to be cut to different lengths.
Tip for this part, if you are going to cut with a zip disk, make sure you have a nut threaded on before you cut, then back it off after the cut is made. This will keep the thread in good shape for the install.
Hope this helps.
Brad
Oh wow, that's amazing! Your kids sure are lucky 👏😁💪
Thank you! It's all about the kids!
Wow awesome! I wish I was that handy 🤣🤣
You got this! Thanks for watching!
Great video! What do you use to cut the nut bolt to make it flush against the plywood? Thanks!
Hey Tuan, I used a grinder with a zip cut disk. Was a bit time consuming but cheaper then purchasing the proper length bolts. If you use thus technique make sure you have a nut threaded onto the bolt before you cut. If you don't do this you could experience cross threading when mounting the climbing holds.
Awesome 👌
Thanks 🤗
Wooooow.... Really nice... 👌👌👌👌👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍.... How many hours did it take you to build this?
Thanks for watching Kami Art! Total build time took about 25 hours, so about 3 full days for me. Someone else could probably do it faster.
@@ParentsandProjects that was really cool.... I will try to do it for my Child. 👍
Awesome indoor climbing wall. Lucky boys!
Thank you 🤗
Hello, any issues drilling directly to studs without adding subwall behind climbing panels? Everything I’ve read thus far has mentioned this and your way seems so much easier and looks better.
Hey! No issue with fastening directly to a stud.. my only concern would be making sure you are in the center of the stud, but can be done.. the other down side of fastening to studs is you are limited to the layout.. but, you will save a few bucks for sure. Hope this helps, have an awesome day.
Fantastic presentation with super thought and wonderful spiritual amazing awesome and magical content for all of us 🙏❤🙏🙋♂🇮🇳💯
Thank you for watching Suraj. Glad you enjoyed!
Great Video, thank you for sharing. A couple of questions, where did you buy the holds from? Was the 18mm plywood thick enough to secure each hold and handle the weight?
Hey! Sorry for the delayed response. We purchased all the holds through Amazon. All the links are found in the video description. Regarding the plywood thickness, 18mm was perfect. No issues at all with handling the weight of my oldest who is 50 lbs. I am sure it will last him for many more years.
🙏✝⛪ God bless you with health and peace thank you for sharing your videos 🙏
Thank you!
How has the paint held up? Have you tried removing the holds and relocating them for variety? Does the paint pull off and get damaged when taking off holds and when the kids climb on the walls?
Hey @thwrightstuff. Good question. The paint has held up very well, but there are some spots it chipped away from the primer. I'm pretty sure it was too cold in my garage when I painted tgese and I didn't get a good bond between the paint and primer. I haven't tried to remove or switch any holds, but that is a good idea.. let me check when I have some time here, and I'll get back to you in the next couple of days.
Amazing my dear Friend - Well done !! Have a wonderful time ! Greetings.
Thank you! You too!
Great work! One question and I may have missed this in the video, did you use hardwood plywood, or do you think you can get by with just sanded? TIA!
Hey Michael, thanks for watching our video!
We just used 18mm sanded and it was fine. I'm sure you could use either though.
Nice build! My daughters would love this
Edit: for the question up top. I don’t have any suggestions for the build itself, beautifully done and well presented. My only suggestion would be to also relay the instructions in a spoken format so the viewers can get to know you! Well done
Thanks guyz! Appreciate the comment and the feedback. Probably not a bad idea at all to re-edit the video with some voice over. could use the extra content on the channel as well. Thanks for watching!
This was so incredible to watch on so many levels. The build itself looks fantastic. The kids are bound to love it AND it encourages an active lifestyle for the children! A definite mommy and daddy of the month award for this! keep the content coming!
Thank you so much Poor Man's DIY!
Things such an epic build, my girls would love it!
Thanks man! I've seen your work, this would be an easy build for ya 😁
nice playroom
Thank you!
Well there you go, That was pretty spectacular to watch 😃 Awesome set up my man, I could see me having some fun on that 😊
Thanks! it's a blast!
Any extra steps to support adult’s weight? Your kids are stoked!
Thanks for watching and yes, my boys have been enjoying this climbing wall.
As for extra steps, I would just say make sure you are supported well to your studs. Also, make sure the hold bolts get full thread engagement. If you were to only turn in a couple threads they could be pulled out and fail. If I think of anything else I'll get back to you. Good luck!
Amazing climbing wall! So awesome!
Thank you 🤗
really cool
Thank you so much!
I want 😍😍😍😍😍
Thanks for watching Brent!
Wow, que legal!
Thank you!
i want make my son is growing and cant time .....56 pieces is good
Hey Canal. You should definitely build a climbing wall for your son. It's easy and if you have any questions let me know. The climbing wall holds we used can be found here - www.amazon.com/shop/parentsandprojects
56 piece was perfect for us as we mixed the 32 piece and 25 piece set.
Awesome. Plz make more videos like dis
Thanks! Working on them 😃. Stay tuned!
How long did it this project take you?
Hey Ja'Maia, total build time was about 25 hours. I did it in 3 days and the hands were hurting lol..
Thanks for the question, I should have included this in the video..
Oh wow thanks for the quick response. My husband and I are planning to build our boys a wall, we thought your video was very informative!
@@jMaiaE - Glad you enjoyed it. Of you have any other questions feel free to ask. One other thing I didn't mention I the video is cutting the bolts. The supplied bolts were too long and would have protrude into the drywall. So I had to cut them down. I think I may have mentioned it in the description. Good luck on the build. The kids will love it!
I plan to install wall climbing for my boys as well, could anyone please tell me is it safe just to place the climbing stones directly to my concrete wall without using the playwood?
Hi Hamizah! Awesome that you are planning to build a climbing wall for your boys. I can comfortably tell you if mounting the climbing holds direct to a concrete wall will be safe. I am thinking if you research the proper size and length concrete screw that will support the required weight, you should be ok. The only reason I use plywood was to allow me to have the holds placed in various locations other than just stud locations. The walls in this video are drywall so the climbing holds could not be secured safely to just this.
Let me know if you have any more questions. Good luck and have fun!
@@ParentsandProjects thank you so much! Really appreciate that. Yeah definitely going to research that. 🙏🏼
Question: when you screw the holds into the plywood, how are your screws not going through the back of the plywood and into the drywall?
Hi Collin, good question. This will depend on the length of your cap screws. One thing I failed to mention in the video is that I purchased shorter cap screws so this wouldn't be an issue. The alternative would be use a grinder and zip disk to cut the originals down if they are two long, or a hack saw.. Time consuming, I know. If you do decide to cut them down, make sure you put a nut on before you cut then back it off to fix the threads.
Hope this helps.
@@ParentsandProjects makes sense thanks! What length cap screws did you use then?
This is awesome! I hope to do this for my kid(s) in a few years God willing. Great way to get to the top bunk!
Thanks! You can do it and your kids will love it! Great name by the way @andrizeefoshizee!
@@ParentsandProjects Thanks!
No all you need is an indoor zip line. Love the colors.
Thanks TBS-DIY! Was a fun project and well worth the blood, sweat and tears. I ran the zip line idea past the wifey and she isn't having it. Might have to wait until she goes on a girls trip and surprise here when she's back.
Do you think this is possible to do on stairway wall?
Hey! I'm sure you could. My only concern would be crash mats. My boys have had a couple falls and if they landed on stairs it may have been a different story.
Let me know if you have any questions. Happy to help..
This is amazing and full of fun for the kids. Very creative.
Thanks! My boys love it. Was worth all the hours and blisters put into it.
Damn that’s awesome.
Thanks @2jzk
This is awesome ❤️ indoor workout for kids👌👌ood job
Thanks for watching! Yup, these boys have some serious grip strength.
Lucky boys! Wish I had a indoor climbing wall like this when I was a kid. Good job!
It's pretty awesome! Thanks for watching!
So good and thanks for the list of items/instructions. Will try to attempt this and let you know how it goes!
Awesome Sam and thanks for the kind words.. This climbing wall is definitely one of my favorite projects. Hoping to find the time to do my projects like these in the future.
Awesome DIY climbing wall! Good job
Thank you! Cheers!
Cool video!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed!
Awesome project. ❤️💯
Thanks!
Awesome job parents !!
Thanks Rosey!
@@ParentsandProjects You are so welcome 🙏 🤗
Very nicely done!
Thank you! Cheers!
how many hours does it take to do this job?
Hey, I don't know the exact hours. But I think it took me about 24 hours total.. I'm sure it could have been don't way faster if I didn't have to come up with a design.. marking up the wood from my drawings took a while.
Brilliant & Beautiful 😍
Thank you DayDreamer!
